The Presbytery of Hopewell held its annual meeting pursuant to adjournment, and in the absence of the Moderator, was opened with a sermon by the Rev. William B. Richards from Luke 23:39-43. inclusive. The Moderator, still being absent; the Rev. The Rev. Samuel K. Talmage, was chosen Moderator, and Thomas F. Scott, Temporary Assistant Clerk. The Rev. John Brown D.D. appeared, and having rendered satisfactory reasons for tardiness took his seat. The minutes of the last sessions were read and confirmed. The Rev. Dr. Waddel, appeared; and rendered reasons for tardiness and took his seat. A letter from the Rev. Mr. Gamble was read and ordered to lie on the table for the present. A communication from the Rev. Mr. Boggs, assigning reasons for absence from the present sessions was read and the reasons sustained. 407 Drs Cummins and Brown, and the licentiate E.S. Hopping severally rendered reasons for absence from our last stated sessions which was considered and sustained A communication from the church in Decatur, soliciting the advice of Presbytery as to the course they ought to pursue in their present destitute condition, was read, and refered to a committee consisting of Dr. Brown, J.W. Waddel and E L. Newton, to report thereon, as early as practicable. The Rev. William Guillan, late a member of the presbytery of Holstein presented a regular dismission to connect himself with this body which was accepted, and he took his seat as a member. The Rev. Mr. Patterson, reported a church organised by himself in the county of Bibb and called Bethesda consisting of 10. members, and having two ruling elders, which church according to its request, was received under our care and Samuel B. Hunter, one of its elders took a seat as a member. Congregational reports were called for, and committed to a committee consisting of the Stated and Temporary Clerks, to prepare the statistical report to be laid before 408 the next General Assembly. The following committees were appointed to examine the several session books refered to them respectfully; viz. Dr Brown and Mr. Hills to examine the session book of the church of Athens. Mr Chamberlain and Mr. McLaughlin to examine the sessional records of the church in Augusta. Mr McAlpin and Mr Groves to examine the records of the church in Columbus. Mr. Hoyt and Mr. McDonald to examine the records of the church of Fairview. Mr Patterson and Mr Johnston to examine the records of the church of Gainesville. Mr Harrison and Mr Daniel to examine the records of the church of Lexington. Mr. Richards and Mr. Cunningham to examine the records of the church at NewLebanon. Mr. Scott and Mr. Wingfield to examine the records of the church at Newman. Mr. J.W. Waddel and Mr. Hunter to examine the records of 409. the church of Greensborough. Mr Carter and Mr. Newton to examine the records of the church at Thyatira. Mr. Guillan and Mr Mills to examine the records of the church at Washington. The Rev. Edwin Holt a member of the Presbytery of Elizabethtown being present, was invited and took a seat as a correspondent. Mr. Alexander and Dr. Church appeared, and having rendered reasons for not coming earlier took their seats. Whereas the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia, did at its last stated sessions so after the dividing line between this presbytery and the presbytery of Georgia that county of Burke was added to the presbytery of Hopewell; and whereas the Presbyterian church of Burke did at our last stated sessions request to be taken under our care, which petition was granted, provided the concurrence of the Synod could be obtained, said church is therefore now recognised as under our care. Receiving reports on the state of religion was defered, and made the order of the day for tomorrow morning. 410. The subject of endowing of professorship in the Theological Seminary of the Synod, was made the order, of the day for Saturday morning next. On enquiry it was ascertained that the brethren appointed at our last stated sessions, to attend the three and four days meetings, had generally attended: those who were deliquent gave satisfactory reasons for failure. Mr. John McWhorter, a ruling Elder from the church at Gainsville appeared and took a seat. On motion a committee was appointed, consisting of Dr Brown Mr Chamberlain and Dr. Church, ministers, and Messrs Newton Daniel, and, Mills Elders to report arrangements for three and four days meetings. Dr Waddel, asked and obtained leave of absence after this evening, from our remaining sessions. Presbytery adjourned to meet tomorrow at 8. and a half oclock in the Female Academy. Concluded with prayer. 411. Lexington, Friday April 1st 1831. 8 and one half oclock. A.M. Presbytery met pursuant to adjournment and was constituted with prayer. Members present as on yesterday. The minutes of the last session were read and corrected. A letter was received from the Rev. Dr. Goulding assigning reasons for absence from the present sessions, and containing other interesting information. The communication was ordered to lie on the table for the present. A letter was received and read from the Rev Henry Reid giving reasons for absence, which were sustained. The committee appointed to examine the session book of the church of Gainsville, reported that the book was not foresent. The following resolution was adopted: Resolved, that our church sessions be instructed hereafter to have the minutes of each meeting signed by the moderator and clerk. The committees appointed to examine the sessional records of the churches of Greensborough, Washington, Columbus, Thyatira Newnan, Augusta, Fairview, NewLebanon, severally reported, and the books were approved. 