Realizing that we have fallen short of our many duties and that we have omitted some of our professional touches, we are indeed hoping that you will forgive the shortcomings and at the same appreciate and enjoy what we as a working staff has compiled as your greatest "Souls in Action," for 1971-72. It is my sincere hope that this edition of the 1972 Tiger in future years will recapture some of the hearts and minds of those who lived and experienced the many walks of life at Savannah State College, during the moments, hours, days, months, and weeks of the year 1971-72. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the staff and members whose time and dedication was so earnestly given in order to approach deadlines. In conclusion, I leave these words; "There may be gold and' multitude of pearls, but the hands of labour, I think, are the most precious pearls." Years from now, tuni to these pages and you may be able to recapture the happenings of 1971-72, "Souls In Action". Yours in Brotherhood Curtbert Burton, Coordinator Student Publication Staff DOrBLE 19- SSC has gained much from the forty-six years of service given by Brother George Henry Brooks. He has given much of his life and energy to fur- thering the philosophy to which the college is dedi- cated improving our democratic society through serving the needs of man. Thus it is through the vein of such a man that the life blood of the college flows and contribute toward its growth and success. Therefore we humbly and gratefully dedicate the 1972 edition of the Tiger to Mr. George Henry Brooks, who has been employed at State for 46 years. Mr. Brooks, we salute you with honor. -72 DEDICATION In the many years of continuous progress, there have been many individuals who have strived to make Savannah State College a more homelike and efficient place to at- tend college; but none have been more dedicatd than Mr. Homer Lewis. Brother Lewis has been employed at Savannah State for 30 years, and is considered one of the most reliable men on the Plant Operations Staff. It is with deep pride that the 1972 Tiger Staff make this double dedication in behalf of Mr. Homer Lewis. SOULS IN ACTION I Got It! Where does this box go? CO-ED WEEK-1972 44 A TRIBUTE TO THE BLACK MOSES OF PEACE ''Dr. Martin Luther King Day'' was highly honored by the students, faculty, and visitors, large attendance in the Memorium of a "Great Black Leader." A TRIBUTE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. Who was this man that led the way? And let all of glory shine - - - - for a brighter coming day. Who was this man that said "Let Freedom Ring" There's no doubt in my answer, He's Dr. Martin Luther King! Yes, it was he who carried all of the heaviest loads. To put all of his people on that up going road For he wanted his people to live as they should To join hands with all men in Brotherlyhood. But now let*s venture back into time and into the olden days. When our forefathers and mothers all worked as slaves. You see. "Work" was the only thing that our forefathers knew They had to work until they died for they'd never get through. For when you would have finished with plowing Jacob's field. There was more cotton to be picked and more corn to be yielded. "Just work all day" was what your master said and if you did not work, You'd be filled with lead. Yes, that's how things were in the in the olden days. But from yesterday until today We've come a very long way. We've come a long way black people Yet we have so far to go. Since now we must destroy the signs of "Old of Jim Crow" Well God got fed up with the white so he sent for Martin Luther and he gave him a tool. This tool was called love, and God knew that one day It would carry Martin's people A very long way ! Martin knew that he had several foes and enemies But this did not stop him fron to Memphis, Tennessee. When on the hotel balcony Martin stood with pride, And a few seconds later Fatal shots were fired ! The bullets were lodged deep within his head. And everyone knew that he'd soon be dead. . . The people then cried, "Lord why, oh why" "Lord why did you let, our dear Martin die?" And God said, "I've been thinking. about his troubles and woe And I've decided not to send him away anymore. For I figured he was tired and that he needed a rest" We cannot question God, because he knew that was best. Well to this little story there's more to be added on But time does not allow me to elaborate nn the many fine qualities of this man! A man of DIGNITY. MORALITY just fightii and striving no matter what was the case. BLACK Brothers and Sisters, I don't think that Martin Luther Can ever be REPLACED! ! ! ! By Ve: Shelrie Merriweather "You got me going in circles.' "Look out fellows here we come.' I wonder who called me? Hey, how about sending one of those chicks this way. 