The teams reached the finals with lopsided vic- tories over the Superstars and the Schmucks. A pair of interceptions by Danny Lee paved the way for two Circle K touchdowns. Bill Dean ran for one score and threw to Tommy Bussey for the ftther. The 76'ers tied the game on two TD receptions by Hannie Welcher, one from brother Greg, the other from Danny Freeman. The game remained tied until Weese's game winning grab. Basketball :, Baseball Swimming Tenuis Golf COLLEGIATE SPORTS Coach Marvin 120 Vanover For most teams a 17-8 record would be sufficient reason for joyous celebration, but for the Jags 1971-72 must be considered an off season. However, when the team's extreme lack of height and dismal shooting for about 2/3 of the >ear are taken into account 1 7-8 was not that bad. Six of the eight losses came against three of the top teams in District 25, and the Jags had two near misses against Mercer, who lost by onl\ b points to the eventual NCAA-College Division Champ. The Jags were extremely tough at the beginning (8-1) and end (.>-()) of the sea- son, but weren't so hot in between. The Jags went through most oi the tough portion of their schedule with a front line that averaged around 6-.\ which is not that big for a high school team. With a strong recruiting year, and that long sought big man, Jag fortunes may rise this year with four of the five starters back. VIGr TINSLEY-Il is questionable as to uhether Augusta College ill ever come up uith a pla\er the defensive equal of VIC. VIC's contributions to the team went far deeper than the box score indicates, and after the return of HENRY DAVIS to the starting lineup, he moved to center, where he was never embarrassed, despite his stature (6-5). 123 Ben Davis-Ben snapped whal had been a year long shooting slump with a brilliant performance down the stretch, and finished as the teams leading scorer, averaging better than 18 a game. Ben pumped in 38 points against Columbus for the highest individual output of any Jag last season. Ben shot ell over 50% from the field in pacing the Jags' strong finish, which is remarkable when you consider the average length of his shots. f^*i "^^^ r=* ^ , 1 Il .... -..4 ^^^ wmm ^ IT ^ ^ * ^L 124 r-. t Bob Kemp-Bob transferred to AC from Northeast Oklahoma JC along with Mel Hall, where he es- tablished himself as a highly capable floor leader. Bob moved right mlo the starting lineup with the Jags, but never righted himself after a poor start. Some hard post-season practice should pay off for Bob, and he will, in all probability, be an entirely new ballplayer in 1972-73. 127 Henry Davis-Henr>. heller knoun as thicken M;in, started the season ni Inie shape uith a 2S pmiit perrDrmanee in the season opener, hut uas ui- jured the next night. He did nol recover lulK lor ahmit si\ ueeks. but vvhen he linallN relumed to lorm. he displaced ihe ahiliti. Ihal could make him AC'S third All-Ameriean. In the lliial hall ol the season he averaged about -2 points and I 1 rebounds as a 6-2 loruard. M^ ^i 1 i^^ ^W ^^^^ ^^^^m ^ ^^^^Hni^k Mel Hall-If anything good came out of the injury to Henry, it was the emergence of Mel Hall as a starter for the Jags. Mel. known for his great hustle and leaping ability, established himself as possibly the most consistent performer on the team, averaging 16 points and II rebounds per contest, although he was constantly outmatched physicalK by opposing forwards. ^r \ 'WM^m. The perfect mark included victories over such major opponents as Clemson, CUrvidson. Emory, and in the team's finest moment - Georgia Tech. With only one swimmer retuiaiing from the school's first squad. Coach Tom Pepper did an amazing Job of recruiting that obviously paid off. He brought in ..seven outstanding swimmers to join Rust\ Dunbar in forming the nucleus of what developed into one of the best non-univcrsily squads in the South. Of the new recruits, Mike Darling turned out to be the real find, as he established new marks in five of the nine events, and was a member of both record relay teams. In addition, he* along with diver Jim Claffey, qualified lor the Nationals, but w as uiiaijU? to compete due to a paper error. Pepper also brought Gary Shepard, f?jck Baile\, Doug Fleck, Rob Whitters, Pete Blais, and local prospect Joe Radford with him to AC, in his first step to establish Augusta College, as a swimming power. He succeeded. J*"N| Coach Denny Buraii Baseball 138 The Augusta College baseball team enjo\ed its most successful season ever, as the Jags posted a 13-10 record. All was not entirely joyous, however. AC dropped its last four games and the los.ses prevented the Jags from making their first appearance ever in the District Playoffs. Rod Thompson was elected the team's Most Valuable Player, and merited the ;iuard with a team leading batting average of .373. Rod also led the Jag hitters in runs (22) and hits (31), tied for the lead with Keith Ford in homers with five, and placed second to Ford with 21 RBTs. i> iiiiiiM^iiiiMiiiiiiiini 140 'i Ford likewise led the team in a number of offensive statistics, doubles, triples, total bases, and RBTs (25). averaging better than one per game. He batted .333, behind only R. Thompson and Eddie George (.349). Rickey Brown paced the Jag hurlers with a 5-4 record, al- though he tailed off considerably near the end of the season. At one time he sported an ERA of just over I, but finished with a mark of 4.06. David Haskell was the surprise of the pitching staff, as he was unbeaten in three decisions, and was the lone AC pitcher with an ERA below 3. 141 '4 ."'A ij" 144 146 150 151 f ia:!>trtyyyjup fm ^SSlI ^S^^./,, Ijr^pl ^' * "'^' \1 jyiMSy I M PIP" . t^^'A 155 .i. 156 159 '^4 \. 1^.
