LAGRANGE COLLEGE
Lagrange, Georgia

E D I C A T I D N

To the students on the "hill", the fountain is a symbol of the people of
LaGrange. In its tumbling water, we see their overflowing affection; in its
bubbles, their warmth, vitality, and good humor; in its upward surge, their
ambition for us; in its varied displays, the welcome into their churches,
homes, civic organizations, businesses, and hearts; and in its steadfastness,
their loyalty to us. It is to these wonderful people and to the City of LaGrange
itself that we proudly and affectionately dedicate

THE 1953 QUADRANGLE

To Mr. William N. Banks LaGrange College is tremendously indebted.
He is chairman of the Board of Trustees. He is the wise counselor of the Presi-
dent. He is the friend of students. He is a strong benefactor.

The William N. Banks library was named by the Board of Trustees for
the donor. It was his wish to give it a less personal name. Modesty is one of
his character traits. But friends and associates draw inspiration from the
name over the door of the building because of the virtues and qualities of this

O

great Christian gentleman.

PRESIDENT WAIGHTS G. HENRY

A MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS

Seniors of the class of 195 3, we congratulate you upon completion of your liberal
arts course of studies. The emphasis of this issue of "The Quadrangle" upon com-
munity life should serve as a perpetual reminder that your work is not finished.

In a recent address Mr. George S. Johnson, chairman of the city Board of Edu-
cation, referred to the principles involved in the account of Jesus and the Rich
Young Ruler and stated that after all material success is achieved, we are still faced
with the question, "What lack I yet?" There is much yet to be done.

As long as you live you will be faced with your responsibilities to the com-
munity in which you live, though oceans will stand between you and some of your
classmates. If LaGrange College has meant all it should have to you, the stamp of
its spirit will be upon you. You will be a citizen ready to offer leadership in church,
state, and culture because you have been taught how to serve and have been given
opportunity to do so.

As we meet again in your community from time to time, we shall have occasion
to point with pride to you as a former LaGrange student. We have confidence that
we can depend on you. LaGrange College's seal of approval is upon you.

Sincerely,

11

The guiding spirit of any school is found in its administration and
faculty. We are fortunate indeed to have on our campus some of the finest
scholastic spirits. Their enthusiastic approach to learning and their devotion
to the teaching profession will remain a constant inspiration to the students
who have studied under their direction.

ORGAN IZATION

On our campus can be found many varied organizations, representing
almost every interest of the students. Each student has ample opportunity
to become a member of several clubs. Perhaps the organizations provide the
best link between the college and the townspeople, who observe our accom-
plishments through our stage productions, musical programs, and religious
activities.

THE QUADRANGLE MYSTERY

We were walking one day upon the L. C. campus
when we saw two ordinary looking girls strolling along
together. They were ordinary looking at first; however,
one of them soon began to tear at her hair and scream
at the other. "Money! Money!" she cried.

Her companion, who was already half bald-headed,
seemed perfectly unaware of the disturbance but merely
meandered along mumbling, "Forty-one pages gone.
How many ads?" At intervals she laughed insanely.

We were trying to solve the mystery when all at
once a strange girl with a camera in her hand leaped
out from behind a tree and started to snap our picture.
Just as she placed her finger on the shutter, a down-pour
of rain came crashing to the ground. We hurried toward
shelter, but gazing back we saw the figure of the poor
girl tossing about on the ground, tearing at the earth
in agonizing gestures. Completely baffled, we followed
the first two girls into Hawkes Building. Up the steps
they went and into room 203, locking the door behind
them. With the aid of a step ladder we were able to see
through the transom, and there by the light of a SO-watt
bulb, we saw tables, chairs, stacks and stacks of papers,
envelopes, pictures all over the floor, a badly worn type-
writer, and two small windows with padlocks on them.
Then the mystery was cleared up. The two strange girls
were the editor and the business manager of the 1953
Quadrangle, and the girl with the camera why, of
course, the photographic editor. We shook our heads
sympathetically as we looked around the cluttered room
again, and then we quietly left the building because we
understood.

The Quadrangle staff wishes to express its thanks to all those people
who have been helpful, directly or indirectly, in the publishing of the
195 3 Quadrangle: to Miss Kate Howard Cross, the adviser, who was
always willing and glad to help with the proof-reading; to "Fat"
Johnson, the annual photographer, who didn't even let rain stop him
from completing the pictures; to Mr. Johnny Long, who was there with
his much needed assistance; and to Dr. Waights Henry, who furnished
ever present encouragement and inspiration.

The annual staff has, in reality, enjoyed doing its part toward helping
to preserve a few of the highlights and happy moments of our years at
L. C. It is furthermore the wish of the staff that this annual may serve its
purpose to keep those years alive and vivid in the minds of all the
students of LaGrange College.

The Young Women's Christian Association is a religious organization of which
every woman student on the "Hill" is a member. We have a cabinet composed of
seventeen members from the student body and one faculty adviser.

Through the "Y," we try to enrich the spiritual lives of the students on the cam-
pus. Each night we have vespers after supper and meditations from 10:15 to 10:30
in the Little Chapel.

We have adopted a little French girl, Nellie, whom we support. Also we contri-
bute yearly to the World Student Service Fund and CARE. Through these activities,
every student is made aware of the great need in the world.

The choir has given sacred and secular

THE SCROLL

The Scroll is the literary magazine of
the college. Students submit short stories,
essays, poems, and reviews, the best of which
are chosen for publication.

At the end of each year several students,
never more than four in number, are select-
ed to be on the Scroll of Fame. Chosen for
their outstanding contributions, these stu-
dents are honored by having their pictures
framed and hung in the English room.

Even among the constellations of heaven, there are some stars which
shine brighter than others; so it is with any large group of people. Every

TH

DUNSON

LaGrange,

E

MILLS

Georgia

MANY YEARS AGO LaGrange was named by one of her first citizens
"The City of Elms and Roses"; since that time she has also become the
CITY OF COTTON MILLS; and her residents may justly feel a pride
in either name.

THE DUNSON MILLS lie on the eastern edge of the city, between
the Atlanta and West Point Railroad and the Atlanta Highway,
Route 14. Its buildings and grounds are among the most attractive
in the South today. The main building and offices are surrounded
by a wide expanse of velvety lawns, green the year round, and approxi-
mately planted with flowering and evergreen shrubs. The mill building
is of red brick with white trim, and has a base planting of shrubbery.
The tenement village has some three hundred houses of three- and
four-room types, at all times kept freshly painted white, with green
trim. Every home is provided with electric lights and running water
and has ample room surrounding it for flowers and vegetable gardens,
chickens, and a cow if desired. The City of LaGrange now operates
in our village a most modern and commodious Grammar School Build-
ing for the children in our section. The school is equipped with a
splendid kitchen and cafeteria, and has a beautiful auditorium. The
company operates at its own expense a well-equipped kindergarten for
the small children. The company also furnishes a two-story brick build-
ing for use as a meeting place for clubs, lodges, and community
gatherings.

A full-time graduate nurse is regularly employed by the company for
the welfare of its employees and their families, and group life insurance
at a very low rate is provided for all those who wish it.

The company a few years ago built two modern brick churches, one of
Old English and one of Colonial design, and besides furnishing light,
heat and janitor service for the congregations using the building, also
contributes substantially to the support of the resident pastor.

The Dunson Mills extend greetings and good wishes not only to the LaGrange
College Seniors of 1952 but to all girls on the hill.
