Abit Massey is a past Chairman of the Board of the American Society of Association Executives and the Center for Association Leadership and past President of the Georgia Society of Association Executives. Massey has served as the dean of the state's lobbyist corps. He is the former director of the Georgia Department of Commerce, now the Department of Economic Development, where he created the Tourist Division and built the first Georgia Welcome Station. Massey has worked at the Georgia Poultry Federation and served as the President of the UGA Alumni Association.</dc:description><dc:description>Finding aid available in repository.</dc:description><dc:description>Abit Massey discusses his early life in Athens, Georgia. He recalls spending time on the University of Georgia campus, attending the University of Georgia, and attending law school at Emory. Massey discusses the origin of his interest in politics and his experience working for Congressman James C. Davis. Massey recalls his experience working for the Vandiver campaign and with Jim L. Gillis and Ernest Vandiver himself. He discusses his work with the Department of Commerce and his work establishing the first Welcome Station on Highway 301 in 1960. Massey discusses a traffic signal issue in Ludowici, Ga., he resolved before recalling the story of how he met his wife. Massey discusses coming to Gainesville. He comments on his relationship with the Georgia Poultry Federation and discusses his children's careers. Massey comments on the birth of the poultry industry, mentioning the influence of Jesse Jewell and rural electrification. He reflects on poultry trade with Russia and the influence of President Kennedy, Dean Rusk, and D.W. Brooks. Massey discusses the University of Georgia department of poultry science, the college of agriculture, and agricultural engineering. He comments on the importance of the veterinary medicine program at UGA as well. Massey speculates on the outlook of the poultry industry.
