Garen Simmons President of Piedmont College Congratulations to the class of 1983. As the eighty-sixth class to graduate from Piedmont College since 1897, you are unique. We most frequently think of the traditional students among you, those who graduated in the high school class of 1979 and entered college in September of that year. Your class, however, is not a homogenous group in that it contains a number of older students. Some are completing interrupted educational careers; many are women with families and other responsibilities; some are changing careers; some are obtaining an additional degree; some joined your class to satisfy intellectual curiosity and others for the pure pleasure of learning. This diversity makes your class both unique and strong. The rapidly changing conditions of the 1980's added to the uniqueness of your class for these years spanned the most serious economic recession in the second half of the twentieth century. In some ways, that recession was not as severe as that of the 1930's; while in other ways, it was worse. It certainly was different. Although personal and family hardships were not always apparent, they were real, and they influenced those earning a college education. It often has been said that hard times make hard people. I would hope that you, the members of the class of 1983, are intensly motivated, self-relient and resilient. But I trust that hard times have not made you insensitive to the needs of others. I have faith that you will follow the Piedmont tradition of assisting others as many of you have been assisted along the way. You are intelligent, diligent, ethicly and spiritually strong, compassionate, and a credit to your families, your communities, and your nations. While making a living and full rewarding life for yourself, I am confident that you will continue to show Christian compassion and, in the years ahead, know the joy of helping others. That joy was expressed very appropriately by one of your contemporaries with the following simple but profound truth: "When you row another fellow across the stream, you get there yourself. " In Appreciation To all those who gave their time, effort, and support we would like to extend our deepest gratitude. Thank you. The Yonahian Staff Dedicated to Dr. Mary L. Griggs Dr. Mary Lillie Griggs, retired Professor of Mathematics, Piedmont College passed away this past Sept. 12 after 35 years of service to education. Dr. Griggs was born August 29, 1913 to the late Joseph H. Griggs and Lillie Kimmy Griggs who moved to Demorest when Dr. Griggs was six years old. She attended elementary and high school in Demorest before graduating from Piedmont College. A.B. Magna cum Laude 1932. In 1933 she earned her Master's degree and in 1971 the Ed.S. degree in Mathematics at the University of Georgia. In 1972, Piedmont College awarded her the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Education. During her twenty years as Chairman of Mathematics at Piedmont College, she was one of the most beloved of teachers. She was also a strong force on the faculty, serving on many important committees of the College. These included the Academic Affairs Committee, Self Study Financial Resource Committee, Self Study Steering Committee, and the Faculty Social Committee. Extra academic responsibilities were advisor for the Gamma Chi Society, the Torch Club and the National Honorary Scholarship Society, Alpha Chi. Professionally, Dr. Griggs was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematical Association of America, the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, in which she held various offices, and Phi Kappa Phi. For those of us who knew Dr. Griggs she will be sorely missed and always have a place in our hearts. - *, 'A 1 n Mr. Robert Schwyn, Assistant to the President Mr. Robert Gregory, Financial Aid Flois Duckett Treasurer Mr. Duwayne Keller Recruiter Coach Charles T. His enthusiasm for life and his thoughtf ulness of others were experienced by Mrs. Walter and myself over several years of travel in Florida as we enjoyed the hospitality of his warm- hearted family in the parsonage of the Community Church of Vero Beach. We looked forward eagerly to having him as a student on our campus. Then just two weeks before registration came the shocking tele- phone call from his father, Dr. G. Julius Rice, saying "David will not be coming to college this fall. He was killed by a bullet from the gun of a stranger in a parking lot." Later came a letter from David's family saying, "This is a difficult letter to write because of a sadness and heartbreak we must share. Our younger son, David, was shot and killed about 1:30 A.M. Saturday, August 28th. David and two friends had left a lounge to come home. Just as they reached the car in the parking lot, three men in their early thirties jumped them. David and his friends had never seen them before. Suddenly one of them drew a pistol and shot David and his two friends. David died instantly." The letter bravely concludes: "We must now go on with God's help and give thanks for evory day God gives us to live." All of us who knew David in the flesh will always remember him as a buoyant, eager , and able young man. The tragedy of his loss we all mourn. Likewise , we feel a greater responsibility to remember and strengthen "all that is good and right and true and of good report.
