She comments on her artistic ambitions from a young age and describes her education from high school through college. Sanders describes how she met husband Carl Sanders and recalls personal memories about him. Sanders recalls moving to Augusta so Carl Sanders could practice law, the subsequent call for Carl Sanders to run for public office, and the campaign flights around Georgia. Sanders discusses the election day when Carl Sanders was elected for Governor. Sanders recalls the decision to renovate and redecorate the old governor's mansion. She goes on to explain several social events that occurred at the mansion. Sanders further recalls her hand in planning for a new governor's mansion located off West Paces Ferry Road in 1967. Sanders mentions entertaining Robert Kennedy, Robert Goulet, Lady Bird Johnson, Robert Woodruff, Elizabeth Shoumatoff, and studying art with Lamar Dodd. Sanders discusses her childrens' lives, her path to becoming an artist, and her work in creating the first Georgia Council of the Arts. She discusses her love of hats.Betty Bird Foy Sanders was born to a farming family in Statesboro, Georgia, on August 6, 1926. She spent a year at the Georgia Teacher's College, and then earned a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Georgia. She met Carl Sanders at UGA, and they married in 1947. They moved to Augusta, Carl Sanders's hometown, where Carl practiced law. When he entered politics, Betty campaigned with him, and they moved to Atlanta when Carl was elected governor in 1962. As the first lady of Georgia, she raised two children, helped develop the new governor's mansion, and entertained many renowned politicians and business leaders. Sanders made a name for herself in fashion, particularly for her hats. She was a successful artist, painting Georgia's wildflowers. Her art has been shown in various exhibitions throughout Georgia. Sanders also helped to create the first Georgia Council of Arts, which developed fine arts programs and buildings on numerous Georgia campuses and sponsored art scholarships.
