This project was led by several important archaeologists, especially Joseph R. Caldwell, who is pictured with an excavation team. Several men and one woman stand in the large excavated hole. Three different shell layers are visible in the earth behind the researchers.</dc:description><dc:description>The Irene mounds were located five miles northwest of downtown Savannah in Chatham County, and are now completely destroyed; they lie under the ship docks controlled by the Georgia Ports Authority. The site, however, was almost completely excavated by professional archaeologists from 1937 to 1940 as part of the Works Progress Administration, or WPA, archaeological excavations conducted in many places across Georgia. Its importance rests on the fact that it was the most completely excavated mound site in Georgia.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:relation>http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/irene-mounds</dc:relation><dc:relation>Forms part of: New Georgia Encyclopedia</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/UND/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/irene-mounds</dc:source><dc:source>Forms part of: New Georgia Encyclopedia</dc:source><dc:subject>Mounds--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia--Antiquities</dc:subject><dc:subject>Historic sites--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>Archaeology--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>Archaeologists--Georgia--Savannah</dc:subject><dc:subject>United States.
