Opening 1

From the day you first
walked across the patio until
the moment you accepted
your diploma, friends sur-
rounded you on the Hill.
With our small student body
it was easy to develop friend -
ships with virtually everyone.
Through these friendships,
you could discover a sense
of security and recognition.

LEFT: Scotty Quinn and Jennifer Twiggs, two Seniors who are
ready to discover the real world. ABOVE RIGHT: New friend-
ships form quickly on lazy autumn afternoons. BELOW RIGHT:
Sandy Henderson, Lori Johnson, and Mary Vaughan fraterni-
ties and friendships go hand in hand.

4 Opening

One of the first things you
discovered on the Hill was
the fact that laughter was es-
sential to collegiate survival.
In the cafeteria, in the park-
ing lot, or during that 8 AM
lecture, a sense of humor
was often necessary. What
better lesson could we have
learned than to laugh at life
and at ourselves?

College is the opportune
time to discover new ideas,
new interests, and new iden-
tities. On the Hill, the vast
array of academic and extra-
curricular organizations
combined with an undeni-
ably energetic atmosphere
gave us all the opportunity
to discover our full poten-
tial.

LEFT: Freshman Wanda Ellison tries archery for the first time.
ABOVE RIGHT: Exchange students often take advantage of the
opportunity to establish lasting friendships here in America.
BELOW RIGHT: Intramural sports, such as fall football, provide
the opportunity for anyone to be involved in athletics.

Through the friendships,
the laughter, and the oppor-
tunities, we were able to
make the most important
discovery of all ourselves.
What we learned in the class-
room was invaluable, but
what we learned from each
other was irreplaceable.

LEFT: Annette Robertson and John Herren smile for the camera.
(Now isn't that special?) ABOVE RIGHT: Mark Mollnar, Henry
Harbin, David McKoy, and Rip Bloodworth Hangin' Loose.
BELOW RIGHT: Tim Ellis displays one of his many talents as
the LC Panther.

SMITH
HALL

This past summer renovation of historic
Smith Hall began. Constructed in 1842 of brick
which was hand formed of native clay, Smith
Hall is the oldest building on the campus. It is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places
as one of the oldest brick buildings in this region
and as one of the oldest private college buildings
in Georgia.

The cost will be just over $2 million and
completion of the project is expected to take
one and a half years. Funds for the project were
made possible by a matching grant of $1 million
from the Callaway Foundation and from support
of various alumni and friends of the College.

In the renovation, the columns, affectionately
known to students through the years as "Mat-
thew, Mark, Luke, and John," will not be dis-
turbed. The existing exterior brickwork will be
restored and the roof will be replaced. A new
three-story stair tower will be added between the
rear wings of the building.

10 Smith Hall

New air conditioning and heating
systems, new wiring and plumbing will
be installed. An elevator will be added
and the building will equipped with
modern fire protection systems. Space
will be provided for several administra-
tive offices, and the Business and Com-
puter Science Departments. The cam-
pus bookstore and a faculty lounge, as
well as offices for the campus mainte-
nance crew will be located on the low-
er level.

PEOPLE

People you can't have a college without
them. Each and every person at LaGrange Col-
lege is much more than just a student or teacher.
He is an unique individual, possessing talents
and insights that belong to
only him, that when shared
with others on campus add a
new dimension to our "com-
munity." From Seniors to
Freshmen, Faculty members
to Night Students, every per-
son has something to offer.
At a college as small as La-
Grange, each individual is
needed to help our school
grow and continue to be the
fine Southern institution it is.

This year, like every other,
we've tried to discover the
names and faces of every per-
son at LC. But not just the
faces we've tried to capture
the personalities behind those
faces. For the separate person-
alities combine together to
form the personality of the
college, one that is unique to
LaGrange College and its
people.

