In 1770, Greene was chosen to serve in the Rhode Island General Assembly and was re-elected in 1771, 1772 and 1775. During the Revolutionary War, Greene rose to the rank of major general of the Continental Army. In 1785, Greene moved to his estate on the Georgia coast.
