ATFA DIRECTORS MEETING - FEBRUARY 22, 1996 The Annual Meeting of ATFA Directors was held on Thursday, February 22, 1996, at the Georgia Forestry Commission's District Office, McRae, Georgia. It began at 2:00 P.M. with the following Officers, Directors and guests present: Jim L. Gillis, Jr. President Travis P. Cook Vice President Alton Carter Director Jim L. Gillis, III Member Grady Williams Member President Gillis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the new office of the American Turpentine Farmers Association. President Gillis presented information regarding the situtation of having to re-locate the ATFA office from Valdosta to McRae, Georgia. President Gillis acknowledged appreciation to the Georgia Forestry Commission and to it's Director John Mixon for providing new office space at the Georgia Forestry Commission's McRae District Office. Also, President Gillis expressed appreciation to Grady Williams for transferring ATFA office equipment and records to the new location. President Gillis discussed with the Directors the financial status of the ATFA as of December 12, 1995, the date all records were moved from Valdosta to McRae. Following a discussion, Director Travis Cook made motion to transfer funds in the Valdosta Bank to the Bank of Soperton. Director Alton Carter seconded motion. Everyone voted for approval of the motion. President Gillis advised the Board of Directors that it was time to elect new officers. There was a motion by Director Travis Cook, seconded by Director Alton Carter to elect new Officers as follows with the Board voting with unanimous approval: Jim L. Gillis Jr. President Travis P. Cook Vice President Jim L. Gillis, III. Treasurer Grady Williams Secretary There was a discussion regarding ATFA's renewal registration with the Secretary of State. The Director's suggested that President Gillis check further into this and renew registration if it is in the best interest of the ATFA. President Gillis advised the Board of Directors that Joyce Lamb, Secretary of the Association had discontinued work with the ATFA in December 1995. There was a discussion of how to express appreciation to Mrs. Lamb for her many years of faithful service to ATFA. After expressions commending Mrs. Lamb a motion was made by Director Alton Carter, seconded by Director Travis Cook to present Mrs. Lamb a cash gift in the amount of $500.00 with a note of appreciation from the Association. The Board unanimously approved the motion. Next on the agenda President Gillis asked Grady Williams to give an up- date on Dr. Alan Hodges naval stores research that was conducted in 1995, and also asked what is planned for 1996. Grady Williams presented a summary of the work done in 1995. It involved the bore-hole concept using improved plastic bags and chemical paste application on a plot of timber located on the Dixon Memorial State Forest near Waycross, Georgia. Results of this study showed some increase . in gum yields over previous studies and positive benefits of using plastic bags; however, the system could not be termed successful to the point of introduction to the industry at this particular time. It was announced by Grady Williams that Dr. Alan Hodges is very interested in continuing his research, and with approximately $1,600 remaining in the Georgia Forestry Commission Project Fund, wanted to expand his work in 1996. Grady Williams pledged his support and assistance with the research. President Gillis expressed there was a need to have someone to perform the Secretarial duties of the ATFA and to answer request from producers and others who might contact the ATFA. Upon a motion by Director Travis Cook seconded by Director Alton Carter and unanimously passed by the Board to retain Grady Williams to perform the duties as previously announced, and to compensate him at the rate of $100.00 per month.
