Its mission was to provide African American men with an education in the fields of ministry and education. In 1879, the Institute relocated to the basement of the Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta and changed its name to the Atlanta Baptist Seminary. In 1885, the institution relocated to its current site in the West End community of Atlanta.
