THA^^xSGIVINC PRAYER, Thirteen what? Friday the Thirteenth thirteen times a year. Thirteen car payments instead of the usual twelve. Thirteen rental payments .each year. Thirteen months between each birthday. As your imagination begins to work you vrill come up with scads of things you must consider in viev; of the loroposed thirteen month year. This is a proposal to apply uniformity to the number of days in each month, giving twenty- eight to each. Each month and each v/eek would begin on Sunday, with TBxactly four v^eeks to each month. A nevr month would be in- serted in the summer, nerhaps be- tween June and July, thus giving thirteen months, each month hav- ing twenty-eight days. Tvrenty- eight times thirteen would give us 36^ days. An extra holiday, New Jfears Day, which would not appear in the calendar, vrould give the necessary 3^5 days for -norm.al years. In Leap ^ear a second holiday viould be inserted. Under the new proposed system there would be no necessity for a sep- arate chart for each month. Each month vfould look exactly alike and the only change ..oeded vrould be the name ' of /the mbhth. In some respects the nroposed thir- teen-month calendar would be of advantage, but one drawback would be in the difficulty of dividing the year into a half-yearly per- iod or a quarter-yearly period. Then, too, the rent vrou'ld have to be paid thirteen times in the year instead of twelve! And every month ^^Je'd have Friday the Thirteenth I Adjustments could be made, of course, and undoubtedly ^Tiat do you, as an Augusta College strdent, have to be thank- ful for? As the Thanksgiving sea- son approaches, the Cannon gives you an opportunity to express your thanks in a prayer to God, Day and evening students ' are urged to enter the "Thanksgiving Prayer" contest. Prayers must be addressed to "Our Father...." and should contain thanks for Augusta College. There is no vrord limit. The prayer and signature must be typed and turned in to the library. Deadline for entering will be Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7-2 p. m . Entries will be judged on orig- inality of thought. A suitable award v/ill be given. All entries will become nronerty of Augusta College. The best "Thanksgiving Prayer" will be printed in the next issue of the Cannon on Tuesday, Nov, 2^, would be hiade in the event of general acceptance of the pro- posal . Jiisf think,' another month added between June and July would give an extra month of summer vacation and with each month a little shorter, the school year wouldn't be as long. The U-th of July and Christmas vfould always be on Wed- nesday. Since there vrill be only twenty- eight days in each m.onth, those persons having birthdays on the 29th, 30th, and _31st, would either never have another birth- day, or else they vrould just have to choose one at random. How about you? Do. you v/ant your months packaged by the dozen or vrould you CONSIDER THIRTEEN? * * TRAFFIC AND PARKING SURVEY The CANNON invites your cooperation in a campus traffic improve- Bient survey. We reouest every Augusta College student to complete one copy of the follovdng questionaire. Day students as well as stu* dents who are enrolled in day and evening courses should deposit their questionaire in the CAN^CN ballot box (main hall, Administration Building). Students enrolled in evening courses only should submit their questionaire to their instructors. The CA"" CN will publish the results of this survey next week. Read and nr. Lee rtallace. THANKSGIVING PRaYER Our Father, again we pause amidst our bounty to meditate upon thy goodness. Our forefathers proclaimed the season one of Thanksgiving, Thus, we come in h\imility and gratitude to reverence those principles held a&'" sacred and noble. As we commeaiorate the day and its origin, may we enumerate our blessings. Thou has kept us under the shadow of' thy wing and hast given us .qui: ."daily bread"* Our blessings have come from the abundance of Th "storehouse, ' As the leaves of the woodland fall to the earth unnumbered, so have Thy olessings come to us, He would not let the season pass without thanking Thee for our Augusta College, its growth, and its vision. iXiay this Institution ever be a beacon in the broadening horizons of all who come within her portals, as we seek wisdom and aspiration, endow us with inspir- ation. while the Thanksgiving season so ueautifully tints the forest, we clothe our hearts with gratitude and commit our lives into Thy ''.eeping - the Creator of all life's design, "the giver of all good and perfect gifts." ^men. Let us celebrate the orivilege that is faith, whereby we are. sustained in time of confusion and sorrow, in time of concord and gladness. Let us celebrate the responsibility that is charity and hope, whereby air within air and spots upon paper are transformed into lan- guage; even in solitude, we need not be exiles. We are never alone. Let us celebrate the splendor that is color and form, music and speech, flavor, aroma, and texture, whereby delight becomes reality. Let us celebrate the freedom and obligation vrhich are ethics and intellect, v/hereby all men may cultivate gord-will and the earth har- vest peace. Let us celebrate in heart, in mind, in spirit. Let us rejoice. We are blessed vath good tidings of great loy. May we become worthy of them! Dr. M. P. How does the poinscttia come to be the flower of Christmas? The poinsettia as a symbol of Christ- mas is a completely American deve- lopment in the annals of the day. In 1836 it was brought to the U.S. when our first Minister to Mexico returned from there; his name was Dr. Joel R. Poinsett and the flow- er was named for him. Lovely leg- ends surround the development of the flower. One such story ts that a poor child who wished to give a gift to the Virgin Mary was heartbroken because she had noth- ing of value or beauty. As she approached the Mother of Jesus, in desperation she pulled some of the scrawny flowers at her feet, merely to make a gesture of love. As she did so, the flov/er was transfigur- ed into scarlet brilliance. What do candles in the window mean? For centuries, the light of candles has symbolized the enlight- enment that ^esus brought to the earth. From the early Christians we have a legend that the Holy babe wanders through the streets of the v;crld on Christma? Mince pie has been a symbolic food of the Christmas sea- son for as long as we have any re- cords of the celebration. Because it is full of spices and fruits, it represents the choice and exotic treasures of the East, the home of the Vise Men, Originally it was made in the loaf shape of the man- ger in which Christ was laid after He was born. Now let us change the seen a bit and take a look at the r''^clpc for a gigantic pie that was baked for Sir Henry Grey one Christmas : Huge meat pies were made that are un- believable as to size and content. The recipes of the clirP^iclsrs differ but all agree thar 'the pic baked for Sir Henry Grey was 9 ft. in circumference and weighed l65 pounds. It was served from a four- v/heel cart built for the purpose.
