These two rival literary associations wore farad early in 1858,
and have already given ;m unmistakable earnest of what tin
destined ultimately to accomplish. It is too much the case, that
literary reading is regarded at of little Importance to the itadeaj
in his scientific researches Reading dosing the prooeasol
lastic traiuing is peculiarly necessary to the acc ompli a hinfBt of
female edueation. With a view to meet these necessities and exi-
gencies, these societies were organized They each have a regular
constitution and code of by-law.-, appropriate officer-, Ac., and
conduct all of their business matters with order and decorum.
They meet for the transaction of business on every Saturday
morning, at which time each member is required, lender pennlty,
to stand up and recite the substance of at least fifty pages of liter-
ature, as the acquisitions of the week. They ore allowed Wednav
day afternoons for reading in their respective halls.

They have already collected a library of books from the
approved authors of ancient and modern times, to the extent of
nearly two thousand volumes. The wise of the country will hail
this as a most valuable auxiliary to female education. The im-
provement which now exhibits it sell in the style of conversation
and writing, on the part of our pupils, sjwaks volumes for the
efficiency of these organizations.
