He served in the Georgia Air National Guard from 1966 to 1972, rising to the rank of staff sergeant. He graduated from the University of Georgia, and opened Northside Realty. In 1979, he became president of the company, and led Northside to become the largest real estate company in Georgia. He first ran as a Republican for the Georgia House of Representatives in 1974 but lost that election. Running again in 1976, he won. He served seven terms, the last two as minority leader. He ran for governor in 1990, but lost to Zell Miller. In 1992, Isakson ran for the Georgia Senate and won, serving two terms. In 1996 he ran for Sam Nunn's vacated U.S. Senate seat, but lost in the primary to Guy Millner. In 1998, Congressman and Speaker Newt Gingrich announced his retirement, and Isakson entered a special election in February. He won and was elected for a full term in 2000 and 2002. In 2003, Senator Zell Miller declared that he would not run for a full term in 2004. Isakson entered the race, winning the endorsement of President George W. Bush and the election, taking his seat in the senate in 2005.In this interview Isakson discusses his career as a Georgia legislator and U.S. Congressman.
