Description:
Clifford B. Dunaway, a veteran of World War II, enlisted in the U.S. Navy just before Pearl Harbor when he heard that recruits were being sought in Georgia to man the newly commissioned light cruiser, USS Atlanta. Dunaway served as a gunner's mate first class on the Atlanta. The ship was heavily damaged during the naval battle of Guadalcanal and was scuttled by the crew the next day, November 13, 1942; during this interview, Dunaway recalls evacuating wounded men from the ship as it foundered.
