Barton Vt. June. 18-1953 Dearest Family, Here it is Thursday and the few moments I have had to sit down and write. I have been awake since four this morning Miles came in our the train from Boston and we talked instead of us trying [to] go back to sleep. He went to New Haulce with the golf team you know did very well and had a wonderful time. I do want to tell you all about out trip so I am going to start at the very beginning. We left Jville at 5 a.m. had breakfast in our favorite little hotel in Perrey lunch in Athens and spend the night in Ashville. Monday we left Ashville at 10 a.m. had lived at another of our per spots the Virginia House is is a ba hauce made in a green house very charming 2 and delicious food It is near Marion Va. spend the night in Roanoke where we stuffed ourselves with lobsters at Archies We had air-conditioning and television in our motel which we enjoyed thoroughly. Tuesday Left Roanoke at Tue Had breakfast at the Natural Bridge That was the hottest deep drive up the Shenandoah we have ever had We spend the night in Hagerstown Md. in all of the most luxurious Motels we have ever stayed in. Johnnie & I took the room with the television and at twelve the announcer followed up the Worcester towards story with It then hopped over to Exeles and demolished the Country Club. We were worried to death because we knew Miles might very well have been there. So though it was midnight Miles called Mr. Daft (Miles advisor) and he said Miles was in class at the time it struck about 5 oclock. 3 Wednesday We left Hagerstown at two and spend the night near the George Washington bridge just across from New York. Thursday We started out at two and drove over thru beautiful Parlsevaigs to Sudheery Mass. I loved our evening there We went Longfellows Wayside elms and I got a tremendous kick out of it. It has been an Inn since 1650 and was was bought by Henry Ford and presented to the town. as a matter of fact it is in the Country and charming. Has been bid nosells two lovely ball-rooms and of course tap rooms, dining-rooms, living rooms, etc. all furnished with beautiful antiques. I loved the tiny cozy dining-room where Laffyette and Washington dined. You would have enjoyed it as much as I did! Friday We left at at two and arrived at Rye Beach the Drake Hotel at 12. 4 As soon as we unpacked we drove into Exeter (10 miles) and picked up Miles fr lunch. While he rehearsed in the afternoon we showed Johnnie around and his eyes bugged. I dont think he had any idea it was so large. Then we picked up Mr. & Mrs. Kerevieves they were wonderful to niece his first year, and took them to the Jamsus Warrens at Kittery Maine fr lobsters. They were charming. After we returned there we parked by the ocean and chatted fr ages. Saturday We spend the first part of morning helping Miles pack. I wish you could have seen the bulging auction including ours! Then the four of us play golf and believe us it was no under statement to say the club was demolished! However nothing was as bad as the Worcester area we drove thru it was dreadful.Thank goodness 5 it occurred Tuesday instead of Thursday as it would have caught us After golf we had lunch at Keert[s]z then rushed over to the beach to change our clothes Class Day was held in the gym at three and it was wonderful. We would directly gave there to the Saltonshall tea which was held on his huge lawn. These we had discovers at the after which we went to the dance in the gym even Hank & I Johnnie to the movies which I think he enjoyed more than anything in Exeter the addresses were a little tiring to a youngster! Sunday we went to the Seresser delivered by Mr. Saltonstall in Exeters lovely Church all yours fr the academy. It was an excellent sermon that was followed by the Cum Laude luncheon fr the honor boys and their Fathers. That have Hank a 6 big kick said the only way he ever made it was thru Miles! Johnnie & I ate at the Inn and went three the old Garrison House. It was originally an old Indian fort built in 1650 and made into a house in the 1700s Very interesting. at three we gained Hank & Miles and went to the gym fr the graduation exercises. After the exercises I have as Lawond addressed there they go out and gave a huge circle on the lawn where they are presented with their diplomas, the circle becoming smaller & smaller It is quite a sight. Miles then went to his room to do a little packing fr his New Haven trip and Hank Johnnie & I went to the movies. They had Young Bess and the Coronation pictures and we were disappointed in both. We then picked up Miles and drove to Warrens fr 7 a farewell lobster dinner. Monday. Miles left with the golf team and we drove to Barton arriving about four. Tuesday and Wednesday were spent getting settled and breaking in the new girl who is excellent. And now after being up since four I am on the weary side. Will you keep this letter in case we would to refresh our memories on the trip. I am enclosing your check. I am so glad you are well do keep that way