The bank’s proposed headquarters on the south side of Alabama Street, half a block east of Whitehall Street (now Peachtree Street), was burned by General Sherman’s army during the Civil War. As a result, the bank opened for business in the home of its first president Alfred Austell. However, the Alabama Street building was rebuilt and occupied by the bank a few months later.