412. The Presbytery proceeded to the order of the day of receiving reports on the state of religion, and Dr. Church and Mr Patterson, were appointed a committee to receive said reports, and prepare a narrative of the state of religion within our bounds to be laid before the next General Assembly. Mr Peter Lamar a ruling Elder from the church at Lincolnton appeared and took a seat. The Rev. Arthur M. Mooney of the Presbytery of South Carolina being present was invited and took a seat as a correspondent. A letter was received from the Rev. C. P. Beman assigning reasons for absence from the present sessions, which were sustained. Joseph Bryan a ruling Elder from the church of Mount Zion appeared and took a seat. The Rev. Jesse Stratton appeared in presbytery and having rendered satisfactory reasons for tardiness took his seat Presbytery had a recess until 3 Oclock. P.M. 413. Lexington, Friday, April 1st. 1831. 3 Oclock P.M. Presbytery met, resumed, and completed the unfinished business of the morning, viz, receiving reports on the state of religion. Mr. Cassells appeared; and having rendered satisfactory reasons for not coming earlier, took his seat. Mr. Francis R. Goulding, a graduate of the University of Georgia, was introduced to presbytery desiring to be taken under its care as a candidate for the gospel ministry. He was examined as to experimental acquaintance with religion and the motives which influenced him to desire the office of the gospel ministry: and presbytery having received satisfactory evidence of his good moral character, and of his being in the communion of the church, his examination was sustained as a part of trial preparatory to licensure. An Christus sit Deus? who assigned him as the theme of an exegesis, and Phillip: 2:6,7,8 the subject of a critical exercise to be delivered as early as practicable. The following resolution was offered which being read, was ordered to lie on the table for the present: viz: Resolved, that 414. it be commended to our churches not supplied with preachers of our own body to be cautious in employing as stated supplies members of other Presbyteries, who have not obtained permission to labor within our bounds. Mr. Theodor M. Dwight a candidate for licensure read a critical exercise on the subject assigned him at our last stated sessions which committed to Drs Brown and Cummins and Mr. Hoyt to report thereon tomorrow morning. He also read a lecture on the subject heretofore assigned him which was considered and sustained. Mr Dwight was directed to prepare for examination on the first eight chapters of the confession of Faith, and Isa. 35: 1. was assigned him as the subject of a popular discourse to be delivered at our semi-annual sessions. A call from the Presbyteryian Church in Macon for the ministerial labours of the Rev. Edwin Holt a member of the Presbytery of Elizabethtown, was read and considered. It was stated that Mr Holt expected in a short time to obtain a dismission from that Presbytery to connect himself with this body. It was therefore, resolved that said call lie on the 415. table till our semi-annual meeting. And Dr Church and Mr Hoyt were appointed a committee to address a letter to the church of Macon explaining the causes of this delay. The committee appointed to consider the petition of the church at Decatur, reported, and recommended that, that church receive the Rev. Arthur M. Mooney as a stated supply for the present; and it is further recommended, that a committee be appointed to address the session of that church advising them to receive the Rev. Mr. Mooney. Whereupon, Dr. Brown, J.W. Waddel and John S. Willson were appointed that committee, and the stated clerk was directed to furnish Mr. Mooney with a certificate of permission to labor within our bounds. The Presbytery proceeded to the examination of Mr Thomas Jackson a candidate for licensure on Theology and having made some progress adjourned to meet tomorrow morning at 8 Oclock. Concluded with prayer. Lexington, Saturday, April 2nd 1831. 8 Oclock A.M. The Presbytery met pursuant to adjournment and was 416. constituted with prayer. Members presented as on yesterday. The minutes of the last session were read. The committees appointed to examine the sessions books of the churches of Athens and Lexington reported, and the books were approved. The committee to whom was refered the critical exercise of Mr Dwight reported, and recommended that it be sustained as a part of trial preparatory to licensure. The Presbytery resumed and completed the examination of Mr Jackson on Theology which had been commenced on yesterday. The order of the day, that is, the subject of endowing of professorship in the Theological Seminary of the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia was taken up; And the following resolutions adopted. Resolved, That this Presbytery highly approve the efforts of the Synod to establish a Theological Seminary within its bounds, and that we most cordially recommended to the churches under our care to patronage this infant Institution. Resolved further, That in a particular manner we recommend, 417. to the members of our churches, and those friendly to its doctrines and discipline, to unite with the Presbytery of Georgia, so far at they may be willing in raising at least the sum of $25.000. to endow a professorship to be called the Georgia professorship and to be under the control of these presbyteries, and at any time liable to be withdrawn and devoted to an institution which may be establish in this state. Mr Matthew J. Caldwell a ruling elder from the church at Forsyth appeared and took a seat. A committee was appointed consisting of Dr. Church and Messrs Chamberlain, Newton and Lamar, to divise some plan for aiding the funds of the Seminary, and collecting books for the Library and Col. Joseph Henry Lamphin one of the Directors of the Seminary, was requested to act with the Committee. Mr John B. Smith, a candidate for licensure under our care, was examined in the Latin and Greek languages and read a discourse on the subject heretofore assigned him as parts of trial prior, to licensure which parts of trial were considered and sustained. Mr. Smith was directed to prepare for farther examination 418. on the first 12 chapters of the confession of Faith; and John I 1st 3rd inclusive was assigned him as the