President Walter Murphy and Dr. Waights Henry

There is no relationship in all the world quiet like the
relationship between a student and his alma mater. It has many
dimensions! College means good professors (and perhaps
some that you don't remember quite so well.) It means long
hours of cramming for exams, agonizing over papers. It means
the exhilaration of taking part in an intramural team. It means
fraternity and sorority service opportunities, home on week-
ends, and a job to work your way through. It means taking
part in a Christian fellowship group, making a lot of big
decisions about your major, your career, and maybe even a life
mate. College means the formation of lasting friendships that
will continue long after college days are over. The wonderful
thing about it all is that all of these meanings of your college
experience tend to grow more and more valuable and mean-
ingful as time passes. You cherish them more with a passing of
each year.

Likewise, LaGrange College is a richer and better campus
for your having added so much to the LaGrange experience.
Thank you, also, for adding immeasurably to my life because
of your years on the Hill and our chance to be together.

v-

Walter Y. Murphy

The purpose of higher education is to enable persons to
understand themselves and their fellows, to comprehend that
world, and to prepare themselves so they may accomplish
satisfying personal goals and make a contribution to society
commensurate with their abilities. This requires a campus
atmosphere conducive to study, learning, inquiry, vocalization
and expression of thought, and such actions as are appropriate
to the academic process.

Under the direction of President Walter Y. Murphy and a
superb administration and faculty, a dedicated Board of Trust-
ees, and a very loyal alumni, LaGrange College has become
one of the finest independent liberal arts colleges in the South-
east. We are proud to be associated with such a fine institu-
tion.

Dr. Wa&ghts G. Henry, C?r . , Chancellor

Deans Charlie Lincoln, Frank James, and Nancy Alford

I just wanted you students to know that you
are. right now, living in the greatest years of your
lives. Friendships are growing, romances are
budding, careers are opening up, and you are
molding your future years. What decisions you
make now, will plot most of your directions for
many years to come.

My Challenge to all of you is to always look
for the silver lining even when the clouds look
their darkest. Positive reactions to everyday oc-
cunances tend to make the days go by much
better for all of us. Even if you feel you have
been run over by someone or something, get up.
brush the cinders from your knees, smile, and
keep your thoughts on your highest goals.

Your friends, goals and aspirations made here
at LC, along with the best education provided by
some of the best educators available, will follow
you throughout your lives, and you will be a
richer person because of the efforts.

Charlie Lincoln
Associate Dean

I was asked to write a "personal statement to
the student body.'' I find that difficult to do
because this student body is diverse. You are the
engineer enrolled in the MBA program, the mid-
life mother seeking a nursing degree, the Milli-
ken dyer and finisher talcing chemistry courses,
the student minister juggling a church and NE-
VIIM, and, of course, the traditional residential
and, arguable, more worry-free student. Perhaps
that is the point. You enrich LaGrange College
with your differences. I am uncomfortable and
worry when you have problems; I rejoice when
you are happy. When you leave LaGrange, de-
gree in hand, sometimes there is that bittersweet
feeling, at other times, a sigh of relief. I am
amazed at how callously indifferent you are to
the human needs around you, yet am humbled
and embarrassed at times by your doing more
and caring more than I. You are a paradox, a
conundrum, an enigma, a worry and a delight.

Permit me to add one more cliche get to
know yourself. You'll be better for it.

Dean of the- College

DISCOVER IT . . . WHAT A GREAT CHAL-
LENGE!

Freshmen, I dare you to discover your SEL-
F your best self, the self you really want to be.
Now is the time to discover who you are. For
you sophomores, discovery and understanding
of others should be a daily quest. If you learn to
relate well to other people your life will be great-
ly enriched. Juniors, discover "THE HILL".
Higher elevations allow for expanded vision;
take in the panorama before you. You are invest-
ing your time and effort here so take advantage
of every opportunity. And lastly, to the seniors I
challenge you to discover the world. You are
now on the threshold of all you have studied and
worKed toward GO FOR IT! Use your energy
and talents to achieve your goals and dreams.

DR. DON JOLLY

The l l )HK Graduating Class of LaGrange College proudly dedi-
cate this year's edition of the Quadrangle to Dr. Richard Donald
Jolly. Dr. Jolly is professor of mathematics and chairman of the
Division of Science and Mathematics.

