Many of the letters were written by Baker's niece, Hazel Beamer Cutler (1901-1980), who provides her with updates on her life in New York City, where she was attending college and performing as a dancer in the 1920s (while she was Hazel Beamer, before she took her married surname of Cutler). In one of the letters, Hazel Beamer mentions meeting Rudolph Valentino, whom she met through portrait painter and stage designer Ben Ali Haggin, III (1882-1951); she also mentions having her portrait painted by Haggin and notes some of the New York theater contacts she has made through him. Another letter from Hazel Beamer describes meeting and auditioning for Oscar Hammerstein II. Expressed throughout the letters are an appreciation for Baker's genealogical work, Baker's work as a school teacher, and discussions of extended family ancestry. A letter from illustrator, portrait artist and muralist Dora Wheeler Keith (1856-1940) remarks on the visit of Sallie's sister and Hazel Beamer's mother Eva Elizabeth "Bessie" Baker Beamer (1864-1955) and Hazel Beamer's upcoming marriage to Henry Miles Cutler, Sr. (1901-1950). There are also several picture postcards sent from traveling friends and family and a poem.</dc:description><dc:format>application/pdf</dc:format><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Baker, Sallie, 1862-1953--Correspondence</dc:subject><dc:subject>Teachers--Georgia--Thomasville</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cutler, Hazel Beamer, 1901-1980--Correspondence</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cutler, Hazel Beamer, 1901-1980--Marriage</dc:subject><dc:subject>Families--Georgia--Thomasville</dc:subject><dc:subject>Haggin, Ben Ali, 1882-1951</dc:subject><dc:subject>Artists--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Dance--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Dancers--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Valentino, Rudolph, 1895-1926</dc:subject><dc:subject>Actors--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Hammerstein, Oscar, II, 1895-1960</dc:subject><dc:subject>Musical theater producers and directors--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Lyricists--New York (State)--New York</dc:subject><dc:subject>Genealogy</dc:subject><dc:title>Letters to Sallie Baker</dc:title><dc:type>Text</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