'Let me at least wipe my mouth.' Mmmmmm Good! Please, I don't even know you. This is all I have, do you still want piece? It was just my imagination running away with me. Now you said 2+2 is equal to What? Now, where are the other aces? Do you see how that monster fight? The more lunch for lunch bunch. Kenny receives honor award from Doc. Oh! No you wouldn't. On the outside looking in! Whow! Another Einstein in the making. NATIONAL PRESS! INSTITrX] 1972 Will you please type what's on the paper? Donald Wendell speaks. It is indicative of the kind of students we have enrolled at Savannah State College. We take great pride and delight in saluting them for a job well done. The 1971-72 academic year has been one of greatness for us. We had Miss Lena Home as a guest of the College in August, 1971^ Julian Bond and John Lewis in February, 1972, and Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm in March, 1972. Each of these great Black lead- ers gave our students, faculty, and administration new inspiration and dedication. We saw the establishment of a student loan fund from which students could borrow without the usual "red tape" accompanying loans. We saw the seniors participating in interview sessions and in sessions designed to help raise scores on national examinations. We saw a "togetherness" which we believe will sig- nal a new era in the history of our College. We offer sincere and myriad congratulations to the wonderful class of 1972. We pray that God will continue to watch over them. We ask continued cooperation from those who will remain. To the staff of the TIGER, and particularly Editor Janice E. Bryant, we offer our deep gratitude for all of the hours of labor used in delivering to us the finest TIGER to show up yet at Savannah State College. When he started out SSC had only four sports to contend with now they have six. Frazier attended A.E. Beach High School where he played halfback and quarter- back. He also attended Tuskegee Institute where he played halfback. He was an All- American in College and also was recipient of the Most Valuable Player in a Chicago Classic game against Wilberforce College. He has also served as Baseball Coach for three years at SSC and was also As- sistant Football Coach for a number of years. He took over as Athletic Director in the early sixties and once had to double as Athletic Director and Basketball Coach. He coached basketball before Leo Richardson came to SSC. JOHN H. MYLES Head Football Coach John H. Myles came to Savannah State when it was admitted into the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Myles took the place of Leo Richardson so that more time could be devoted to one sport by one head coach. He played his collegiate ball at Savannah State College where he was winner and was named to the Chicago Defender Small College Team. In playing army ball, he was offered pro contracts by two professional teams. Coach Myles is an alumnus of the college, having graduated with the B.S. Degree with a major in math and a minor in biology. He holds the M.A. Degree from New York University in Physical Edu- cation and Health Education and a Sixth Year Certificate from New York University in Physical Education. He has coached in the college ranks for four years. A coach who believes in fair play but also likes to win. Coach Myles with his football know-how will surely lead Savannah State's Fighting Tigers back on the winning side. Young Qerk Registrar IVEW BUILDINGS STUDENT UNION BUILDING NEW GIRLS DORMITORY Why on earth would they use paper to help launch a moon shot? The paper is used in this 327-foot Apollo service tower. As honeycomb panel cores. Laminated to aluminum "skins". The panels form the enclosing wall of the 120-foot-wide tower base. And the huge hinged gates which open and envelop the rocket dur- ing servicing. Why paper honeycomb? Because it's incred- ibly strong. And incredibly light. The giant gates swing easy. And precious pounds are saved in the 32-story structure whose weight can flatten the railroad wheels below when they are not in motion. Union Camp honeycomb has hundreds of other uses in both commercial and residen- tial construction. Everything from floors to walls and to roofs. Even the sky isn't the limit. The paper for Union Camp's Honeycomb is manufactui'ed at the huge Savannah Complex, the world's largest pulp-to-container plant. ffljl USED BUT NOT ABUSED FAKE THE WHEEl AND MAKE A DEAL RALPH LIPSEY MOTORS PHONE 2J2-2282 2310 MONTGOMERY STREET SAVANNAH, GEORGIA 31401 Bank with the People who like People!