A native of Meridian, Miss., Dr. Jolly has been a member of the
LaGrange College faculty since 1961. He received his bachelor of
science decree in mathematics from the University of Southern
Mississippi; his master's degree from the U. of Illinois; and his
doctoral degree in mathematics education from Auburn.

Dr. Jolly is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R.I. Jolly of Meridan,
Mississippi. He is married to the former Roberta J. Anderson (LC
classes of HO and '81) and they have three children Mrs. Debbie
Mills, Ricky and Kevin Jolly, all graduates of LaGrange College.

For many years, Dr. Jolly has been one of the most loved and
respected professors on campus. New students are always advised to
take his Math classes because he is such a good teacher and caring
person. His Christian attitude and love is evident both in and out of
the classroom. To all of us here on the Hill, Dr. Jolly is a very special
person

STUDENT LIFE

Student Life . . . the words practi-
cally say it all. The life of a college
students is like no other full of
classes, meetings, par-
ties, and very special
freedoms that will one
day seem like a dream.

However, the life of
a student here on the
Hill is very unique in
itself. Who else but an
LC Coed can wake up
five minutes before
class and still make it
on time, burn their
clothes in the dryer, fall
up a hill on a Friday

As We

Life on the Hill at LaGrange
College was a life of studies, du-
ties and responsibilities. Some-
times it was hard for us to re-
member that we were here for an
education, not necessarily for a
good time. But there were cer-
tain things that always kept us
on task, including parking tick-
ets, cafeteria food, burnt laundry
and construction workers who
tried to look up our skirts as we
walked down the fire escape.
This wasn't the way we wanted
things to be, but this was life on
the Hill as we knew it.

Life on The Hill ... As We

An education was not all that
we gained at La Grange College.
We also collected true friend-
ships, cherished memories, and
an all -important feeling of ac-
ceptance. Through fraternities,
sororities, dances and parties,
skip days and snow days, we
somehow managed to enjoy
ourselves without flunking out
of school.

the first Monday evening of Fall

chance to check into the various
extracurricular activities offered by
LaGrange College. All students
were given an opportunity to be-
come involved and sign up for
campus activities. The fair also
gave new and returning students a
chance to get acquainted or reac-

break. Besides the organization
booths, there were refreshments
and entertainment by the drill
team, the cheerleaders, and a local
band. It was an enjoyable as well as

AFTER "THE RUSH"

The Confusion Is Over

The "Rush Process" began the moment the first
new student walked on campus that first Saturday.
Though the actual formal Rush parties are very
different for the guys and girls, the end result is the
same an invitation to join one of the exciting
Greek groups on campus.

For the men, the Rush process was fairly simple.
Socializing with the fraternity brothers on campus
and at the houses was the biggest part. Once the
guys got to know people during that first week,
they began to know whete they wanted to belong.
The second week, each fraternity hosted a dinner
for the rushees as a way of formally presenting
themselves. On Friday night, the fraternities had
their Pref Parties. Each party had a theme the
Delts had their "Shipwreck Party" and the Pi
Kapps, their "Safari Party." The Kappa Sigs had a
new theme "Lady and the Tramp." The next day
was the big one BID DAY! At 6pm, the rushees
received their bids; an hour later, they hurried
down the Hill to their new "home away from
home", accepting their bids and beginning a new

life of brotherhood.

With the ladies, the Rush process was a bit more
complicated. Along with long list of Rush Do's
and Don'ts (more commonly known as Infrac-
tions), there was an even longer week of parties the
third week of school. After many long talks and
many more tears, the decisions were made and the
bids accepted. The week ended that Sunday with
each sorority pledging right at quota and a Panhel-
lenic sing on the Soccer Field.

Congratulations to all the Greeks, both old and
new!!