because I love you dearly. Devotedly Hazel. P.S. Hank is out teaching Miles to drive the new car which is a beauty! The Exeter Inn Exeter New Hampshire Thursday Dearest Family We have had the most delightful trip down on over here and I want to tell you about it while I have a spare moment. We (Miles, Sandy, Hank & I) left Barton at 8 oclock Wed. morning and arrived here at two. It was a perfectly beautiful drive thru the White Mountains thru Franconia Notch and past the Old Man of the Mountain which the boys had never seene. He brought Sandy so he could conduct us thru Exeter. This he did in the afternoon and I was surprised to find the academy so beautiful. The buildings are brick with white columns and all ivy-covered. The campus is green and lined with lovely trees and the houses are lovely old white ones Front St. is so pretty with its old houses and churches, the town was founded in 1648 and the school in 1740. The tiny white original building is now the Deans house. Miles is crazy about it too and can hardly wait to enter! We are staying at The Exeter Inn and had a nice dinner here last night. Then the boys went to the movies and H & I drove over to Hampton Beach which is only twenty miles away. We had a appointment at 9:30 this morning with Mr. Rounds he was very nice and told Miles year to keep up the good world and there would be [s]no doubt about his getting in. Then we took a beautiful drive along the ocean and had lunch at Potsmania Maine a wonderful sea-food affair with stewed clams and Maine lobsters. We went to the big navy boat there as Miles was anxious to see a submarine but the boat is The Exeter Inn Exeter New Hampshire closed to the public on account of the Korean war-fare and I think they are very wise. To-night we are trying out a place Sandy likes ([???] fr its [???]) and seeing more of the surrounding country It is flat and hot here only 50 miles from Bareton. I wish now we had brought Johnnie he said he had rather stay on the farm so we took him up to New York Tuesday and will pick him up Friday night. We plan to leave here after breakfast and have dinner in Barton Friday. I wouldnt take anything fr seeing where Miles is going to be and I do wish you two could see it also. I taught seven cards which I will send when I get home and get an envelope large enough to put them in. I am enclosing a letter from Kathryn, which I thought you might like to read though you probably have one just like it. I am so sorry poor Aunt Blanche is having such a time I still think it could have been better if she could have quietly slipped away. Would it be possible fr Aunt Rosa to run down fr a week or so I know she would be glad to see her and Katheryn is very fond of her too. Must close now as they are ready fr dinner. Worlds of love, Hazel Saturday Dearest Family Here we are in N. Y. Arrived Tuesday. Had a lovely drive down and Ida had 33 all ready fr us. You dont know how nice it is to be back here again I just love this old place and its so pretty now with its new floors. Hank couldnt find anything in Barton and I am really tickled as I had much rather live down here where my friends are. And its so wonderful to have a place like this too live in and we are both awfully happy here because its the first time since we were married that we have really lived alone. Ve have either been travelling or with relatives. Ida is so nice and such a loyal old thing its certainly refreshing to have a servant like that in these times. She is coming every Tuesday and Friday to clean and cook dinner and we will have all our company on those nights. Hank & E came over last night and afterwards we went to the opening of the Rodeo in Madison Square Garden. It was good but couldnt compare with the ones we saw in Arizona and Wyoming. To see those smart little cow-ponies made us both crazy to ride again. Havent had any desire to rise an Eastern horse. We drove out to see Babe yesterday. She looked badly and I think she just needed cheering up. She and Carrowey are coming in to have dinner and spend the night with us some time soon. Babe hasnt been to N.Y. since she came to my wedding! They are having quite a hard time in fact all the couples we know here are having quite a struggle. Hank [???] loses his job in January and they have a [???] of $350 a month on that East side apartment. I certainly with Hank didn;t have to pay $90 a month fr his room fr another year! At least we have a place here and I think we are mighty lucky. Hank doesnt care 2 much what work he does as he sas he is only going to work fr three or four years then he expects to have his freedom and quit!!! The fortune is not to come from his earning but from investments. He is putting every spare penny into them all the time. When the market goes down again as it will do after election we are going to buy some more at least he is! He is a funny kid Ida has a chance here to go into a new branch of the National City Bank as Assistant Manager and guess where he wants to work Macys! I