subject of a critical exercise to be declared at our semi-annual meeting. Mr Wingfield and the Rev. Mr. Scott had leave of absence from our remaining sessions. Presbytery had a recess until 2 Oclock P.M. Saturday, April 2nd 1831 2 Oclock P.M. Presbytery met. The Rev. Messrs Talmage & Waddel ministers and Messrs E.L. Newton and John Cunningham Elders, were appointed Commissioners to the next General Assembly. The Churches being called on for Commissioners funds, there was received from the church at Athens $10.00, from Decatur $7.25 from McDonough $4.00: and it is ordered that the churches which have not sent up their contributions to this fund, do so without delay, to Joseph Bryan Esqr. Tresurer of the Presbytery at Mount Lion. Mr. Finlay, a ruling elder from Nazareth Church appeared and took a seat. The following resolution was offered and adopted, viz, 419. Resolved, That the churches under our care be requested to take up collections annually, previous to our spring sessions, to delay the incidental expenses of presbytery, such as the salary of the stated clerk, travelling expenses of delegates to the General Assembly &c. and that this money be forwarded to Presbytery at our annual meetings and paid over to the Treasurer. The Committee appointed on the subject of three and four days meetings, reported, which report after being amended was adopted and is as follows, viz, 1. A few days meeting at Olney, Thyatira, Jackson co. to commence on Thursday before the 5th Sabbath in July, to be attended by Dr. Waddel and Messrs. McAlpin, Nelson, and Guillan. 2. A four day meeting in Butts co. near the Indian Spring, to commence on Thursday before the 5th Sabbath in July to be attended by Messrs. Chamberlain, Gamble, J.M. Waddel, and Patterson. 3. A four days meeting in Fayette co. near Fayetteville, to commence on Thursday before the 4th Sabbath in August to be attended by Messrs Carter, Alexander, Patton, and Mooney. 4. A few days meeting a Hopewell, Crawford co. to commence on Thursday before the 2nd Sabbath in September, to be attended 420. by Messrs Chamberlain, Wilson, J.W. Waddel, and J. C. Patterson. 5. A four days meeting at Nazareth, Hall co. to commence on Thursday before the 3rd Sabbath on August, and to be attended by Messrs, Guillan, McAlpin, Mooney and Wilson. 6. A three days meeting at Mount Zion, Hancock co. to commence on Friday evening before the 2nd Sabbath in May, to be attended by Drs Brown and Cummins. 7. A four days meeting at Bethany, Green co. to commence on Thursday before the 4th Sabbath in September, to be attended by Messrs Hoyt, Boggs, and Beman, and Drs Brown and Cummins. 8. A three days meeting at Greensborough, Green co to commence on Friday before the 1st Sabbath in May to be attended by Drs Cummins and Mr. Hoyt. 9. A three days meeting at Covington, Newton co, to commence on Friday before the 2nd Sabbath in May, to be attended by Messrs Richards and Patterson. 10. A four days meeting at McDonough, Henry co. to commence on Thursday before the 1st Sabbath in September to be attended by Messrs Gamble, J.W. Waddel, Carters, Patterson and Chamberlain. 421. 11. A few days meeting at Newhope, Madison co. to commence on Thursday evening before the 3d Sabbath in September, to be attended by Messrs, J.W. Waddel, Carter, and Dr Church. 12. A four days meeting at Athens Clark co. to commence on Thursday before the 3d Sabbath in May, to be attended by Messrs Hoyt, Patterson McAlphin, Holt, and Dr Church. 13. A four days meeting at Bethesda, Bibb co. to be attended by Messrs Patterson J.W. Waddel, Chamberlain, and Holt, and to commence on Thursday before the 1st Sabbath in July. 14. A four days meeting at Lincolnton, Lincoln, co. to commence on Thursday before the 2nd Sabbath in July, to be attended by Messrs Chamberlain, Cassells, J.W. Waddel, and Talmage. 15. A four days meeting at Newnan, Coveta co. to commence on Thursday before the 3d Sabbath in July to be attended by Messrs Alexander, Carter, Chamberlain and Mooney. 16. A few days meeting at Decatur, DeKalb co. to commence on Thursday before the 2nd Sabbath in August to be attended by J.W. Waddel, Mooney, Scott, Carter, and Patton. The Committee on the Narative of the State of religion within our bounds reported and the report being read was adopted. 422. The committee appointed to devise measures to aid the contingent fund of the Seminary reported and recommended that the plan of the 50 cents contribution recommended by the Synod be pursued by the ministers and elders in collecting funds, and that the money which may be collected be forwarded to Mrs Talmage of Augusta, as also books presented to the Library. The Presbytery resolved that it would hold its semi-annual meeting at Fairview Church, Gwinnett co. on Saturday before the 1st Sabbath in August at 11 Oclock, A.M. And it is ordered that the day be spent by the Presbytery in conjunction with the congregation which may be there assembled in prayer, exhortation and praise. It is also farther ordered that Mr. Hoyt preach the action sermon on the Sabbath and that Dr Church be his alternate it was resolved, that Saturday the Seventh of May be recommended to our churches as a day of humiliation, fasting, and prayer to Almighty God, and that each Church be earnestly requested to assemble on that day in their usual places of worship whether they have have a minister or not, and that they earnestly implore the outpouring of the Spirit of God on 423. our churches, and throughout our land. The committee formerly appointed to confer with the Presbytery of Georgia on the subject of endowing a professorship in the Seminary was continued. It was resolved, that the salary of the States Clerk be fixed for the present at the sum $30. pr annum. Waddel Temporary Clerk. The minutes of the last sessions were read and confirmed. The Rev. James Gamble appeared and having rendered satisfactory reasons for tardiness took his seat. Mr Samuel M Kay a ruling Elder from the Hebron church Franklin County appeared and took a seat. In