His father was a career Army man and he remembers growing up at bases all over the United States. He attended Virginia Military Institute and recalls the death of a classmate in the immediate aftermath of Desert Storm. His first duties were serving as protocol officer at air bases in Alaska and Virginia. He describes attending Air Force survival school and recalls his first overseas duty as an air battle manager in Iraq, enforcing the no-fly zones there. He explains his duties and flying schedule in Iraq and remembers several experiences with Iraqi pilots who deliberately tested the no-fly zones. He describes his activities on the day of the 9/11 attacks in great detail. He was assigned to an AWACS aircraft squadron at the time and after the attacks his unit flew round-the-clock surveillance missions over the Rocky Mountain region. He recalls how surreal it was to be in the air with no commercial airliners allowed to fly. He describes how his unit located private pilots who were still flying because they were unaware of the attacks and directed them to return to their airfields. He recalls later assignments in Korea and in Qatar and explains how radar worked on the AWACS and JSTARS aircraft in which he flew. He describes his post-military career and activities and expresses his feelings about his service.</dc:description><dc:description>Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS); E-3 (aircraft); Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS); survival school; Air Battle Manager; Command and Control Officer; Desert Storm; Prince Sultan Air Base (Saudi Arabia); NORAD; Operation Southern Watch; NATO Clause; "Mother Tinker"; rules of engagement; Security Control of Air Traffic and Navigation (SCATANA); raw radar; transponders; "the canoe"; ground tracking radar; Main Supply Route Tampa; improvised explosive device (IED); "sheriff's stations"; convoy; medevac; Humvees; radar return time; third country nationals (TCN); 4-H; Global War on Terror;</dc:description><dc:description>Brian Stone served in the United States Air Force before and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.</dc:description><dc:format>video/mp4</dc:format><dc:publisher>Atlanta, Ga. : Kenan Research Center</dc:publisher><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Veterans History Project oral history recordings</dc:source><dc:source>Veterans History Project collection, MSS 1010, Kenan Research Center, Atlanta History Center</dc:source><dc:subject>Operation Enduring Freedom, 2001---Personal narratives, American</dc:subject><dc:subject>Radar</dc:subject><dc:subject>Operation Noble Eagle, 2001-</dc:subject><dc:subject>P-3 AEW (Control aircraft)</dc:subject><dc:subject>War on Terrorism, 2001-2009</dc:subject><dc:subject>Persian Gulf War, 1991</dc:subject><dc:subject>September 11 Terrorist Attacks, 2001</dc:subject><dc:subject>United States.
