He was elected to succeed Dr. Callaway as second president in 1884, and remained president until his death, May 17, 1911. Under his administration, the faculty became integrated; Holsey Hall, Haygood Hall, cottages, and a home for the president were constructed; and Paine Institute became Paine College. Dr. Walker is also considered one of the founders because during his tenure, stability and support were gained. He was a disciplinarian; and he was careful to see that the curriculum included programs suitable for all of those who entered.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Paine College, Collins-Callaway Library, Special Collections and Archives</dc:source><dc:subject>African American universities and colleges</dc:subject><dc:subject>Teachers colleges</dc:subject><dc:subject>College presidents</dc:subject><dc:subject>Buildings</dc:subject><dc:subject>Portraits</dc:subject><dc:title>President Dr. George William Walker, 1884</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