accordance with the resolution of the Presbytery the remainder of the day was spent in prayer, praise, and exhortation with 426. the congregation. Presbytery concluded with prayer, and adjourned to meet in this place on Monday morning at 8 Oclock. Fairview Church, Monday 8th. August 1831. Presbytery met pursuant to adjournment and was constituted with prayers. Members present as on Saturday. A committee consisting of brethren Hoyt and Carter, was appointed to examine the minutes of the General Assembly and report whatever required the attention of this body at present contained therein, A letter from the Rev. John Boggs containing reasons for absence from the present sessions was read, and the reasons sustained, Thomas McGruder a candidate for licensure under our care requested by letter a dismission from this body with a view of connecting himself with the Presbytery of South Alabama. His request was granted and the Stated Clerk was directed to forward his dismission together with a statement of what parts of trial had been exhibited by Mr McGruder preparatory to licensure. A letter from the Rev. Joseph Y. Alexander rendering reasons 427. for absence from the present sessions was received and read and ordered to lie on the table. A communication from the Rev. Willard Preston enclosing credentials was read and refered to a committee consisting of the Messrs, Hoyt and Newton. Mr Paul a ruling Elder from the church of Washington, and Seth Cason from the Church of Hopewell, Crawford, co. appeared and took seats. Absentees from our last stated sessions rendered reasons which were considered satisfactory. The committee to which was refered the subject of establishing a professorship in the Theological Seminary at Columbia, not being prepared to report was continued. On inquiry into what had been done towards aiding the contingent fund of the seminary it was ascertained that thirty dollars had been received from the congregation of Union, Oglethorpe County: and that one volume had been forwarded for the Library by the Rev. Mr Harrison Francis Goulding and Theodore M. Dwight candidates for licensure being absent their trials were continued, as were also those of L. B. Smith. 428. Mr E.L. Newton one of the delegates to the last General Assembly made the usual report. On motion, resolved, that whereas a majority of the churches have failed to comply with the resolution adopted at our last Annual Meeting in relation to commissioners fund, that the churches which have contributed, have their money back provided they apply for it. A complaint of Mr Samuel Hillhouse, a ruling Elder of the Church of Nazareth, Hall, co. against the session of said Church for mal-practice in office, was read and refered to a committee consisting of Messrs Stratton, Scott, and Mayne. The committee to when was refered the communication and other papers of the Rev. Mr. Preston made a report which being read was adopted and is as follows: to wit: That they have examined a letter and certain papers forwarded to this Presbytery be the Rev. Millard Preston, and that they find his testimonials, especially those from the Rev. Dr Green, and the late Dr Wilson of Philadelphia highly flattering. But in as much as Mr Preston has lost the dismission, which he formerly received from a consociation in the North the way is not prepared to his regularly 429. connecting himself with this Presbytery. Therefore, the committee recommend that a committee be appointed to correspond with Mr Preston and state to him the reasons why he cannot be received at this time, and advise him to apply to the Ecclesiastical body to which he belongs and obtain another regular dismission, when the way will be open for his reception as a member of this body. Whereupon Messrs, Hoyt and Newton were appointed that committee. The committee to whom was refered the complaint of Mr Samuel Hillhouse against the session of Nazareth Church, reported which report being read was adopted and is as follows: towit; that the business is informal , therefore the committee an of opinion otherwise, that the matter should be refered back to the church session, with an order to bring it to a close in a constitutional manner: and for this purpose a moderator of session be appointed by the Presbytery and the session directed to meet and issue the case accordingly. Whereupon, the Rev. Robert McAlpin was appointed that Moderator. Mr. McMullin obtained leave of absence from the remainder of our present sessions. The Rev. Edwin Holt of the Presbytery of Elizabethtown and the Rev. Henry Safford of the Presbytery of Buffalo presented 430. regular dismission from the presbyteries to connect themselves with this body, which were read and they took their seats accordingly as members. A call from the church in Macon for the ministerial labours of the Rev. Mr. Holt which was laid on the table at our annual meeting to give Mr Holt an opportunity of obtaining a dismission from the Presbytery of Elizabethtown, and connecting himself with this, was now presented and by him accepted. On motion it was ordered that the Saturday before the third Sabbath in November be set apart for the installation as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Macon, and that Dr Church preach the sermon, and Mr. Talmage be his alternate: that Dr Brown deliver the charge to Mr. Holt and Mr Scott be his alternate, and Mr McAlpin deliver the charge to the people and Mr. Hoyt be his alternate. Presbytery had a recess untill 2 Oclock P.M. After recess the Presbytery met. The Rev. Edwin Dyer of the Baptist Church being present was invited and took a seat as a correspondent. John B. Smith a candidate for licensure under our care, read a 431. critical exercise on the subject heretofore assigned him which was refered to a committee consisting of Messrs Richard and Carter to report as early as practicable. The Rev. Jonathon Leavitt of the Windsor Association requested permission to labor within our bounds. After receiving satisfactory evidence of this good