admit that advancement is rapid and the pay wonderful I mean fr executive positions but ney its such hard work! For those positions they take only college-bred men and they have to pass three rigid intelligence tests, and they start you right at the bottom. A friend of Hanks left the brockerage business and went there just a year ago. They started him out behind the razor counter and now he is assis. buyer in the rug dept. and gets $6 ovr a year. If you are worth it they certainly push you ahead. However Hank has never had to knuckle down to it and I think he would get awfully sick of it. Just so he gets something to keep him occupied his salary would be just that much extra to invest. However I have learned that everyone must work out their own life! Now, about the house. I am glad the mattress is there and hope its in a comfortable are (Your letter has just arrived) Thanks for the information about Betty! Now about the taxes if you can save June I am going to send $150 fr the tax next month so there will be enough. About the linoleum have the man who is painting the house or someone measure the kitchen & bathroom. If you tell me what size they are I will go down to Macys and have something pretty shipped down It is so cheap up here 3 I am sure it wont cost as much to ship as to buy in Lville. Let me know if your received the curtains I think the furniture if the walls are green will be nicer white or cream color as they were. The kitchen will look weet wont it? When you get your stane dont forget to have that special meter fr electrical appearances put in it will save you lots of money. Dont forget to send me the measurements so I can fix up the floors. I am not surprised there were lots of repair. When we get it in good order this time we will try to keep it that way. Have everything fixed I will see that you have enough money. I am glad the house is at least going to be white are you [???] green fr the lattice work? Now about the roof. Be sure and answer these questions so I can tell you what to do. Is our roof tin? Has it even bee painted? If not how much would it cost and what color could they use? I dont like black. Every roof should be painted to protect it from getting leaks. They have special roof paint you know, that has lots more lead in it than house paint. Be sure and take all money fr freight installing etc. fr the stone and of the tax. While we are on the kitchen do the walls need calsomining With everything fresh they may look dirty. If so let me know how much it would be. How are the other walls? I love the coming old-fashioned wall paper they use now and day would love to fix up the bed- rooms. Mother I am so sorry your back is still troubling you. Its a perfect shame do take good care of yourself. I meant to tell you before. Why dont you unpack to Navajo rugs and use them? They probably would go very well in the bed-rooms and you could use them in the halls. You cant possibly hurt them and the more they are used the nicer they become because the [???] wears off. And they are awfully easy to clean. Use them goodness knows when we will. Loads & loads of love. Devotedly, Hazel 1230 PM VT. 19. Mrs. E. H. Beamer 124 North Lane St. Thomasville Georgia From H. Cutler Part St. Barton Vermont Barton Vt. June 19 - 47 Dearest Family, First of all I am enclosing your check. I was so glad to get such a nice [???] letter and thanks a lot fr the things you have forwarded. I am sorry little Nicky is grieving but I am rather glad he is sleeping at 327 It will scare away any potential robber! However I expect 2 he will realize soon we have gone fr the summer and sleep at your house. It is rainy and cold here. Everyone says it has rained fr weeks and every one still wears winter coats. However the boys are having a wonderful time with their gang. Hank came down with grippe the day we arrived (Tuesday) and is still in bed so he missed his direction meeting after all. I [???] he feels miserable all Tuesday when he let me 3 drive most of the way from New York here. We were by N.Y. after all on account of the floods in Reedland. Our little girl Dolores Perry doesnt know much about cooking but she is a darling and very willing and anxious to learn. The whole point is do I know enough to teach her! We had the loveliest trip up we have ever had and if the rest of the summer is a bore it will almost be worth it. Ass you know we left June 11 at 8:20 Our first stop was the Magic Hill which wasnt very magic or even much of a hill! We drove thru Atlanta and had lunch on the outsides. We spent the first night at a nice Inn Walasige in the north Georgia mountains 3100 ft. up! June 12. Thursday we left Walasige (I turned over the entire bottle of ink so bought a new one of washable hence the change in color!) Well we left at 9:30 had a beautiful day and a beautiful drive over the Smokies 5 had lunch down in Gatlinger afterwards we drove up again to Clingmare Down where we ran across a mother bear and two cute cubs to the boys delight. We had