There is but one session in the Seminary year. The year commences on the third Monday in September, and ends with the second Thursday in May. ADMISSIONS The regular time for admission to the Seminary is in Septem- ber. It is very desirable that all Students should be present at the commencement of the year, particularly those entering the Junior Class. The Seminary is open to Students of every denomination. Candidates for admission must furnish the Faculty with satis- factory testimonials, from enlightened and pious persons, of their talents, piety and prudence, of having been regularly educated at some College or University, or of having made attainments deemed equivalent, and of being in full com- munion with some Christian Church. Such persons, on assent- ing to the Constitution of the Seminary, are admitted to the enjoyment of all its privileges. 24 CATALOGUE. COURSE OF STUDIES. The course of Study embraces a period of three years, and covers the several departments of Theological education, I. BIBLICAL LITERATURE. 1. Yarious portions of the Historical, Poetical and Prophetic Books are read, together with the Chaldee parts of Ezra and Daniel. Translation of por- tions of the New Testament into Hebrew. 2. The Syriac and Arabic Languages are taught to such Stu- dents as desire it. The Seminary presents advantages very rare, if not unequalled, in this country, for the prosecution of Oriental Studies. One of its instructors, whose vernacular is the Arabic, and who is minutely and critically skilled in He- brew and the cognate dialects, who speaks and writes them with fluency and ease, has a choice collection of Oriental' works ; the Library of the South Carolina College is particularly rich in CATALOGUE. 25 them, and the Library of the Serninaiy is as well furnished with them as most of the public Libraries of the country. The drilling in the Hebrew language is very thorough. Students are practised in writing it, as well as in reading it. II. CHKISTIAN THEOLOGY. The department of Theology is taught partly by text-books, and partly by lectures. The text-books used are : Paley's Evidences of Christianity, and Calvin's Institutes. The first is studied in the Junior, and the last in the Middle and Senior years. The lectures to the Junior Class are on Miracles, Inspiration and the Internal Evidences of Christianity. Those to the Senior embrace an introductory view of Moral and Metaphysical Philosophy, and a complete course on Sys- tematic Theology. The students in all the classes are required to write dissertations on subjects assigned them by the Pro- fessor. In addition to their studies in the Seminary, they are required to prepare, in their vacations, either an analysis of some standard work, such as Edwards on the Will, Luther de Servo Arbitrio, or elaborate compositions upon some particular topic. III. ECCLESIASTICAL HISTOEY AND CHUPCH POLITY. The teaching of these branches is partly by lectures and partly by text-books. 1. The Junior Class is occupied one day of every week with the first part of Church History, extending down to the setting up of the Christian Church. The text-book is Kurtz's Manual of Sacred History. 2. The Middle Class give their attention two days every week to the second part of Church History, extending from the times of the Apostles to the Eighteenth Century. The text-book is Mosheim's Ecclesiastical History the Professor constantly supplementing the text-book with written lectures. 26 CATALOGUE. 3. The third year is devoted to Church Polity. The text- book is Book IV. of Calvin's Institutes ; the Professor meets the Class twice every week, either for a Lecture or for examination on the text-book. Particular attention is given to the exposition of our Form of Government and Book of Discipline. IY. SACEED EHETOEIC. 1. Eecitations in Campbell's Philosophy of Ehetoric and Porter's Homiletics. 2. Friday evening is occupied by the Professors in familiar conference before the Students, upon personal piety, the best plan and method of study, and the practical duties of the Pas- toral Office. BUILDINGS. These are neat and commodious. The Central Building is devoted to the Library and other public purposes. Law Hall and Simons Hall were planned especially for the comfort of the Students, are lighted with gas, and supplied with the most necessary articles of furniture. LIBRARY. The extensive and choice Library of Rev. Dr. Smyth, of Charleston, has been added to the former Library of the Semi- nary, and our whole collection now embraces 17,549 volumes, besides the private Libraries of the Professors, containing 10,000 volumes more. The use of the College Library is also extended, by courtesy, to the Instructors of the Seminary, a collection of great value, and now amounting to 24,000 volumes. The Society of Inquiry on Missions is in the posession of a valuble Cabinet, and its Beading-Room is furnished with the most important Periodicals, Foreign and Domestic. EXPENSES. The Board and Washing of a Student residing in the Seminary amount to from eighty to one hundred dollars per annum. The Institution is a charitable foundation, and no charge is made for room-rent, tuition, or use of Library. Provision is also made for the support of Students in indigent circumstances, $200 per annum being appropriated for this purpose, if so much is required. 28 CATALOGUE. PERKINS PROFESSORSHIP. A new Professorship has been founded in this Institution by the liberality of Hon. John Perkins, of Mississippi, entitled " The Perkins Professorship of Natural Science in connection with Eevelation," the design of which is to evince the harmony of Science .with the records of our faith, and to refute the objections of infidel naturalists. For this purpose Judge Perkins has given to the Seminary the sum of $40,000. He has also given $10,000 to enlarge the foundation for the support of indigent Students ; and has made the Directors of the Seminary his almoners in another charity of $10,000, to enure to the relief of Ministers who are superannuated or infirm, and to the distressed families of those deceased ; a fund which he hopes will be increased by the charities of others. The Students and Ministers of Mississippi and Louisiana are to have the preference in the enjoyment of these last charities. The Seminary has received a legacy under the will of the late John Bull, of South Carolina, which has been long contested and is now decided in favor of the legatees. This legacy will probably amount to temthousand dollars. The Institution needs still further endowments to give it complete efficiency. Among its most pressing wants are an additional tenement for the Students, a new Chapel, and a Library building. SYNODICAL RELATIONS. This Seminary stands now equally related to the three Synods of South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, and is under their joint control. FORM OF BEQUEST. The Seminary is incorporated by the Legislature of South Carolina, and the proper form of a bequest would be as follows : "To the Board of Directors of the Theological Seminary of the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia, to them and to their CATALOGUE. 29 successors, I give and bequeath the sum of , (or, I devise a certain parcel or tract of land, &c.,) to be applied by them to the uses and benefit of said Seminary." Testators will do well to have respect to the laws of the State in which they reside. The State of South Carolina requires that a last Will and Testament be signed by the testator in the presence of three witnesses. The Seminary is pleasantly situated in the thriving city of Columbia a place remarkable for health, the Capital of the State of South Carolina, the seat of its College and other pub- lic Institutions, of easy access by railroads, which are connect- ing it more and more with other portions of the South and South- West, and making it easy of access from any part of the United States.
