UBRARY USE ONL/ REESE LIBRARY Augusta College Augusta, Georgia WHAT MAKES A GOOD COLLEGE ooooooooa / Any organization of students and teachers above high school level could be considered a college, but a good college consists of so much more. Depicted here are some of the tangible parts of a good college the activities, the sports, the faculty, the students, and the cam- pus. Only so much can be put in to pictures. The main composition of a good college is the atmosphere, the heart and the soul of the indi- viduals involved in it. It can not be expressed in pictures or in words, only in action. Care about Augusta College, be involved with it. You might luck up and make new friends and perhaps gain a good education along the way. The number of handicapped and disabled students on campus has increased significantly over the past several years. The campus has recently undergone a change in looks by adding handi- capped facilities including wheelchair ramps and the OPIDS office which aids students with hearing apparatus', brail books, tape recordings of books and seeing aids. Students from the OPIDS office also help handicapped students by taking notes for them in class and helping students get from class to class. This dedication is even more fitting since 1982 has been marked as the "year of the handicapped". The handicapped students of Augus- ta College are very special. They are here because they want to learn and to gain a good and useful education. For some students, just reading a book is a very hard task. For all your striving, hardwork and dedication to education, this book is dedicated to you, the handicapped and disabled students of Augusta College. The OPIDS (Office to Promote Independence of Disabled Students) office is open daily. It is located on the ground floor of Bellvue Hall. There is a lift on the right side, facing the building, for wheelchaired students. The office is on the left under the stairwell. All handicapped and disabled students who need learning aids are urged to visit the OPIDS office. The OPIDS personnel are very competent and caring and more than willing to help in any way they can. Young student Orientation Registration ADMINISTftATJiSiN Al PRESIDENT GEORGE A. CHRISTENBERRY George A. Christenberry, President of Augusta College, was born in Macon, Georgia and spent his childhood years in Macon and Greenville, South Carolina. Our President's favorite activity is golf. President Christenberry began his college career at Purman University. His first degree was a B.S. in biology which he obtained in 1936. He continued his education at University of North Carolina with a M.A. in botany (1938) and a Ph.D. in botany (1940). George Christenberry's talent as a leader was soon realized and his working career began as Chairman, Dept. of Biology, at Meredith College from 1940-43. His accomplishments include Professor of Biology, Purman University 1946-53; Dean of the Men's College, Purman Universtiy 1948-53; President, Shorter College 1953-58; Vice-President, Purman University 1958-65; Chairman, Biology Dept., Georgia College 1964-65; Dean, Georgia College 1965-70. In 1970, Augusta College was lucky enough to have George Christenberry nominated and then selected as the President of our College. When President Christenberry was asked about his community, campus services and responsibilities, he stated, "A college president assumes the responsibility of the entire institution. Ultimately the president is responsible, therefore, for all services. In managing the institution, I delegate specific responsibihties to administrative heads. The area of student services is delegated to the Dean of Students Office. He, in turn reports to me. I look to the Dean of Students Office to effectively carry out the responsibilities that office has to students. I have served as president. Rotary Club of Augusta, as a director of the Greater Augusta Chamber of Commerce, a trustee of the Augusta-Richmond County Museum, a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way and the Paine College Cluster, moderator of the Pirst Baptist Church and have held memberships in the CSRA Ancillary Manpower Planning Board, the Greater Augusta Arts Council, Advisory Committee, Augusta region. National Alliance of Business; and the Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society. I serve as the executive head of A.C. and of all its departments. I also serve as the ex-officio chairman of the faculty. As the official medium of the communication between the faculty and the chancellor of the University System of Georgia, I must recommend annually to the Board of Regents the election of the re-election of the faculty and other employees, the salary of each, and all promotions and removals. I also grant leaves of absence to faculty members for study. I "The primary responsibility of Augusta College is to offer you the kind of environment that would result in the highest level of education possible. Everything else that we do on this campus is supportive of that effort. Your education can take place on many fronts in a classroom, at a public lecture, a student union event or in a study carrel at the Reese Library. I would hope that as your president and speaking on behalf of all campus personnel, none of us ever loses sight of our primary goal the sole reason we are all here and that is to provide to you, the student, the best possible learning environment. We hope that we have helped you become creative, responsible and productive citi- zens. Our program is designed to confront you with important ideas . and to help you develop specific skills which will promote success in this complex soci- ety. We believe this and have established this as part of our official purpose. We seek to create an environ- ment which promotes and encourages intellectual freedom, excellence in teaching, productive research and publication, continuing faculty development and professional service to the community. Thousands of students over the years have walked the corridors that you are now walking. They have had some of the same problems, conflicts and frustrations that you have experienced. They have managed to hurdle the obstacles, find solutions, and have gone on to their respective careers and lives. For those of you who are holding the last yearbook you'll receive from this institution, I'd like to wish you future happiness and success though they are not always one and the same. I hope your years here will be remembered fond- ly and that you will return year after year to enjoy the many social activities and events sponsored for you by the AC Alumni Association. I encourage you to feel free to come by my office at any time not only in your role today as students, but in your role of tomor- row as alumni of Augusta College." President George A. Sylvester As acting Editor, I would like to say a special thank you to several people who proved invaluable to me this year. These people are: President George Christenberry for sharing his life's story, Dean Roscoe Williams for putting up with all my BS and the late deadlines, Mrs. Mary Dickson for her help. Mrs. Sue Giddens for sharing her list of students, Mr. Frank Lee for figuring out who all those people were, Mrs. Dee Davis for figuring out who all those other people were. Miss Teresa Sylvester, my sister, for being the only person who would volunteer to help me draw layouts and type, and last, but not least, Mr. Gerald Steele for all the late hours spent helping me type and stamp pictures to get this book to print and for putting up with all my bad moods because no one wanted to help with this book. To all these people, I say again, Thank you! Donna G. Sylvester Editor-in-Chief. JOSTSNS ystiujooc
