Upon her death, Telfair bequeathed her Regency-style home, located on Savannah's St. James Square (renamed Telfair Square in 1883), and the books, furniture, and works of art located therein to the Georgia Historical Society. The society opened the house, built by architect William Jay, to the public in 1886, making the Telfair the oldest public art museum in the South.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:relation>http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/mary-telfair-1791-1875</dc:relation><dc:relation>Forms part of: New Georgia Encyclopedia</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/UND/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/mary-telfair-1791-1875</dc:source><dc:source>Forms part of: New Georgia Encyclopedia</dc:source><dc:subject>Upper class--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>Upper class women--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>Benefactors--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>Women benefactors--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>Telfair, Mary, 1791-1875--Portraits</dc:subject><dc:subject>Telfair, Mary, 1791-1875</dc:subject><dc:title>Mary Telfair</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