and regular standing, it was ordered that a certificate of permission and recommendation be granted according to Mr Leavitts request to labor within the bound of this presbytery. Thomas Jackson a candidate for licensure not being present it was suggested that farther parts of trial should be assigned: whereupon he was directed to prepare a critical exercise on Rom 9: 3d to be delivered at our annual meeting. The farther trials of Messrs Johnston & Montgomery candidates for licensure were at their own request suspended till after their graduation. The Rev. Dr. Waddel through the Rev. Mr. Hoyt requested a dismission to join the Presbytery of South Carolina: whereupon the stated clerk was directed to forward a dismission to Dr Waddel. Presbytery had a recess for one hour and an half. After recess the Presbytery met and entered upon the examination of Mr John B. Smith on the first twelve chapters of 432. of the Confession of Faith and after having continued the examination some time, the same chapters together with four additional chapters were assigned him as parts of trial to be prepared at our annual sessions and John 1: 1.2,3. verses as the subject of a critical exercise. The following appointments for three and four days meetings were made: towit; 1. William Moderwel who has been for sometime suspended from the exercise of the gospel ministry on a charge of intemperance, was called up, and after some time spent in committee of the whole, it was on motion, resolved, that the brethern, Chamberlain, Hoyt, and Col. Lumpkin, be a committee to confer affectionately, and faithfully with Mr Moderwel on his present situation, and to state to him the views of the Presbytery respecting it: and also to collect all possible facts respecting his conduct to be exhibited at our 435. next annual meeting, so that this body may be prepared for a final discussion in his case. Resolved, That the Stated Clerk, be authorized to call on the former stated clerks of this body, for all the papers and documents which may be in their posession belonging to presbytery. On motion, resolved, that a committee be appointed consisting of Messrs Gamble, Wilson, Talmage, Lumpkin, Bryan, and Maj: Walker to submit to this presbytery at its annual sessions, a plan of division defining the boundaries of each Presbytery should this body at that time deem a division proper. The clerk in connexion with William B. Richards, was appointed to make out a statistical report ot be sent up to the next meeting of the Synod of South Carolina & Georgia The Rev. Arthur M. Mooney, by the hands of the Rev. James Gamble, presented a regular dismission from the Presbytery of South Carolina, with the request that he be received, as a member of this body. Whereupon it was resolved that his request be granted, and that the clerk furnish Mr Mooney with a certified copy of the minute. A letter was received from the Rev. Hampden C. Carter giving an account of the organization a Presbyterian 439. Presbyterian Church in Heard County, consisting of twelve members and called Providence. Whereupon it was resolved that this be recognized as on the churches belonging to this body. Rev. Thomas F. Scott made a verbal report of a newly organized Church in Hamilton, Harris County, consisting of six members and called the Hamilton Church. A communication was received from the Rev. Dr Goulding assigning reasons for absence from our present sessions which were sustained. Mr. McAlpin reported that he had attended to the duty assigned him at the last semi-annual meeting of Presbytery and that he met the session of Nazareth Church and that the business refered to its decision had been amicably adjusted- Resolved, That it be the orders of the day for tomorrow morning at 9 Oclock to receive statistical reports from the churches and also reports on the state of religion; and Mr Wilson and Mr Scott were appointed a committee to prepare the general statistical report; and Mr Talmage, Mr Cassells and Dr Alexander 445. Alexander a committee to write the narrative of the state of religion within our bounds to be presented to the next General Assembly: and the same committee was directed to prepared a report on the subject of the education of poor and pious youth for the gospel ministry to be laid before the Board of Education of the General Assembly. Mr. J.M. Dwight a candidate for licensure and now a member of the Theological Seminary through the Rev. Mr. Hoyt requested the advice of Presbytery as to his future course. Consideration defered until tomorrow. Mr. Patton, a licentiate under our care appeared and rendered reasons for tardiness. The Rev. Willard Preston, requested leave through the Rev. Mr. Hoyt to withdraw the application made at our last stated meeting to connect himself with this body in consequence of having removed out of our bounds, which request was granted, and the papers belonging to Mr Preston, was directed to be returned. The Rev. William Guillin, reported a church organized by himself in Clarksville Habersham County consisting of seven members and having one ruling elder which was taken under the care of Presbytery. Presbytery had a recess until half past 7 Oclock P.M. Half past 7 oclock P.M. Presbytery met. Mr McAmy a ruling elder from the Church of Monticello appeared and took a seat 449. The following preamble and resolutions were read and adopted viz. Whereas the Sovereign Disponer of all events, has seen proper to afflict this Presbytery and the churches under its care by the removed by death of our much respected and numerated father the Rev. Francis Cummins D.D. therefore, Restored, That this Presbytery do sympathize with the bereaved relatives of the deceased and as a token of respect for his memory, that the senior member of this body be requested to preach a funeral sermon before this Presbytery next Sabbath afternoon: To this request the Rev. Dr Brown the senior member signified his assent. Mr N. H. Hines a ruling elder from the church of Milledgeville, Mr Henderson a ruling elder from Harmony and Mr McBryde a ruling elder from the church of Fayetteville appeared and took seats. Through the Rev. Nathan Hoyt, the Moderator a reference from the session of the church in Athens, was presented to Presbytery. James C. Edwards a member of that church was accused upon public [?], and requested an investigation upon the 450. the following charges.