Owing to the large number and varied attainments of the Musical Faculty, and the still larger number of young ladies in at- tendance, who are perfecting themselves for teachers, together with others who are devoting themselves exclusively to the study of music, the standard of taste and skill among the pupils of the College, is rapidly improved and elevated, and their ambition exci- ted. In addition to these advantages, public lectures will be de- livered, and a variety of concerts given, embracing tho highest range of both secular and acrf. music, with a full and effective orchestra. 4th. The whole business of teaching has been reduced to. a rigidly scientific and philosophical system. All the pupils of the College, whether properly music scholars or not, have daily exer- cises in the theory and practice of vocal music, embracing prelimi- nary exercises in elocution, such as the articulation of consonants, eotirA of tho vowels, and vocal gymnastics. The last exercise named, has been found to produce a surprising and gratifying effect, in strengthening the muscles of the throat and lunge, developing the voice and expanding the chest, thus counteracting the tendency to stoop, in consequence of the crouching position which many young ladies assume at their desks. 5th. Instruction is given in marching to music, in order to secure that most difficult attainment, correct time. In addition to whicl 1 they are thoroughly trained in Calisthenics, for the purpose of imparting that grace and ease of motion and manners so essential in a lady. The great difficulty in maturing and earning out a plan which would secure this object, has been, that fur want of numbers, the tuition money in no one school has been sufficient to pay the salaries of a corps of teachers, lufinently larye, and at the same time possessing the MMMMM attainments. This hereto- fore insurmountable obstacle has now been removed. The La Grange Fkmale College, under the indefatigable and self-sacri- ficing labors of its worthy President, and his co-workers, has ac- quired a reputation and tab. a hold on the public confidence which has secured an abundant supply f material for the full consumma- lion of the plan proposed.
