He worked at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia from 1946 to 1960 as an assistant professor of political science, dean of administration and a vice president. Jones served as the president of the Emily and Ernest Woodruff Foundation, the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation, the Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation and the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation. He served as the chairman of the Board of Directors of Economic Opportunity Atlanta for eleven years.