- Criminal intercourse and other improprieties of conduct with Mrs A.L. Walker. A charge was given by the Moderator to the Presbytery to recollect and regard their high character as judges in a court of Jesus Christ. The minutes of the session relative to the trial, so, far as it proceeded, and the evidence submitted to that judicatory were presented and read. And after serious consideration and due deliberation had thereon and after prayer to God for light and direction: This Presbytery are of opinion that the first part of the charge; viz; Criminal conduct- by which it is supposed is meant actual adultry with Mrs A.L. Walker has not been fully sustained; but that the second part: viz, other improprieties of conduct- has been established by satisfactory evidence. Whereupon, Presbytery aid, and hereby Do Adjudge that the said James C. Edwards be suspended from the sealing ordinances of the gospel, for the term of twelve months from this date after which he may be restored upon confession of his fault and giving satisfactory evidence of repentance. 451. Presbytery adjourned till half past 8Oclock tomorrow morning- Concluded with prayer Madison, Morgan, co. Friday. March 30th 1832. Half past 8 Oclock A.M. Presbytery met. Members present as on yesterday. Constituted with prayer. The minutes of the last session were read. The committee appointed to examine the session books of the churches of Forsyth, Thyatira, Augusta, Macon, Nazareth, Lexington, Washington, NewLebanon, Fairview, Mount-Zion, and Gainsville, reported and the books were approved. Presbytery proceeded to the order of the day; viz, receiving reports of the state of religion, and statistical reports from the churches. These reports were refered to their appropriate committees to prepare the general reports on these subjects. Mr Carter and Dr Alexander were appointed a committee to examine the minutes of the last General Assembly. Mr. Thomas Jackson, a candidate for licensure, assigned reasons by letter for not attending our present meeting which were sustained. 452. The Rev. Samuel K. Talmage a commissioner to the last General Assembly from this Presbytery, reported that he had complyed and had attended the sessions of that body. Mr. McAlpin and Dr Alexander were appointed a committee to examine the records of the session of Greensborough. The Rev. Isaac W. Waddel appeared and rendered satisfactory reasons for not coming sooner and took his seat. The committee appointed to examine the records of the session of Greensborough, reported, and the book was approved- The following resolution was read and adopted, Resolved, That we deeply regret the present unfortunate controversy which exists in a part of the Presbyterian church relative to the proper mode of conducting domestick missions, and that our delegates to the next General Assembly be and they are hereby instructed to use their influence in that body to allay that controversy, and to do all in their power, to restore harmony among the brethern- The case of the Rev. William Moderwel was called up and made the order of the day for half past three Oclock this evening to which time the Presbytery had recess. 453. 3 Oclock P.M. March 30th 1832. The Presbytery met. Members present as in the morning. The Committees appointed to examine the records of the churches of Milledgeville, LaGrange & Mount Zion reported and the records were approved. Mr. John Hitton a ruling elder from the church at Bethany appeared and took a seat. The hour having arrived, the Presbytery proceeded to the order of the day the consideration of the Rev. William Moderwels case who for the crime on intemperance was suspended from the exercise of the gospel ministry in the year 1826. The Moderator, having charged the judicatory to remember their character as a court of Jesus Christ, and to have a single eye to the glory of God, Mr Moderwel was heard with regard to his view and feelings in the matter and his desire to be restored to the ministerial office. It did not appear from the best evidence, which could be obtained that Mr Moderwel had been guilty of any improprieties of conduct during the last 12 or 15 months which would present his restoration, and the Presbytery having satisfactory 252. satisfactory grounds to believe that he has sincerely repented of this sin and reformed his life: it was moved and seconded that the suspension be removed, and that he be restored to good standing on the church and the holy ministry: And the question being taken on this motion by calling the roll it was decided in the affirmative; 28 members voting in favor of his restoration-2 against it- and 8 being excused voting for reasons deemed sufficient by the Presbytery. The Rev. Dr. Brown at the request of the Moderator communicated to Mr M in the presence of the Presbytery its decision: and having affectionately admonished and encouraged him, he implored the Divine blessing on the act of the Presbytery. The right hand of fellowship being given, Mr. Moderwel took his seat as a member. The Rev. Dr. McDowell, Agent for the Theological Seminary being present, preceded at the request of Presbytery to give some account of the present prosperity and future prospects of that institution. On motion the consideration of this subject was refered to a committee consisting of Col. Lumpkin Mr Bryan & Mr Nesbit, to prepare a minute & report tomorrow. 