College oO C! 5-1 o id Smith Hall College Smith Building is the most histor- ic building on the LaGrange Col- lege campus. The main portion of this building was erected in 1842. An addition was constructed in 1887. The four columns have for several generations been called with whimsical affection, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These mounds were formed by hand and slowly placed in position, forming the graceful brick work of the "College Home." This graceful piece of architecture is one of the few reminders of the old south left standing by the Union troops. Through fires, floods and wars it has stood showing the grace and charm of a true southerner, remaining strong long after those who built it are gone, providing warmth and shelter for all those who wish to enter. We are like this landmark, newly formed and settling down in our environment. LaGrange College has taken our mounds of ability, and each professor has molded them into solid bricks of knowledge. As students, we have used our ef- forts to bond these hand-formed mounds of knowledge together, protecting us from any external event that should come : our way. Let us hope we can still resemble this hall of knowledge in the years to come. Let us hope we can rise to meet any adver- saries that happen our way and remain strong showing the gracefulness and charm of the old south while making a lasting mark in history, providing our descendants with a legacy of greatness and an image of the new south. She has many fond memorie: of this time and kindly recalls them for the anniversary of Hawkes. When Mrs. Moore attended LC, the students were brought to LaGrange train. Mrs. Moore's luggage w taken to the train by an ox named Buck./When she arrived on campus, she soon met the 100 or so students quickly settled in her room. |hHT- ' - ' .. At mealtime, she would eat in Smith at a table of ten or more with a teacher at the head serving the meal. Each of the girls had to bring her own napkin and napkin holder, and there was a table where / fftTy French could be spo- ken, Before the meal was served, everyone would gather by the piano and sing; if you weren Vajgthese meals, peo would come and find you. ; ^ " N \ . ;>** * %# * ? Her description of the campus was also quite different. Our new five-story dorm was then a pasture; our sturfei center has replaced the Dobbs building; Manget and Pitts were not around either. In fact, the only buildings sti here today are Smith and Hawkes,^ The city of LaGrange was also quite different. There were few businesses, and all of these were on what we%no5 today as "the square." There were two hotels. One of these was owned by the parents of Hawkes' present dorm mother, Evelyn Brannon. She remembers that Smith Drugs was where everyone gathered. Because there were few cars, phones or radios, most of the students had no outside interest. These studentship If love for one another, and she hopes that this hasn't changed. * 0^S^Mm,.^^Km^' l ^iS^^M f w ' i mBpM 16/Hawkes Girls of Hawkes a a a s? I Quadrangle Dedication It is with great pleasure that the 1986 Quadran- gle Staff and Senior Class dedicate the 1986 Quad- rangle to Mrs. Martha M. Estes. Mrs. Estes has been a resident of LaGrange since 1962. She not only touches the college with her noble efforts but the community as well. Besides being the Musical Director of the LaGrange Department of Speech Communications and Theatre, assistant professor of Music, and choral director, she also serves as organist for the Ida Cason Callaway Gardens Chapel, Pine Mountain. She received a bachelor of Music degree from Greensboro (N.C.) College, and a master of arts from Columbia University in New York. She has also done graduate work at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. Mrs. Estes al- ways has a smile on her face, and a kind word to say to every faculty member and student. Young is the script writer for the comic strip "Blondie". Chic Young started writing the strip in the 1 930's. With his death in 1973, his son Dean Young inherited the strip and has been writing the script ever since. Currently the comic strip is published in over 2,000 newspapers. Young stated that when returning to LaGrange, he "had fond memories. It was like coming home in a different way." He also said that "it was a fun experience." Dean Young learned of LaGrange College through friends who had attended the college. He visited LC and later decid- ed that this was the place for him. He liked the atmosphere that he saw. He stated "that everybody knew everybody else." He went on to say, "other colleges and universities don't have this." This was one of the determining factors that brought Dean Young to LaGrange College. While here at LaGrange, he did not major in art. He received a degree in business administration. He has fond memories of Dr. Zachary Taylor, who "guided me in my academia." After graduating from LaGrange, Dean Young did not plan on working on his father's comic strip. Young first went to work for an advertising agency. Eventually, he wanted to own his own advertising agency. About two years after gradu- ation, he started working for his father, and in 1973 he inher- ited the comic strip. He has worked on the Blondie comic strip for 23 years. Dean Young has "the hill in his heart." He remembers all of the good times that he had here on campus. He stated that "he could see the improvements, spectacular new buildings, but it is pretty much the way it was." LC At his 25th class reunion, Dean Young (far right) is welcomed back to LaGrange College. Standing with him in front of the "Blondie" comic strip exhibit in the Lamar Dodd Art Center are, left to right.