come prepared with boxes of graham crackers and you should have seen the mob taking pictures while the boys fed them! Then we drove thru the Cherokee Indian Reservation (where we took snaps of the boys with a cute little Indian boy) to Ashville then up too the beginning of the Blue 6 Ridge Pathway to Little Switzerland. It is simply magnificent around there fr continuous magnificence we think it ahead of the Smokies. We stayed over at the Big Lymn it was so lovely. We had our own cabin with 2 bed-rooms and aquising bath and the food in the little restaurant and recreation hall as excellent. our alternater registered from 4000 & 6000 all day. Friday June 13 after breakfast we took a drive down the mountain 7 to Marion over to Spruce Pine and the miles of unfinished Parkway toward Ashville Simply gorgeous Venue. Spent the night again at our cabin. Saturday June 14 We left at nine and drove over the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyland to Roanoke where we had lunch. We drove our longest drive to-day over 400 miles on curving mountain roads I dont see how Hank did it. We had driven at a nice Inn on the Parkway and spend the night at Skyland. Our cottage there was the most wonderful super our we will ever have in our lives! It belongs to the man who owns the whole thing and they never rent it unless they have too. We were delighted they let us in It was beautifully built painted throughout completely equipped with kitchen 3 master bed-rooms furnace and a living room that was just out of this world. At our end was a huge stone fire-place and [afterwards] across the 9 other was a tremendous plate glass window overlooking the Shenandoah Valley. The town of Luray sparkled like a needle on diamonds the cottage itself was right on the edge of the mountain. As tired as we were we sat fr hours casing out of the windows. It [was] like Hitter Bereht[e]sgaden never have been. I would loved to have stayed there the rest of the summer. I frgot to say that we stopped in Letington long enough to show the boys [???] and Washington & Lee the Museum where Lees [???] statue is and the skeleton of Traveller. Sunday June 12: Left Skyland at nine and had a beautiful day to complete our Skyline drive and thru all three lovely historical country to Gettysbur Here to my surprise and great pleasure Hank decided to lay over and we really did the Battlefield as I have always wanted to do it. He got a guide and took a 2 hour tour. Then we went to the aquarium and then to the fairly new electrical map which was simply thrilling. It recreates in lights all the battles and the man who operates and lectures was excelled. We hope too do that one thing again this fall we loved it so! How I longed fr you you would have loved it. We had dinner finally at the Peace Sight Inn near the Monument Roosevelt dedicated. Spent the night in cabins treated practically in the middle of Picketts change and I could hardly sleep fr thinking of it! Monday June 16 We left at two. Had lunch in Harrisburg and reached N.Y. at 4. Stayed at our favorite little 70 Park and after a hasty trip by request of the boys to [???] 10x Stores and a nice dinner we had a cozy view with Hank & E. after Skyland and Gettysburg the red of the [???] was bound to be all anti-climax. 13 Tuesday June 17 Left N.Y. at 10 Had lunch at crummy old Wiggins Janeree in North Hampton. Dinner near Hardees and drove into a beach desolate Barton at 8:30. Hank & I by that time were both suffering from a case of direction. I knew it and that I would not recover until Palm Day. But Hank called his grippe and as I say I did most of the driving. Every time I began to feel proud of the way I was negotiating those mountain curves (at 40 45 which H insisted on so we wouldnt lose time!) H would rewark from the back seat You know how sick I must be to let you drive!!! Anyhow he took to his bed ruined the directors meeting which I think was the main reason fr taking to his bed and there he is to this day! Dr. Buch called (by request from H) t-day found no fever and left pills as big as billiard balls. H took our look at these and sent me out fr anchovies & beer Having taken these instead of the pills he feels much better to-night and I believe will recover. I have just called the boys in and counted a record crowd fr the gang on our lawn 31!!! Please tell Aunt Rosa again how much we did enjoy her candy. Let her & Jean read this log if Jean think it would interest them and please keep it fr me as Miles wants to write up parts of the trip in next years school competitions and I will never remember all the details. Worlds of love to both of you from all of us ~ Devotedly Hazel. Wednesday Dearest Family I am so tired to-night I probably cant write a decent letter. It has been very hot here to-day and the kids and I went on a taste this afternoon. We rose down to the Battery on the E which they adore then took a ride to Staten Island. I have such a good time with them. They are looking so well now and have gained back