The statue depicts a Confederate soldier, but the figure is clothed in northern attire. It stands on a tall pedestal in front of several storefronts. A crowd of people stands below the base of the statue.The statue quickly became an eyesore to citizens because of its "decidedly northern dress" and shocking appearance. Dutchy's end came during the night of August 14, 1900, when a group of unknown persons tied a lasso around the statue and hauled it to the ground. A few days later it was buried where it had fallen, unceremoniously.