And Decisions Are
Made

their pledge retreat. 5. Following in the footstpes of
her longtime friend Laura Hester, Heather Gilbert

Sigma pledge Charlie Wade and Delt pledge David
Fuller play convicts in the Man Who Came to Din-
ner". 7. David McCabe and Steve Schug are very
proud to be Pi Kapp pledges. 8. AOTT pledges Gail
Knight, Angie Stephens, Amy Carter, and Jennv

Hill. 9. Delt pledges show off their musical talents on
a rockin' Friday night at the house.

Kappa Sigma's annual Toga Party
was held on October 24, 1987. The event
was open to all students sheets mada-
tory. The basic white toga was out it
was the year to be creative (tied -dyed
togas, togas with prints, and spray -paint-
ed togas)! Question of the evening: "So,
what's under the toga?"

1. Stacey Graddy and Kristi Young "Color-
ful" Togas! 2. Mike Dombrosky Opera, this is
not. 3- Chris King When in Rome . . . Party! 4.

Pi Kappa Phi held its Punk Rock
Party on October 31. 19H7. The annual
event was attended by brothers, pledges,
little sisters, alumni, and invited guests.
The partiers were dressed in a fashion
that even a mother would hate. Anarchy
was the rage conformity was prohibit-
ed. It was a Halloween bash to be re-
membered.

Spirit Week was an exciting
time for everyone. Sunday start-

in the cafeteria for a study break.
On Monday, SGA held a "Hill
Run" a two lap race around
campus. T-shirts were given to
those who entered, and trophies
were awarded to the winners.
Tuesday was "Progressive Mov-

shown in each dorm.

The most exciting event was
the Lip Sync contest Thursday
night. Rip Bloodworth, Terry

Fall Intramurals

Volleyball

Fall Intramurals for the ladies, as always, was volleyball. These were
teams from each sorority and two teams of Independents. The K-Dee's,
Phi mu's, AOPi's, and Indies all had a great time competing against one
another and improving their "volleyball skills." For the final game, it was
Phi Mu 1 against AOTT 1. After several exhausting and exciting rounds,
AOTT 1 came out on top and won the championship for the 1987 season.

Football

The guys fought it out on the football field, taking it all very seriously. The
Kappa Sigs, Delts, Indies, and Pi Kapps all were determined to win the
championship. The final game was played by the Pi Kapps and Indies
with almost everyone expecting the Indies to win as they had done all
season long. But he Pi Kapps were determined to be "number one". In
the end the Pi Kapps beat the Indies for the first time all season, winning
the Championship by a score of 7-6.

True talent came to the LaGrange College campus in October
when the Department of Speech Communications and Theatre
presented The Man Who Came to Dinner. This satiric comedy fea-
tured professional actor Wayne Ballantyne and gave many students
a chance to display their polished acting skills, since it had one of
the largest casts in school history. The production staff, led by Ed
Bowen and Joel Williams, also helped to make the play a remark-
able success. The play ran during homecoming weekend and was
enjoyed by students and faculty as well as alumni and members of
the LaGrange community.

Snow Days '88

On January 7th, the student
body awoke to a blanket of snow
and ice. Classes were cancelled
Thursday and Friday. The faculty
and students both enjoyed a long,
leisurely weekend.

Some dormitory students
amused themselves with sleding.
Others chose more quiet activities,
such as watching movies or just
socializing. Whatever everyone
did, the snow days were a relaxing
break from LCs daily routine.

This year's May Day festivities were different in sever-

Because of the Smith Hall construction, the picnic lunch
was moved to Sunny Grables' lawn and the Step Singing

Dodd Art Center. A large crowd of parents and guests
joined the students for the May 7th tradition. Unlike the
year before Step Singing was simply an entertaining

ORGANIZATIONS

LaGrange College has a wide variety of organizations,
offering something for every student. The Student Gov-
ernment Association heads these groups, ranging from
sororities and fraternities, religious and honorary organi-
zations to service clubs and student publications. This
school year saw some good
changes in our organizations, espe-
cially within the SGA and the
Greek system. For the first time,
LaGrange College had a Student
Government Senate with elected
representatives from each class and
off -campus students. The Senators
worked closely with the SGA offi-
cers in planning events for the
whole student body. Panhellenic
and Intrafraternal relations were
better than ever. This was obvious
during Rush when the number of
pledges for each group was almost
equal. The harmony continued
throughout the year, bringing a
long -sought peace to our campus.
Thanks to this peace, we discov-
ered that even though we may all
not belong to the same organiza-
tions, it is wonderful for everyone
at LaGrange to be friends.

