The program was spearheaded by Mayor Maynard Jackson and Reverend John F. Havlik and was organized by a steering committee that included several local civic and religious leaders including Martin Luther King Sr., Joseph E. Lowery, Wyche Fowler, Nat Welch, and Randolph Taylor.
