He describes his post-war careers in technology and banking, and explains how he was drafted immediately following his graduation from high school. He remembers going to the induction center and his subsequent training at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia. His training period was shortened because of the Army's need for replacement soldiers. He describes his experiences on the troop ship that took him to Europe, including sleeping and eating arrangements and an incident when rough seas tipped over a vat of raw eggs that were being prepared for the men. He recalls several experiences in combat in Germany including witnessing US troops kill a group of German soldiers who were trying to surrender and an incident when most of the men in his half track truck were killed by German troops. He describes the time he spent as part of the occupation forces in Germany, including several emotional experiences he had listening to classical music being performed. He visited the Nuremberg war crimes trials on two occasions and describes what he remembers seeing there. He recalls his homecoming and describes his post-war education.</dc:description><dc:description>half track; rifleman; 50 caliber machine gun; hearing loss; venereal disease; non-fraternization; Army Service Record Score (ASRS); points; St. Stephen's Cathedral, Passau;</dc:description><dc:description>Bennie Tate served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II.</dc:description><dc:format>video/mp4</dc:format><dc:publisher>Atlanta, Ga. : Kenan Research Center</dc:publisher><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Veterans History Project oral history recordings</dc:source><dc:source>Veterans History Project collection, MSS 1010, Kenan Research Center, Atlanta History Center</dc:source><dc:subject>World War, 1939-1945--Atrocities</dc:subject><dc:subject>World War, 1939-1945--Personal narratives, American</dc:subject><dc:subject>Nuremberg Trial of Major German War Criminals, Nuremberg, Germany, 1945-1946</dc:subject><dc:subject>50 Caliber gun</dc:subject><dc:subject>Sexually transmitted diseases</dc:subject><dc:subject>Bazookas</dc:subject><dc:subject>Chopin, Frédéric, 1810-1849.