455. The Committee to whom was refered the Exegesis, and Critical Exercise of Francis Goulding reported, and the pieces were sustained as parts of trial prior to licensure. The Rev. Benjamin Borrough of the 1st Presbytery of NewYork, Mr John Baker a licentiate of the Presbytery of Georgia and the Rev. John L. Kenneday of the Presbytery of South Carolina, severally requested and obtained permission to labor within our bounds. Presbytery concluded with prayer, and adjourned to meet tomorrow morning at half past 8 Oclock. Madison Saturday March 31st. 1832. The Presbytery met according to adjournment. Members present as on yesterday. Constituted with prayer. The minutes of the last session were read. Presbytery proceeded to assign as farther parts of trial to Mr Francis Goulding Eph. 2:8. the subject of a sermon: and Rom. 9:1-13. the subject of a lecture to be delivered prior to licensure. A request was received from the churches of Fayetteville 456. and Lebulon for the ordination of Mr William K. Patton a licentiate under our care, as an evangelist. Whereupon it was, resolved that Acts 14.22, be assigned him as the subject of a sermon to be delivered prior to ordination. The Committee to whom was refered the subject of the Theological Seminary made the following report, which was read and adopted. The Committee on the Theological Seminary report that they have attended to this subject and after an interview with the Agent of the seminary would subject the following resolutions. 1. Resolved That the Presbytery have heard with deep interest and heart felt gratitude of the prosperous state of their Theological Seminary and they express their gratitude to the Great Head of the Church for his smiles on that infant institution they would comment it most earnestly to the prayers and patronage of their churches. 2. Resolved. That they hail with satisfaction the effort of the Agent of the Synod to endow a professorship in this State, and affectionately recommind him and his object- to 457. all our churches, and pledge ourselves to use all proper [?] in our power to effect its accomplishment as spedily as possible. 3. Resolved. That to facilitate the operations of the Synods Agent, it be recommended to the individuals here present, who may feel themselves able to do something for the endowment of a professorship on the Seminary, and who have not yet subscribed to embrace the opportunity of subscribing to-day. In reference to the contingent fund for the present year the Committee feel that it is of special importance something be done in this matter as promptly and efficiently as possible. The present wants of the seminary are pressing, and to meet these wants there is no resource but the charity of the church. They would therefore recommend that this Presbytery attempt to raise at least the sum of $750. And as the interests and even the very existence of the Seminary under God, defend upon prompt and efficient efficient efforts to meet the contingent expense the committee recommend as a plan for raising something in this presbytery, that each church in the order of the roll be called on, and be inequisted to say whether anything 458. and if any thing what amount can be pledged to this object. The Committee to whom was refered the subject of dividing the presbytery were dismissed from the farther consideration of the matter. The Churches were called on through their delegated to say what they would do for the contingent fund of the seminary. Dr. Church appeared and rendered reasons for tardiness and took his seat. The Committee appointed to prepare a narrative of the state of religion presented their report which was adopted. The same Committee also made their report on the subject of Education which was read and adopted. The Committee appointed to examine the Session book of the church at Lincolnton, reported, and it was recommended that the both be returned with directions to transcribe and correct it which was adopted. It is ordered that the ordination of Mr. Patton take place at our semi-annual meeting, provided his parts of trial be sustained, and that Mr Gamble preach the 459. sermon and Mr McAlpin be his alternate-that Mr. Scott deliver the charge and Mr. Mooney be his alternate. The Committee to whom was refered the circular from the Synod of NewYork, were discharged from the farther consideration of the subject. Presbytery had a recess till half past two Oclock P.M. Madison 31st March 1832. Half past 2 Oclock. P.M. Presbytery met. Mr. John W. Reid was introduced as desiring to be received under our care as a candidate for licensure. Presbytery having satisfactory evidence of his good moral character and of his being in the communion of the Church; proceeded to examine him on the subject of experimental religion and the motives inducing him to desire the office of the gospel ministry. Presbytery sustained the examination and assigned him Matt. 15:9 the subject of a critical exercise, and Eritpena seelatonun sempiterna, the subject of an exegesis, to be delivered as parts of trial prior to licensure. A reference from the church of Bethesda was taken up and the following resolution adopted, towit, 460. Resolved, That we concur, with the synod of South Carolina and Georgia, and with the Senate of the last Legislature of this State, that it is inexpedient to authorize coulered persons to hold religious meetings- and we therefore recommend to the church at Bethesda to refuse permission to George Loveless a coloured man to preach or exhort in public. The following resolution was offered and adopted, towit, Resolved, That this Presbytery appoint a committee to draw up a plan for the formation of a foreign Missionary Society to be either independent on auxiliary to some similar institution and that this committee report on the same at our semiannual meeting. Whereupon Col. Lumpkin, and the Rev. Messrs Cassells and Talmage were appointed that committee. The following preamble and resolution was adopted; Believing that it is highly important to the interests of the Presbyterian church in the south, that the Charleston Observer should be sustained and apperehending that it may be discontinued for want of patronage: Therefore, Resolved, that this Presbytery highly appreciate the value of said paper, and 461. that the ministers and elders within our bounds be recommended to use their influence to procure for it subscribers in their respective neighbourhoods. Whereas we believe the role of infant Baptism to be fully authorized in the word of God, and that it is the sacred and the solomn duty of every believing parent in connexion with the visible Church of Christ to dedicate his infant offspring to God in this precious ordinance, and whereas many persons members of our churches, greatly need, and desire information on the subject, that they may be enabled and included to do their duty in this respect. 