With the introduction of a
new constitution came the
beginnings of a new institu-

the Student Government As-

made up of students who
were elected by class or hous-

worked hard and represented
the student body well. Com-

The Kappa Sigma fraternity had a very busy year. The
fraternity raised $1200.00 for their philanthropy, which is the
Heart Fund. Fall and Spring Quarters, the fraternity sponsored
exam boxes which were sent to students by their parents to
help them make it through exam time. Winter quarter, Kappa
Sigma received the scholarship award for having the highest
GPA among the fraternities. During Homecoming, the frater-
nity was awarded third place for their float. The Kappa Omi-
cron chapter also received a scholarship certificate from the
national office during their leadership conference. Chris King
was named MVP for basketball in B league. Jim Stewart was
named an All -Star in intramural basketball; Bobby Frady was
named an All-Star in intramural football. Rob Grant, presi-
dent, says happily, "We have the best lawn of all the fraterni-
ties, and we are very proud of that!" Another project that the
fraternity is proud of is its involvement with the other fraterni-
ties in building a fence around the houses to improve relations
with the community.

The pictures on these pages capture the close-knit nature of Life on the Hill. Here at LaGrange College you
know everyone and everyone knows you. It is this bond that gives LC students the feeling of family away from
home. There is always someone around to talk to, watch T.V. with, or even help do your laundry. It is often
said that you can't do anything on the Hill without everyone knowing about it twenty minutes later.
Sometimes that can be irritating,
but when you are in trouble, it is
never long before someone is there
by your side. That's the magic of
our Hill.

The student body consists of
people from all different back-
grounds, making group of colle-
giates as diverse as any you might
find on the Hill, everyone seems to
have a feeling of being at a home
away from home. It is this special
feeling that gives our LC its ambi-
ence and charm.

The Editor's Page . . .

That's me not a pretty picture, I know, but I'm sure that's how
I looked most of the time this year tired, unkempt, confused,
stressed out . . . funny, that's how I felt too. Well, I'll tell you, this
yearbook thing can almost kill you, make you do crazy stuff. But, in
the end, its all worth the effort. Really I'm being serious . . .

Hard work, endless hours, little or no respect, lack of personal life, and
complete sense of being totally overwhelmed by responsibility CAN be totally
rewarding. A truly great experience, being editor of this yearbook, but one I
choose not to repeat and am glad is over. (Thank God for miracles, large and
small!)

Any volunteers for next year?

There are many people I need to give a heartfelt thanks; the
list is long so let me begin before I run out of space: Everyone
on Staff, who put in a great deal of time and effort; all the
photographers, who I never stopped nagging and did an excel-
lent job; Mrs. Julia Dyar, who came to my rescue with VERY
important photographs on numerous occasions; Dean Alford,
the yearbook advisor; Mrs. Calhoun, for typing and conveying
lots of messages for me; Dean Lincoln and the IFC, for being
there every time I was supposed to take their picture, including the time I actually showed up; Dr. Cafaro and Dr. Anderson
they listened to me gripe, rant, and rave every time something went wrong, which I promise was a lot of listening; Dr. Tony
Valle, for printing the list for the directory; my neighbor, Stacey Graddy, for patiently watching me go berserk on many
occasions; my dear roommate Missy Estes, who somehow managed to tolerate me for a whole year; and to the LC student body
for cooperating every time I said, "Smile! This is for the yearbook!"

Also, thanks to those of you who donated pictures. You'll get them back real soon, I promise! And to those of you who en-
couraged me throughout the year, it really meant a lot without you, I would have given it up long ago.

P. S. It's "Dyne", not "Dean".
