Vandiver.</dc:description><dc:description>Samuel Ernest Vandiver graduated from the University of Georgia in 1940 with a Bachelor of Arts in history and in 1942 with a Bachelor of laws. After graduation, Vandiver enlisted as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force where he served in 1944 and 1945. Vandiver ran unopposed for Mayor of Lavonia, Georgia in 1945 and passed the Georgia Bar in 1946, joining Joseph D. Quillian's law firm in Winder, Georgia. In 1948, Governor Talmadge appointed Vandiver his adjutant general and in 1954, Vandiver was elected lieutenant governor. In 1958, Vandiver was elected Governor, a position he held until 1963. Vandiver ran for Governor again in 1966 but was forced to withdraw from the race due to a heart attack. In 1971, Vandiver served under Governor Jimmy Carter as his adjutant general.
