" 2 Piedmont Colleae THIS IS OUR WORLD! Piedmont College| 3 Message from the President Dear Students: Back in the late 1880s, New England reformers arrived in Georgia to set up their ideal town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. They es- tablished businesses around Hazel Creek, built churches and modest homes, and raised their families. It wasn't long before thay built a large, wood frame building at the top of a hill as a prominent symbol of their faith in the power of education. In a very short time this remote, agricultural area could boast a school and a college with over 300 students. And just after the turn of the century, the growing College had the good fortune to become affiliated with the Congregational Churches, the church of the pilgrams. From such meaningful beginnings, Piedmont Col- lege was born, and through thick and thin the College continued to thrive because of the dedication and faith of her early leaders. But the depression and the war years created hard times for the College. When Dr. Walter, a prominent Congregationalist, arrived in the late forties, his unhappy task as new President was to consider closing the College. But once again a New Englander saw the great promise of education in northeast Georgia, and Dr. Walter not only kept the College open he also established an endowment that makes Piedmont's mission possible. As this great College grows and makes more educational opportunities available, we are reminded that faith, hard work, and perseverance are the watchwords of the Congregationalist heritage and educational mission at Piedmont. And as this yearbook adds new names to this rich history of service, we reflect on our past and pledge ourselves to teach and learn in a manner that brings honor to dear old Piedmont, may she ever stand. Piedmont College School of Arts and Sciences The School of Arts and Sciences encompasses the fine arts, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences and the social sciences. It also includes interdisciplinary programs in which all students develop skills in rational debate and analytical thinking by honing their writing and speaking skills. Programs of Study Humanities Fine Arts Music Art Theatre Arts English French German Japanese Religion and Philosophy Spanish Interdisciplinary Studies Liberal Arts Mathematics Mathematics Mathematics/Computer Information Systems Natural Sciences Biology Chemistry Earth Science Physical Science Physics Social Sciences Anthropology Criminal Justice History Political Science Psychology Sociology School of Education The profession of teaching is one that allows a person to make a difference in the life of an individual. Students who choose teaching as their career should be aware that they have the poten- tial to help mold the future. The mission of the teacher education program is to prepare teachers to be communicators of knowledge and educa- tional goals, facilitators of learning and thinking, and nurturers of self-esteem and interpersonal skills. Piedmont also offers a Dual-Degree Program for students seeking initial certification to teach English, mathematics, science, social science or Spanish at the secondary level. This program, also called a Fifth Year MAT program, allows students to earn their bachelor's degrees and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees. Piedmont College School of Nursing The R.H.Daniel School of Nursing curriculum is community- based, with a focus on health promotion and prevention of disease. For students preparing for registered nurse status, the program of study is four years. The first two years include general education courses in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics to provide a foundation for the nursing courses taken in the junior and senior years. The last two years are devoted exclusively to nursing courses and clinical practicums. Following successful completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), one of the components of the licensure process. For Registered Nurses wishing to obtain the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, the pro- gram of study is four semesters in length following completion of all general education requirements of the nursing major. Profes- sional nursing courses are scheduled one day each week in order to allow the RN student to work, if desired. Practicums in Community Health and Leadership/Management are arranged at appropriate clinical sites. School of Business The modern manager is a decision maker who must understand accounting, communications, economics, finance, human behavior, marketing, quantitative methods, computer information systems and technology in order to comprehend and resolve business problems. Business administration at Piedmont takes these factors into account with the assistance of local business leaders. These leaders continue to serve as advisors to the program and help provide links to the business world. Each student is encouraged to participate as an intern with a local business or other organiza- tion. These opportunities enhance future employment possibilites. The School of Business Administration prepares students for rewarding and productive careers as business leaders with global perspec- tive. Piedmont College Athens Center Dr. Sliaron B. Piedmont College The Athens Center The Piedmont College Athens Center offers a small-college experience in a big college town for undergraduate and graduate students. Opened in 1996, the Athens Center serves students in the Athens-Clarke County area with convenient day and evening classes. For students seeking to complete bachelor's or advanced degrees, the Athens Center offers small classes and indi- vidualized instruction. Most classes meet once a week during eight- week or 16- week sessions. Students here receive the same level of instruction as those at Piedmont's main campus and can draw on the academic and cultural resources available in Athens, Georgia's fourth largest metropolitan area. While the Athens Center currently serves primarily upper-level students, fresh- men and sophomore students can take advantage of a joint enrollment program with Athens Technical Institute. In this program, students attend Athens Tech for two years and can then transfer appropriate credits to Piedmont to complete their bachelor's degree. The Athens Center academic buildings are located near downtown Athens on Prince Avenue and North Milledge Avenue. The Center includes a computer lab with Internet access where students can study and conduct research, plus Athens Center students have full library privileges at the University of Georgia Main Library. COHORT PROGRAMS Schools of the 2 1 st Century will need teachers who are prepared to meet the challenges of higher academic standards, increasingly diverse student populations, complex social issues, and expanding uses of high technology. At Piedmont College, the response to these challenges has been the development of an innova- tive program that focuses on the professional growth of teachers and the improve- ment of schools. The Piedmont Master of Arts Cohort Program is designed for practicing teachers who want to make a difference in the lives of children by improving instruction in their own classrooms and their schools. Classes are held in school systems across Georgia and are composed of cohorts of students who take the same series of courses together. The program is directed and taught by Piedmont College faculty, working in partnership with scholar- practitioners, often from the same school system where classes are taught. This access to Piedmont and local resources makes it possible to address the immediate needs and goals of the system by linking theory to actual practice. 12 Piedmont College -jiM a k >JHe II Ml j| ^V* ~* % wl fnj II |> J gg^^^L ^^ Jfe^ ^^^^^B L\ Sites of the Athens Center Piedmont College!
