He served as the superintendent of the public schools in Bessemer, Alabama from 1949 to 1957. He held the same position in Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1957 to 1960. He subsequently served as the superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools from 1960 to 1973. Letson retired early from his position in Atlanta as part of a compromise desegregation plan, which would include naming an African American to the position of superintendent.
