SESSIONS. 


There is but one session in the Seminary year. The year com- 
mences on the 1st of October, and ends on the 1st of June. 


ADMISSION, 


The regular time for admission to the Seminary is in October. 
It is very desirable that all Students should be present at the 
commencement of the year, particularly those entering the Junior 
Class. 

The Seminary is open to Students of every denomination. Can- 
didates for admission must furnish the Faculty with satisfactory 
testimonials, from enlightened and pious persons, of their talents, 
piety and prudence,  of having been regularly educated at some 
College or University, or of having made attainments deemed 
equivalent,  and of being in full communion with some Christian 
Church. Such persons, on assenting to the Constitution of the 
Seminary, are admitted to the enjoyment of all its privileges.

COURSE OF STUDIES. 


The course of Study embraces a period of three years, and covers 
the several departments of Theological education. 

I. BIBLICAL LITERATURE. 

1. The Grammar of the Hebrew and Chaldee Languages and the 
Grammatical and Exegetical study of the Hebrew and Chaldee 
Scriptures. Various portions of the Historical, Poetical and 
Prophetic Books are read, together with the Chaldee parts of 
Ezra and Daniel. Translation of portions of the New Testa- 
ment into Hebrew. 

2. The Exegetical study of the New Testament in Greek. The 
Harmony of the four Gospels, the Epistles, the Apocalypse of 
John. 

8. Biblical Antiquities, Sacred Geography, the Principles of Inter- 
pretation, Biblical Criticism, Introduction to the Old and New 
Testaments. 
4. Lectures on the Canon of the Old and New Testaments, on Inter- 
pretation, on Biblical Criticism, on the Languages of the Original 
Scriptures, and on Prophecy. 
The studies in this department occupy six days in each week in 
the Junior year. In the Middle and Senior years there are Exe- 
getical exercises three days in the week. 

The Syriac and Arabic Languages are taught to such Students as 
desire it. A voluntary class in the latter of these has been formed 
during the last year. The Seminary presents advantages very rare, 
if not unequalled, in this country, for the prosecution of Oriental 
Studies. One of its instructors, whose vernactdar is the Arabic, and 
who is minutely and critically skilled in Hebrew and the cognate 
dialects, who speaks and writes them with fluency and ease, has a 
choice collection of Oriental works ; the Library of the South Caro- 
lina College is particularly rich in them, and the Library of the 
Seminary is as well furnished with them as most of the public

Libraries of the country. The drilling in the Hebrew language 
is very, thorough. Students are practised in writing it, as well as 
in reading it. 

II. CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY. 

The department of Theology is taught partly by text-books, and 
partly by lectures. The text-books used are : 

Paley's Evidences of Christianity, and Calvin's Institutes. The 
first is studied in the Junior, and the last in the Middle and Senior 
years. The lectures to the Junior Class are on Miracles, Inspiration 
and the Internal Evidences of Christianity. Those to the Senior 
embrace an introductory view of Moral and Metaphysical Philoso- 
phy, and a complete course on Systematic Theology. The students 
in all the classes are required to write dissertations on subjects 
assigned them by the Professor. In addition to their studies in the 
Seminary, they are required to prepare, in their vacations, either an 
analysis of some standard work, such as Edwards on the Will, Luther 
de Servo Arbitrio, or elaborate compositions upon some particular 
topic. 

III. ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY AND CHURCH 
POLITY. 

The teaching of these branches is partly by lectures and partly by 
text books. 

1. The Junior Class is occupied one day of every week with the 

first part of Church History, extending down to the setting 
up of the Christian Church. The text-book is Kurtz's Manual 
of Sacred History. 

2. The Middle Class give their attention two days of every week to 

the second part of Church History, extending from the times 
of the Apostles to the Eighteenth Century. The text-book is 
Mosheim's Ecclesiastical History  the Professor constantly 
supplementing the text-book with written lectures. 

3. The third year is devoted to Church Polity. The text-book is 

Book IV. of Calvin's Institutes ; the Professor meets the Class 
twice every week, either for a lecture or for an examination on 
the text-book. Particular attention is given to the exposition 
of our Form of Government and Book of Discipline.

IV. SACRED RHETORIC. 

1. Recitations in Campbell's Philosophy of Rhetoric and Porters' 

Homiletics. 

2. Exercises in Public Speaking, consisting of Original Declama- 

tions, Delivery of Sermons, and Forensic Debates, accompanied 
with free criticism. 

3. The public and private criticism of Sermons and Skeletons. 

4. Dissertations, Essays and Critiques, prepared by the Senior Class, 

on various subjects in the department of Sacred Rhetoric. 
Tuesday evening is appropriated to Rhetorical Exercises, includ- 
ing Debates, Declamation, and the delivery of Sermons. 


Instruction may be obtained in the city in the French, German, 
Italian and Spanish languages. 


PROFESSOR'S CONFERENCE. 

Friday evening is occupied by the Professors, in familiar confer- 
ence before the Students upon personal piety, the best plan and 
method of study, and the practical duties of the Pastoral Office. 

BUILDINGS. 

These are neat and commodious. The Central Building is devoted 
to the Library and other public purposes. Law Hall and Simons 
Hall were planned especially for the comfort of the students, are 
lighted with gas, and supplied with the most necessary articles of 
furniture. 

LIBRARY. 

The extensive and choice Library of Rev. Dr. Smyth, of Charles- 
ton, has been added to the former Library of the Seminary, and 
our whole collection now embraces 17,260 volumes, besides the 
private Libraries of the Professors, containing 10,000 volumes more. 
The use of the College Library is also extended, by courtesy, to 
the Instructors of the Seminary, a collection of great value, and now 
amounting to 24,000 volumes.

The Society of Inquiry on Missions, is in the possession of a 
valuable Cabinet, and its Heading-Room is furnished with the most 
important Periodicals, Foreign and Domestic. 

EXPENSES. 

The Board and Washing of a student residing in the Seminary 
amount to from eighty to one hundred dollars per annum. The 
Institution is a charitable foundation, and no charge is made for 
room-rent, tuition, or use of Library. Provision is also made for the 
support of all Students in indigent circumstances. 

The Seminary is pleasantly situated in the thriving city of Colum- 
bia  a place remarkable for health, the Capital of the State of South 
Carolina, the seat of its College, and other public Institutions, of 
easy access by railroads, which are connecting it more and more with 
other portions of the South and South- West, and making it easy of 
access from any part of the United States.