all their lost weight. I am gaining too all back to 102. I am so sorry to hear of the accident Carlisles boy had. Thank you very much fr telling me. I will drop her a note to-night. I am also sending Mrs. Bessie a belated birthday card. She was my Sunday school teacher fr years and I was very fond of her. I wonder why they wrote it up at such great length before it happened it sounded lovely. Hank & I are going up next Tuesday and they are taking Miles along. He is delighted as he will visit his grandparents fr two weeks before we arrive. Hazel B. will do some fishing they return Sunday. We go up Sunday June 8th. We plan to drive and Arin is going with us and will remain until the Bynhemers calls probably around July 15. Then Arin will take her vacation and we will get two local girls. I cant realize the winter has gone it passed so quickly even though it was a hard one fr us. Val has been in fr a couple of meals and last night we gave a really nice dinner party. I had lots of flowers and all my pretty china and silver and everything 2 looked lovely. I gave them cold couso[???] (green turtle) turkey- dressing, cranberry sauce, wild rice, asparagus, sliced tomatoes, lemon ice with creme-de-menthe and coffee in the living room. Dr. and Mrs. Hurd (she was a Welbely girl) Dr Hurd and Miss Nace. Everyone seemed to have a grand time and they all called to-day to tell me so which I thought was very sweet. It is our last dinner this season. From now on Ill begin to polish the silver ate, and put it away. I really miss our entertaining during the summer. Dinner at night and then is unheard of. However I do enjoy the bridge games and swimming and the lovely country. Must close now and write Miss Bessie and Caroline. Words of love to my darling family Devotedly, Hazel. New York. 11. 9 NW. 4. 1937. Dearest Family, I am not waiting until next week to send the check because this was such an exciting day I want to tell you about it. President Roosevelt had lunch at his town house and living next door we had a fx seat. It was really thrilling! We suspected he might be coming because when I went out fr groceries at nine there were a half a dozen cops in front of his home instead of the usual one. Feauh the elevator man told me he was expected between ten and one. Of course every minute it grew more and more exciting cops around by the scores and news-reel and cameramen and private detectives. Hay was coming fr lunch but when she arrived I had only set the table! I couldnt bear to leave the window fr fear I would miss him! They cleared the entire beach of cars & people of course crowds collected on the corners of Madison and Park. For a long time previous to his arrival no one was allowed in the beach unless they lived here and then just before no one at all was allowed. When he left, Hak was among the crowd at the corner, not allowed to come home! That tickled me! Lea, the maid, altho had an awful time getting in. She was so mad about it she wouldnt deign to look out the window and watch him depart! It was thrilling to me the beach free of policemen mounted & motorcycle cops & loads of cameramen lined up with their flashlight. The roofs of the Beniderets house was full of policeman & every little back-yard our dining-room looks new. The big cop on the corner of the roof nearet us never took his eyes off our window even though we had Miles standing up in ours and must have looked harmless. Arin thought it wouldnt matter whither Miles saw him or not but to me it was important. It so seldom we know when we witness history and some 2 day when he is an old man he may enjoy remembering the day Mother lifted him to the window to see the President. He really sacrificed his dinner because I snacthed him up in the middle of it and of course it was stone cold later I thought it worth it! WHen he arrived about twenty police formed a cordon in front of his steps fr his car. Of course motor-cycles came first then an open car with about six new on the running board secret service men riding that way so they could jump off at the sound of a shot. They took their places in the cordan of police each with a hand an his revolver and many a glare at the windows. His family arrived in the first car. His mother two sons and a daughter-in-law. Then the President and until you see him you dont realize how lame he is. They ejected his legs out first legs in steel braces then with the assistance of two men he stood up and the press was allowed to take photographs. His affliction made me feel so badly I wept until he disappeared in the house. Rest neither Ann nor Miles knew only the fat policeman on the food. Kay arrived after the excitement but was here fr the departure. By that time Arin and the policeman had become acquainted & he announced all the dignitaries as they arrived! La Georgia Farelyets It was a great help! The President left in a car with the top down and we had a grand view. He is very skilful the way he swings his large body with his poor useless legs into