In 1860 the Hebrew Benevolent Society was formed in order to obtain a Jewish burial ground, and to organize relief for the Jewish poor. The Temple was established in 1867, and at that time was Orthodox. In 1895 Rabbi David Marx (1872-1962) brought Reform Judaism to the Temple. In 1958 the synagogue was bombed in response to Rabbi Jacob M. “Jack” Rothschild's (1911-1973) support of civil rights. It is located at 1589 Peachtree Street.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:identifier>VIS 170.2791.001</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>ahc1702791001</dc:identifier><dc:publisher>Atlanta, Ga. : Kenan Research Center</dc:publisher><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:source>Atlanta History Photograph Collection</dc:source><dc:subject>Religious architectural elements--Georgia--Atlanta</dc:subject><dc:subject>Temples--Georgia--Atlanta</dc:subject><dc:subject>Synagogues--Georgia--Atlanta</dc:subject><dc:subject>Buildings--Atlanta--Georgia</dc:subject><dc:title>The Temple</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
