SAMUEL G. HORNSBY, JR. Dr. Hornsby began teaching at LaGrange College in 1966, and since then he has worked diligently to make significant con- tributions to his profession. He is presently the Chairman of the Department of English and Division of Humanities. Dr. Hornsby received his Bachelor's of Science in Education and Master's of Arts from the University of Geor- gia. He then earned his Ph.D. from Auburn University. Dr. Hornsby is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, and twice recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Above all, he is 41 and still has most of his hair, which means, "that 1 still love the way 1 make a living." 4 /Opening As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Opening! 5 Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. 6 1 Opening If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser per- sons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing for- tunes of time. Exercise caution in your business af- fairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. 10 1 'Opening Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. 12 1 Opening Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imagin- ings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Opening/ 13 You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. In- volvement on the Hill is stimulated by friendships, religious organiza- tions, sports, academics, and the Greek life. With the aid of these welcomed additions, the team was able to perform more dynamic and challenging stunts and cheers. Part of their training came from at- tending a summer camp in August. This year's squad provided the catalyst for student involvement and en- thusiasm during home Basketball games, and good moral support and encouragement to the Basketball team at away games. 128 /Cheerleaders Loretta Ferrell Angela Parmer Tracy Jackson Sam Touchstone Lisa Ragsdale Tara Tyler Melanie Wright Cheerleaders/ 129 La Grange College Drill Team Sitting: Joann Dillard and Dayna McKay; Kneeling: Melanie Miller, Carol Armstrong, Sandy Johnson, Melissa Sessions, Laura Gomez, and Dana Hall; Standing: Cathy Cooper, Kim Nichols, Melanie Faith, Beth Steel, Shirley Smith, and Lisa Ellenburg. The 1983 LaGrange College Drill Team captured the spot light of halftime festivities at most of the home Basketball games. With much creativity and enthusiasm, they went to extremes to provide memorable routines, including a Valentine's Day special!! Under the leader- ship of Coach Hugh Corless, the Panthers tied with North Georgia College for the championship of the GJAC. The LC Panthers ended their season with an overall record of 18- 7 and a conference record of 12-2. Sam Cotton, Mitch Hanson, and Jerome (Rock) Woodyard served as tri-captains for the 1982-83 season. 132/ Basketball Basketball/ 133 The Panthers not only excelled as a team this year, but they also man- aged to excel individually. Jeff Cot- ton was named to the 1982-83 NAIA All-America second team and was named College Basketball Player of the Month for Small Col- leges. Ken Alexander was named NAIA District 25 Player of the Week and recipient of the Al Mar- iotti 110% Award. Coach Hugh Corless was named 1983 Coach of the Year by the GIAC and NAIA District 25 divisions. It is evident that the mighty Panthers of La- Grange College have a lot of pride for their school and sport. Let's keep the spirit alive and go all the way next year!! Basketball/ 135 236 /Basketball Basketball/ 137 Women s Volleyball Kneeling: Jamie McCann, Pam Sharman, Gerri Wright, Tara Tyler, and Andrea Funk. Standing: Melody Jackson, Lisa Ballew, Ronda Holloway, Katherine Keith, Coach Jan Hogan, Andree Robinson, Connie Martin, Rene Eller, and Dianna Trieglaff. Jan Hogan, women's athletic coach, stepped into the 1982 varsity volleyball season with strong deter- mination and enthusiasm. This be- ing the second year for varsity vol- leyball and only four players re- turning, Coach Hogan endeavored to lay the foundation for building a good program through fundamen- tals, abilities, and experience on the court. Although the team faced strong opposition throughout the season, they played excellent ball. They finished the season with three wins and eleven losses; however, they placed fourth in the District 25 Tournament. The leading scorers for the Lady Panthers were Jamie McCann (91) and Lisa Ballew (90). 138 1 Volleyball In regular season play, LC defeated Oglethorpe Uni- versity two out of three matches, Spelman one out of two matches, but fell to Mercer of Atlanta, West Georgia, Augusta College, and North Georgia College. The women's varsity volleyball team has a bright and successful future ahead of them. They are no longer "new" to the collegiate circuit and should be bringing home the District title very soon. Volleyball 1139 1982-83 Mens Soccer I Kneeling: Lee Washam, Stu Marshall, Tony Evans, Il-Sung Chi, Ibrahim Warrayat, Masato Nagai. Standing: Coach Craig (Foot) Deloach, Joel Loveless, Mark Grantham, Phil Dodson, Scott Dezell, Baron Browning, Cary McCallum, Robie Pitts, and Mark White. The 1982 men's varsity soccer team, in its second year of collegiate competition, worked hard to im- prove their playing abilities through drills and game experience. The sea- son did not prove to be a statistical success, but it did shed light on areas of improvement that will lead to championships in the future. Craig DeLoach has begun an encouraging program for LC. He has chosen to pursue his graduate work at La- Grange while coaching the soccer team. As a former graduate ofLC, it is obvious that he is very interested in the athletic program, and willing to help it grow. 140/Soccer MM LaGrange Georgia College 8 LaGrange Mercer Atlanta 8 LaGrange North Georgia 5 LaGrange Ogelthorpe 6 LaGrange 2 Birmingham So. 5 LaGrange North Georgia 7 LaGrange Columbus College 8 LaGrange 5 Georgia SW 7 LaGrange Georgia College 2 LaGrange 3 Columbus College 8 LaGrange 2 Georgia SW 1 Soccer / 141 Women s Tennis An Almost Season . . . The pressures and frus- trations of deadlines, photo sessions, scheduling, and lay- out design tend to take the glamour out of any publica- tion; however, the end result is always worth the time and effort. This year's book is intended to help you reflect and reminisce the feelings, thoughts, and events of 1983. Hopefully, you will enjoy reviewing its pages for years to come. Yearbook publishing is not intended to be a one-man- job, and I am thankful for the many people who contrib- uted their time and energy to make 1983 a successful year for the Quadrangle. It is my hope that a new burst of enthusiasm has been sparked and greater pride taken in putting together a yearbook. Now that I look back at the year gone by, I can only smile at my successes and failures. I hope that you, too, can find at least one picture or word to smile about.
