Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2014 https://archive.org/details/quadrangle1979lagr_0 LaGrange College Life LaGrange! Greetings! Here we are at LaGrange College. The first person you meet is smiling Roddie deMaflinger, in charge of admissions. Everyone asks him, "Roddie, why do you spell your last name with a small 'd'?" He just smiles. He's a nice guy. He takes you to see Miss Merry Marie. Be nice to her. She hands out money to pay for your higher education. Now, you register for classes. Your first step is to fill out a blue, pink, and yellow copy of the financial aid form. Throw away two of the copies, then move to the next table. Give the person seated there the third copy (you didn't throw it away, did you?), and say goodbye to your hard earned money. Oh well, easy come . . . Move on to the first week of classes time to meet people, and if you want to, study. A People Set Apart Meet Mike O. Blivion, freshman pledge to I Phelta Thi. He goes to frat parties, drinks, meets girls there who drink, and gets back to the dorm very late. He also regularly misses his eight o'clock class. He says his alarm clock is broken. Ah, and here's Joe N. Dee. He sometimes says that fraternities are for the pseudo-elitist spawn of a capitalist-oriented demagogery. Usually he just says that they're for jerks. Sitting next to him is Karen Hermaskovich. Karen collects Milton memorabilia and quotes the Koran. She has a hard time getting dates. Outside the student center is a crowd of guys. No wonder, look who's in the middle of the crowd. It's Ima Thi, known affectionately as being "up front" which is where her main assets are. When not surrounded by a crowd of guys, she may frequently be seen on the porch swing on the back side of the Smith building with her latest victim . . . er . . . boyfriend. People. . . Meeting People Hermy Firnburger is a junior. He transferred to LaGrange from Old Harris College. People don't understand when he asks intelligent questions in class like, "May I ask a question, sir?" He also has a bad habit of getting lost in the bookstore. Oh, there's Gilda Dif. No one quite seems to know anything about her, but then, no one seems to want to, either. Well, that takes care of about 5% of our students. Those are the ones who make things interesting, or, at least entertaining. The rest of the students are just plain folks, cruising through life or whatever it takes to survive. They cram for tests, sleep late on Saturdays to catch up from cramming for tests, and watch the other 5% do the strange things they do to get their names in obscure college yearbooks like this one. shoot it w serve it ^ pass it A* belt it t splash K whack it .' slap it dunk it w bounce it freeze it spin it W cream it chop it $ wet it t dribble it lob it - hit it ace it m loft it * hang it j? clobber it bang it # center it spike it # kill it smash it m hook it w boot it i?# buy it f Seamco SEAMCO SPORTING GOODS COMPANY, DIVISION OF DART INDUSTRIES, LAGRANGE, GEORGIA 30240 FOR MORE INFORMATION, CALL 1-800-241-2301 TOLL FREE. The $2 million dramatic arts building, which opened in the fall of 1975, has a 280-seat auditorium with conti- nental seating and utilizes the latest acoustical concepts. The 2,898-square-foot stage can be used as a conventional stage or converted into a thrust stage by an hydraulic lift. When the lift is down, it forms an orchestra pit. The projection room contains sophisticated sound and light- ing systems costing a quarter of a million dollars. Named for the late Lewis Price of LaGrange, a long-time member of the La- Grange College Board of Trus- tees, the theater and five-acre tract on which it is built was a gift of the Callaway Foundation, Inc. of LaGrange. Features / 79 80 / Features Freshman Girls include Hawkes as part of Campus Life Students find Modern Facilities Aid to Learning Features / 83 mith Reflects College's Past Smith Building is the oldest building on the LaGrange College campus. The main portion of this historic building was con- structed in 1842 of handmade brick formed from native clay. An addition was built in 1887. The structure was named for Oreon Smith, wife of President Rufus W. Smith (1885-1915). LaGrange College is a Methodist affiliated institution, and for several genera- tions the four columns of Smith Hall have been called with whim- sical affection: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The window panes in Smith were from hand-poured glass, and provided a unique service which their manufacturers did not imagine. Young women often etched the initials of their sweethearts in the glass panes. Evidence of the etchings date back to November 30, 1893. Beauty Shown Through History The Chapel is one of the more contemporary yet historic structures on campus. A gift of the Callaway Foundation, Inc. of LaGrange, it was built in 1965, but includes materials linking it to the origins of Christian worship. Bricks and windows used in the chapel are from the former sanctuary of The First Methodist Church of LaGrange built in 1898, including two beautiful cathedral windows made of stained glass in Belgium more than 100 years ago. Three significant stones have been mounted in the building. A stone from the Temple of Apollo at Corinth, Greece, is embedded in the north side of the chapel. The temple was erected around 540 B.C. and St. Paul preached nearby in the market place around 50 A.D., founding the church to which his Epistles to the Corinthians were addressed. On the chapel's east side is a stone from the Benedictine Monastery on the lona Island of Scotland. Christian worship began there in 563 A.D. and the monastery dates back to the 13th Century. A stone from St. George's Chapel, Windsor, England, is in the south side of the building. The cupola (belfry) atop the chapel contains both a bell from one of the last steam engines on the Atlanta and West Point Railroad (Southern Railway System). Tulane Univer- sity Faculty-Administration 207 This is the closing. Rather than risk bold sarcasm or rony, we figured that we'd just come out and say a few things about LC, things you may or may not believe, but you've undoubtedly heard before. Life at LaGrange may not be living it depends on who you are. It is what you make it. LaGrange College has a character, a personality, if you like, which cannot be mistaken or denied. It's character may include apathy, cliques, and low-key living, but that's part of what makes it LC. And what makes LC is you. And you are a product of these times times when apathy and self-interest are common. You are also a product of your time of life, a stage between dependency, freedom, and responsibility. It's the last chance, so it seems, before you have to join the ranks of those who have plodded on before you. So, why not hang on to such a blissful state? How can it be undesirable to want to be self-contended? Well, its not. But there comes a time when you have to reach for something bigger, higher something real, that no one can deny you. When you find that time, its yours. But yours also is the responsibility (yes, there's always a catch) to look outside of yourself and see a world that you have to live in, whether it seems good or bad, rich or poor, real or unreal. And, if you don't like what you see, its your choice whether to do something about it or do nothing and accept things as they are. The sad thing about giving people choices, though, is that they often take the easiest route. Just One More An unexpected guest showed up for the Kappa Delta White Rose Ball held at the Marriott Hotel in Atlanta. He shows his acrobatic ability on the head table of the ballroom after a representative from the group told him, "This is a private party you'll have to leave." * Winston-Salem HUNTER PUBLISHING COMPANY North Carolina James C Hunter, Southeastern District Manager
