He was born in Halifax County, North Carolina, on April 8, 1771, to Sarah Warren and Matthew Rabun. He moved with his father to Greene County (which later became part of Hancock County) in central Georgia in 1785. The family home in Powellton is located ten miles northeast of Sparta.
