In 1936 archaeologist Arthur R. Kelly located the remains of a fortified trading establishment in the midst of a Creek Indian archaeological site on the Ocmulgee National Monument. Although historical documentation is lacking, it appeared to be an English trading house established while the Creek Indians were living in the area of present-day Macon during the period 1690-1718. The post is believed to have been burned in the Yamasee War of 1715. The site now is a plot of land framed with wooden planks. A mound rises in the background.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:relation>http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/macon-trading-post</dc:relation><dc:relation>Forms part of: New Georgia Encyclopedia</dc:relation><dc:rights>https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/macon-trading-post</dc:source><dc:source>Forms part of: New Georgia Encyclopedia</dc:source><dc:subject>Trading posts--Georgia--Macon</dc:subject><dc:subject>Creek Indians--Georgia--History</dc:subject><dc:subject>Excavations (Archaeology)--Georgia--Macon</dc:subject><dc:subject>Historic sites--Georgia--Macon</dc:subject><dc:subject>Ocmulgee National Monument (Ga.)</dc:subject><dc:subject>National monuments--Georgia</dc:subject><dc:subject>Mounds--Georgia--Macon</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia--Antiquities</dc:subject><dc:title>Macon Trading Post Site</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
