He first entered Republican politics in 1974 in a lost bid for the Georgia House of Representatives in Cobb County. He won the spot in 1976 and served seven terms in the House, the last two as Minority leader. He was the Republican candidate for governor of Georgia in 1990, losing to Democratic lieutenant governor Zell Miller.
