Opening College gets new leadership The Rev. F. Stuart Gulley: 24th president of LaGrange College On July 1, 1996, The Rev. F. Stuart Gulley assumed the helm of LaGrange College as its 24th president when Dr. Walter Y. Murphy retired after 16 years as president of college. Gulley, 35, came to LaGrange from Emory University where he was the associate vice president for university development and church relations. Charles Hudson Sr., who served as co-chair of the search committee for a new president, said Gulley is what LaGrange Colleges needs at this time. "Walter Murphy has brought LaGrange College to a place where it is ready to take off, and Mr. Gulley' s accomplishments in and commitment to church-related higher education make him the perfect person or take the College into the 21st century." Getting to this positionthis place in his life has been the result of Gulley's putting together a number of pieces of his life's puzzle: education, goals and commitment. He comes from a family deeply seeped in the church and higher education. He is the son of a father who is a United Methodist minister and professor church history at Vanderbilt University. Gulley graduated with honors from Vanderbilt in 1983 with a bachelor of arts degree in modern European history. Three years later he earned the master of divinity degree, also with honors, from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He was ordained a United Methodist minister in 1990. Upon graduation from Emory in 1986, Gulley became director of admissions and student placement at Candler School of Theology, where he increased student admissions by 33 percent in a three-year period. In 1 995 he was promoted to the position he held before coming to LaGrange. In that role he was responsible for the development programs of Emory's School of Business, Law Oxford College, Theology and the Carlos Museum. His wife, Kathleen Crenshaw Gulley, also earned a master of divin- ity degree from Emory and was an elementary school teacher in DeKalb County for six years. They have one son, 1 -year-old Andrew Baker Gulley. "LaGrange College is a remarkable institution," Gulley said. "The caliber of the faculty, the quality of the stu- dent body, the excellent health of the school's finances and physical plant and the tremendous love that graduates and trustees have for this institution make LaGrange a treasure among higher education institutions today." His life and art When Lamar Dodd died Sept. 20, 1996 at the age 87, a retrospective of his work was on exhibit at the art center which bears his name. "A Shared Vision: The Life and Art of Lamar Dodd" opened with a recep- tion July 17. The artist himself attended the reception which was held on the night the Olympic torch passed through LaGrange. "I'm so deeply honored that they are having the exhibit. It's like looking at my life history," Dodd said. The opening festivities of the retro- spective art exhibit, held jointly by the Lamar Dodd Art Center and the Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum, in- cluded a premier performance of an original chamber music composition by LaGrange College Callaway Professor of Music and Music Department chair Lee Johnson. The piece, Johnson said, I'm so deeply hon- ored that they are having the exhibit. It's like looking at my life history." Lamar Dodd was inspired by Dodd's life. At the reception, a sculpture created by artist Jack Kehoe was dedicated in Dodd's honor. The exhibit was the first time in 30 years, since Atlanta's High Museum of Art held a retrospective, that so many of Dodd's works had been gathered in one place, John Lawrence, Dodd Art Center Director, said. To display Dodd's art. six themes were selected. Those themes were "Continuity and Change: The Artist as Student,""The South: Homeplaces and People," "People as Landscape: Form and Personality," "Technology and Hu- man Spirit," "Quiet Moments" and "The Elements." Dodd studied architecture at Georgia Tech and also studied with the Art Stu- dents League of New York. He retired in 1 976 as the chair of the fine arts divi- sion and head of the art department at the University of Georgia. Dodd was survived by his wife, Annie Laurie, and his daughter, Irene Dodd of Valdosta. Go Opening ^5-^ Freshmen perspective Incoming students: their thoughts on LaGrange College Who: Nylsa Dunbar Background: Long Island, New York Major: Drama Why did you choose LC?: My parents just relocated to Fayetteville in September. LaGrange College has an excellent theater program and the atmosphere is easy to adjust to. If I need help in any subject I know I can go to any of my teachers for one-on-one help. I didn't want to be a number at a large school Being from New York, I am still not used to Southern hospitality. What one thing would you change about LC?: No 8 a.m. classes. What is your favorite thing about LC?: Not the food. It is not mama's cooking. Who: Stuart Holden Background: Thompson, Georgia Major: Photography Why did you choose LC?: I wanted a small school and LaGrange College was close to home. It just fit. What one thing would you change about LC?: I'd defi- nitely put in more parking. I can't tell you how many times I have been blocked in by someone who has parked illegally. What is your favorite thing about LC?:My friends. Its easy to make friends and you always see your friends every- where like in the dining hall and on the patio. Who: Jennifer Ives Background: Marietta, Pope High School Major: Undecided Why did you choose LC?: A couple of my friends talked to me about coming here and when I took the tour my Hilltopper was very easy to talk to. I immediately felt at home. I never pictured going to a school where when you walk around the campus everybody knows your name and says hey. Even upperclassmen are there to help. What one thing would you change about LC?: Some of the school food. What would you tell a friend thinking about coming to LC?: The school has a lot to offer with friends, majors and sororities. Who: Brad Markham Background: Newnan, Newnan High School Major: Biology What would you tell a friend thinking about coming to LC?: Since LaGrange College is such a small school, it's easy to make new friends. I made new friends really quickly. Classes are small and you get more of a chance to know your professors and talk to them if you are having a problem. What one thing would you change about LC?: I d like to get a better recycling program going. The only recycling bins now are at the end of the hall in the dorms.
