Lieutenant Sikes was the first and only Mercer ROTC graduate to be killed in active combat operations. The Student Government Association has initiated action requesting that the drill field used by the Mercer ROTC as a parade ground be designated 'Sikes Field' in memory of Lieutenant Sikes." The dedication ceremonies were held on May 30, 1970.
