His plane was shot down on December 30, 1943, while he was returning from a bombing mission to the ball bearing plants at Ludwigshafen, Germany. He and his co-pilot were assisted by members of the French Underground until they were discovered by the Germans. He was repeatedly questioned by the Gestapo and was finally sent to Stalag Luft I where he spent the next year and a half as a POW.
