BOX 10 DEMOREST, GA 30535 (706)778-3000 YONAHIAN J s Greetings from President 6). Ray Cfeere Dear Students: The 1998 academic year has been very exciting as we began the first year of the College's second century. Everyone associated with Piedmont can take great pride in what has been accomplished in the past one hundred years. From the time the Rev. Charles C. Spence founded the College in 1 897 to today, each administra- tion has been dedicated to the improve- ment not just of the College, but of the community and Northeast Georgia as a whole. Through the decades, Piedmont has maintained its vision of leadership and service rooted to a common goal of excellence. This past year at Piedmont has been filled with challenges and great opportunities. It has been my honor to serve as president during a time of tremendous growth in enrollment and during a time that has seen great changes in the campus, including the construction of Alumni Park and Congregational Circle, the addition of the Marten's Botanical Center, new construction for a fourth dormitory and major renovations of Wallace Hall. This year we will see more changes for Daniel Hall as the fourth floor is renovated to house the new R. Hugh Daniel school of Nursing, and we hope to begin construction in the fall on a new athletic center with a much-needed gymnasium. But the year will also be remembered for the loss of one of our most historic buildings, Patten Hall, to fire. While this was a tragic loss for the College, the new science building that will rise on the site will be a worthy successor to Patten Hall, which served the College for more than 50 years. The additions to the campus, new academic programs, and the enrollment growth in Demorest and in Athens are all proof that the next 100 years are going to be just as memorable and rewarding as the first. I hope that those of you graduating this year will come back often to watch your alma mater grow. We here at Piedmont will certainly be watching your careers with great interest and pride. IK W. The original yearbook staff worked this year to produce a complete and accurate history of the year at Piedmont. On a spring morning in April, however, a year's worth of work was lost during the Patten fire. The Yonahian office was destroyed~all photos, layouts, and records lay in ruins. Out of the ashes has risen this brief retrospective of a difficult time at Piedmont College. We hope that you forgive oversights and omissions, and rejoice in the fact that through the dedicated work of friends of the Yonahian, we have this abbre- viated edition. The staff bids a fond farewell to Patten Hall, a grand old building that housed our office for many years, and we look forward to next year's complete edition.