a car. His valet or someone stepped in then and put the Presidents coat on and you should have seen the anxious look he gave the windows! I suppose all those cops were N.Y.s finest sharp-shooters that could have popped off a man as he drew, I wondered afterward what would have happened to us if someone had thrown a bomb! As a matter of fact, with all their precautions some one could get him if they really wished, I am sure I would be scared to death in a position like his unless they adopt a 3 point of view. It was after three when he left incorted by a motor-cycle calvacade of around forty and Kay & I who had planned to go to the Metropolitan Marener were so frayed with excitement we we just [?]lopped instead! I did summon up energy enough to go over and tell Dearie because I knew she would be thrilled. My I have written a regular epistle and by the way, I am no longer keeping a diary, so tuck this letter away and some day I will read it to Miles and freshen his memory. Im afraid he didnt make a verty starting appearance, he stood in the window with a bib around his neck sucking his thumb! Worlds of love to my darling family Devotedly, Hazel. Mrs. E. H. Beamer 124 N. Lous St. Thomasville Georgia From, Mrs. H. M. Cutler Barton VT. Wednesday 23. Dearest Mother I was so happy to get Mrs. Carters card and know you are getting along so beautifully. Its taken a big load off my mind. Be careful though and dont over-do it and please take a to Church. I hope Arthur has shown up by now. I planted twelve beautiful red geraniums in the window box around the front bay window yesterday and they look so pretty. I have sent two boxes down. One small one has a school bell in it an old-timer. If you ring that Mother they can hear you at the Scott Hotel! The other is full of china. Will you unpack it and let us know if any is broken so we can collect damages. Just keep it at your house until I return. I 2 bought it from the girl in the next block who has a sort of antique shop. They were dirt cheap as she havent the slightest ideas of values. We received a box from Eleanor Rust yesterday with a pair of flowered pants and a checked suit fr Johnnie. It was a wonderful wind-fall. Hope we see them this summer. We had four beautiful days when we just arrived. Yesterday it was 87 and wound up with a big thunder-storm. To-day is rainy and cool and we will probably light the fire to-night. We dont do much socially as you know. Played bridge with matches Cs contact club yesterday. We have played golf twice and Johnnie and I both made 46! That is very good as neither of us have ever broken 50 before! I am enclosing checks fr $150 fr the month of July 3 Here it is Friday and I havent mailed your letter yet. Miles came in last night for the week-end and are we fad to have him. It is wonderful to have the whole family to-gether again. He, Hank & I are going to play golf this afternoon and we are going to have a family four-square to-morrow with Johnnie. He is crazy about his job. Mrs. Carter your nice letter came yesterday and I certainly appreciated it. Loads of love to both of you Devotedly Hazel. Mrs. E. H. Please read this letter to [Meas] Mrs. Carter as I will never have time to write both of you Thank her fr locking up the silver and for doing the sheets. And I am sorry to say I have one more job. We called from there We had a wonderful dinner at an old Inn and breakfast in an old stone Hotel dating from President Adams time. June 14 Mon. After bfast we headed fr Hill where we spent all morning I cannot tell you how impressed all of us were with the school and the personnel The headmaster of was charming an old friend of Sis Wades and Paddy Vanderbilts 4. cousin. We also like all the instructors. The school is amazing have never seen so many advantages fr kids in a prep school. It is exactly like Exeter except 400 attend instead of 800. In some respects it has many things Exeter does not have. We were crazy about it Johnnie also He was really impressed and I am sure he will be very happy there! We ate lunch in Allentown Pa. and spent the night in a Motel beyond Port Jeruis N.Y. June 15 Tues. We didnt drive far to-day. Spent the night at the Janglewood Motel near Pittsfeild as we wanted to drive around Williams College the next day. After we left Williamstown we drove 5 thru Bermington Vt. and believe it or not all three of us climbed to the top of the Monument on the Battlefeild. 250 ft! Hanks legs have not recovered yet! It was a beautiful day and of course we had a magnificent view of the country. Had lunch at a Mountain View Grile near Wallington and spent the night at the best spot of all. Trails End Inn is literally built into the Mt. around the boulders. The one in the dining-room drips water and has ferns growing on it. I am enclosing folder We had a darling cottage perched above the Inn very rustic large stone fire-place in living-room and two bed-rooms. It is right on top of Mendise Mt. and I cannot tell you how beautiful it was. We had a huge fire in the evening and nearly froze in the morning. 