a ATFA DIRECTORS MEETING - April 15, 1998 The annual meeting of American Turpentine Farmers Association Directors was held on Wednesday. April 15, 1998 at the ATFA Office, McRae, Georgia. The meeting began at 10:30 a.m. with the following Officers, Directors and guest present: Jim L. Gillis, Jr. President Travis P. Cook Vice President Alton Carter Director Jim L. Gillis, III Treasurer Grady Williams Secretary President Gillis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Grady Williams, Secretary, read the minutes from last meeting. There were no additions or corrections and a motion by Director Carter, seconded by Director Cook to approve minutes. The motion was unanimously approved. Jimmy Gillis, Treasurer, presented the following report: $4,245.28 in the checking account and $10,000.00 certificate of deposit in the Bank of Soperton. Mr. Gillis had checks and deposits available for review. President Gillis discussed the status of current ATFA membership. There was no recommendation for change. President Gillis advised the Directors of: the meeting on Naval Stores Research that Dr. Alan Hodges organized at Gainesville, Florida. The ones from our area to attend included President Gillis, Grady Williams, Wesley Hartley and Bill Barrett. Dr. Alan Hodges was unable to attend this meeting in McRae but did send a letter that was read by Grady Williams that included information about his research and the plans he has for the coming year. Dr. Hodges also stated that he will soon be associated with the Naval Stores Review Magazine as Technical Editor on a part time basis. President Gillis indicated his interest in research and he was in hopes that a new gum production practice could be recommended to producers very soon. There was a general discussion among Directors regarding the market situtation of pine gum. Realizing that AKZO-NOBEL, Baxley, Georgia is the only market, it was agreed by all for President Gillis and Grady Williams to meet with the Leadership of AKZO to find out what their future plans are for providing a market for pine gum. Grady Williams presented a copy of the History of Naval Stores entitled, "The Treasures of Longleaf Pines" by Carroll Butler. After a short discussion with favorable comments about the importance of history is to our industry, a motion by Director Cook was made seconded by Director Carter to purchase 10 copies of the publication. The motion passed. President Gillis asked for a motion for nomination of Officers for the next year. There was a motion by Director Cook, seconded by Director Carter for the following Officers: Jim L. Gillis, Jr. President Travis P.
