Carmichael, including his early life, his involvement with Rickenbacker Field (later Dobbins Air Reserve Base) and the Bell Aircraft Corporation in Marietta, and the 1946 governor's race against Eugene Talmadge and Three Governors Controversy. Berry also discusses Carmichael's civic involvement in Marietta and Cobb County. Berry talks about how Carmichael became active in politics through his work in Governor Ellis Arnall's admnistration.</dc:description><dc:description>George J. Berry was born in Blairsville, Georgia on July 5, 1937. He attended Young Harris College. Upon discharge from the U.S. Army in 1962, he went to work in the finance department of the city of Atlanta. Berry was chosen to be the deputy chief administrative officer in Mayor Ivan Allen's administration. Mayor Sam Massell promoted him to chief administrative officer during Atlanta's critical transition from primarily white to mixed race leadership. Under Mayor Maynard Jackson, Berry was appointed commissioner of Aviation in 1978. There, he oversaw the development of terminals and runways in the Atlanta Airport. In 1983, Berry became the commissioner of Industry, Trade and Tourism for the state of Georgia. He remained in that position until 1990, when he ran an unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor. He left politics, and became senior vice president of Cousins Properties, Inc., a successful property development firm in Atlanta.</dc:description><dc:description>Finding aid available in repository.</dc:description><dc:description>Related materials available in the following collections of this repository: George J. Carmichael was one of Georgia's most prominent business leaders. During World War II (1941-45) he served as general manager of the mammoth Bell Aircraft plant in Marietta. After the war he built Scripto, Incorporated, into an international leader in writing instruments. He took a one-year leave of absence from Scripto in 1951 to become the first general manager of the Georgia division of Lockheed (later Lockheed Martin). A two-term legislator in the 1930s, Carmichael ran for governor in 1946 as the candidate of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Although he never again ran for elective office, he continued to exercise political power behind the scenes and played a role in building a two-party system in Georgia.</dc:description><dc:format>video/mp4</dc:format><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Reflections on Georgia Politics Oral History Collection</dc:source><dc:source>http://sclfind.libs.uga.edu/sclfind/view?docId=ead/RBRL220ROGP.xml</dc:source><dc:subject>Bell Aircraft Corporation</dc:subject><dc:subject>Governors--Georgia</dc:subject><dc:subject>Elections--Georgia</dc:subject><dc:subject>Elections</dc:subject><dc:subject>Governors</dc:subject><dc:subject>Political participation</dc:subject><dc:subject>Dobbins Air Reserve Base (Ga.)</dc:subject><dc:subject>Marietta (Ga.)--History</dc:subject><dc:subject>Cobb County (Ga.)--History</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia--Cobb County</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia--Dobbins Air Reserve Base</dc:subject><dc:subject>Georgia--Marietta</dc:subject><dc:title>George Berry on James Carmichael, 06 April 2013.</dc:title><dc:type>MovingImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