6 June 17. We arrived in Barton about 2:30. It was the most leisurely trip we have ever taken and one of the most delightful. Since we have been here the weather has been marvellous. Clean gorgeous sparkling far-seeing days that are just out of this world. We have spent all day settling down. Tomorrow we are all taking too the peaks and undoubtedly too Willonghley in the evening. This is quite an epistle and very poorly written as I am weary and anxious to get to bed. Loads and loads of love to both of you and do take good care of yourselves. Devotedly Hazel Mrs. E. H. Tell Mrs. Carter I am still trying to beautify this little place 2 and went out to-day to dig up some beautiful fences to place around the little office. Beamer 124 North Loue St. Thomasville Georgia From Hazel Cutler Barton Vt. Thursday. Dearest Mother and Louise My thoughts to-day are very much on last year this time. I arrived in Tville a year ago to-day. I still miss darling Sallie dreadfully and I know you do too. I am sorry Ernest is still ill. I hope if he has to go it will be before we return. We are so fond of him it would just about kill us to go to his funeral. We are still having rain and cold. I have never seen anything like it. The papers say Vermont around Seattle Washing and Jacksonville Fla. there is this rain belt. The nest of the country seems dry and hot. The sun did come out yesterday and the golf links and the lakes were jammed! Good thing everyone took advantage of it as it is pouring again to-day. Am enclosing Beulahs check also [*This pays her thru Sept. 4*] 2 How nice of Jean to bring you some jelly. Everyone is so fond of you. About Zealena she is so faithful and stood by all last summer you remember So I think she should get two weeks off with full pay. Loyalty is so rare it should be appreciated and rewarded. Miles is home fr the rest of the summer now. He took a course in American History just to get some extra credits and to be with his Sigma Chi cronies. They really just had a wonderful time. He brought an awfully nice toy home with him Bill McArthur from Montreal. He left yesterday they had a grand time golfing and bowling when it rained. Miles is going up to visit him the last of August. They live in Montreal but have a summer house on a lovely lake where Bill keeps his sail boat. Must close fr this time Devotedly Worlds of love to both of you. Hazel. Mrs. E. H. Beamer 124 North Loue St. Thomasville Georgia From H. Cutler Barton Vt. Friday. Dearest Mother and Louise. To-day is a si t-in rain and the weather forecast from Montreal says it will continue thru Tuesday! Played bridge with the Country 2 Club on Tuesday. Wednesday evening Hank & I took the Omens up to Lindsay Beach on Lake Memphragog fr dinner. We had never been there before and I think it is one of the most beautiful views on the lake. A big storm blew up just as we were leaving and the mist and clouds around the mountain tops and islands looked just like Scotland I imagine! You were sweet to remember Miles birthday. We expect him in some time to-night and will give him his gifts. Hank & I are having a grand time on their trip. Sandy is now in France. He won a lottery the golf club had here. A $150 set of clubs or $75 in cash! It broke Johnnies heart not to win. However I wish some poor boy could have won it Loads of love to both of you Devotedly, Hazel. Mrs. E. H. Loads of love to both of you Hazel Saturday Dearest Mother and Mrs. Carter After weeks of rain and cold we are having a stretch of beautiful weather. Thank goodness it came just when it did as the Fair is on fr five days and it would have ruined them if it had rained them out. We went over Wednesday night to see the Hell Drivers which are always thrilling and we plan to go Sunday to the Rodeo. They have beautiful fire-works every night which we can see from our front porch! Miles had another awfully nice fraternity brother come up fr a visit this week and we enjoyed him immensely. This one was from Pennsylvania. We have done nothing terribly exciting just the regular bridge 2 party and the usual golf. Did I tell you what a nice time we had last Sunday? Miles played in a match in Newport and Johnnie, Hank & I drove over to Colebrook New Hampshire played golf on their lovely course, had a picnic at the beautiful water-face we discovered the week before then drove home. The half Indian Shortslunes who runs it has 5000 beautiful sapphie and pastels. One called Breath of Spring wsa gorgeous. I had no idea they were so large but he says in November they will be twice as big. Their pelt being $40 each. He took us thru all the sheds the storage house (10 below zero) where they keep the fish and horse-meat they feed them and showed us his fierce Doberman Piecer dogs which guard them. They also have loads of sheep around to keep the grass short so they can find the mink when one escapes. Have never seen anything like it. Wish I had enough pelts fr a fur coat right now!
