The workers carried placards like this one as they marched to make their plight known. The sanitation workers were eventually successful, and the placards they held aloft have since become iconic symbols of the civil rights movement. Unfortunately, their fight for respect and better working conditions cost the nation the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was shot dead at the Lorraine Motel while in Memphis aiding the workers in their struggle.</dc:description><dc:description>Gift of Dr. Patricia Bath to the Tubman African American Museum.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Segregation--United States</dc:subject><dc:subject>African Americans--Segregation</dc:subject><dc:subject>Civil rights demonstrations--Tennessee--Memphis</dc:subject><dc:subject>African Americans--History</dc:subject><dc:subject>Labor disputes--Tennessee--Memphis</dc:subject><dc:subject>Strikes and lockouts--Tennessee--Memphis</dc:subject><dc:subject>Signs and signboards--Tennessee--Memphis</dc:subject><dc:subject>Sanitation workers--Tennessee--Memphis</dc:subject><dc:subject>Civil rights movements--Tennessee--Memphis</dc:subject><dc:subject>African Americans--Civil rights--Tennessee--Memphis</dc:subject><dc:subject>African Americans--History--1964-</dc:subject><dc:subject>Sanitation Workers Strike, Memphis, Tenn., 1968</dc:subject><dc:title>I am a man placard</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