1. Therefore be it resolved, That something containing a just statement of the subject and mode of baptism should be published under the sanction and authority of this Presbytery are circulated amongst our people- 2. Resolved, that Dr. Goulding be and he is hereby appointed to prepare a tract on this subject, which shall be presented to Presbytery at its semi-annual meeting This tract shall 1st. be seriptual- 2nd Short- 3d Methodical- 4 Easy to be understood- 5. Free from sectarial abuse. 462. 6th. Conciliating- And it is ordered that the stated clerk furnish Dr. Goulding with a copy of these resolutions- Mr. Richards presented a petition from divers persons members of the church of Bethel (Jasper) praying to be set off and organized as a separate church- the prayer of the petition was granted and Friday before the 4 Sabbath in May was appointed for the commencement of a meeting for this purpose, and brethern Richards Chamberlain and Patterson were directed to attend- The committee appointed to examine the minutes of the General Assembly reported that they had examined said minutes and find nothing requiring the attention of this Presbytery, which report was adopted. Presbytery proceeded to appoint the following commissioners to the General Assembly - Ministers Nathan Hoyt, John Wilson and James Gamble - Elders Joseph H. Lumpkin and Matthew Robinson - The Rev. R. Chamberlain - J. W. Waddel and Edwin Holt were appointed alternates - Resolved, That the Treasurer after paying the incidental expenses of the Presbytery, be authorized to pay the balance of the funds in his hands to the draft of the commissioners or Commisioners who may attend the General Assmbly. Resolved that the Rev. Mr. Hyers a licentiate of the Baptist Church and Agent of the Geo. Religious Tract Society, who is travelling in this state in prosecution of the objects of that society be affectionately recommended with this important objects to the attention of the churches within our bounds. The Presbytery resolved to hold its semi-annual meeting at Newnan, Coweta County on Saturday the 4th day of August at 11 Oclock A.M. The trials of Mr. John B. Smith were continued and 465. he was directed to be prepared to exhibit them at our semiannual sessions. Presbytery then had a recess until 3 Oclock. P.M. Newnan 3. Oclock P.M. Presbytery met. Messrs Moderwel and Gamble appeared, rendered reasons for tardiness and took their seats. Elder James Harris from the Church at LaGrange 467. appeared and took his seat. The minutes of the annual meeting were read and corrected and confirmed. Mr Chamberlain appeared, rendered reasons for tardiness and took his. Mr Gamble rendered reasons for absence from the Annual Meeting which were sustained. Elder Elijah Reider from the Church at Greenville appeared and took his seat. Mr. Richards reported the church ordered by the last Presbytery, had been organized with 19 members, called Hopewell which was taken under the care of this Presbytery John Brownfield one of the Ruling Elders of that church being present took a seat as a member of this body. Mr. Thomas Jackson a candidate for licensure read a critical exercise from Rom. 9:3 which was committed to Messrs Moderwel and Richards. He was also examined in Chapters 12- 24. of the Confession of Faith which was sustained as a part of trial. Presbytery then then assigned him Psalm 133 as a subject of a Lecture, and Cur est non contuntece Judaei cum Samaitanis, as the subject of an Exegesis, and Rom. 468. 1:16 for a sermon and also the remainder of the confession of Faith as parts of trial to be exhibited hereafter. John W. Reid, a candidate for licensure read a critical exercise from Matt 15:9. which was committed to Mr. Alexander and Mr. Turk. He also read an Exegesis from the subject heretofore assigned him which was committed to Messrs Gamble and Guillin. Presbytery proceeded to examine William K. Patton on experimental religion, Natural Philosophy, Astronomy, Natural and Revealed Theology. Here the examination was suspended, and Presbytery had a recess until 8 Oclock. P.M. Newnan, Saturday 8 Oclock P.M. Presbytery met and proceeded with the examination of Mr. Patton upon Theology, Church History and Church Government, which examination was sustained, as part of trial preparatory to his ordination- It was made the order of the day for half past nine Oclock on Monday morning to hear Mr Pattons trial sermon- Rev. Jesse Stratton applied through Mr Gamble 469. for a dismission to join the Presbytery of South Alabama which was granted. Rev. J.W. Waddel applied by letter for a dismission to join the Presbytery of South Carolina, which was also granted, and the Clerk is directed to forward these dismissions. Elder Samuel Groves from NewHope, appeared and took a seat. Presbytery then adjourned until sun-rise on Monday morning. Concluded with prayer. Newnan, sun-rise Monday 6th August 1832. Presbytery met and was constituted with prayer. Members present as on Saturday. The minutes of the last sessions were read. Messrs John S. Wilson and Thomas H. Scott were appointed a committee to prepare a narrative of the state of religion, to be presented at our next meeting and it is ordered that the churches forward their reports to the states clerk as soon as possible. John B. Smith a candidate for licensure read a lecture from John 1:13. 14. which was committed to Messrs Chamberlain and Cunningham. 470. Elder Henry J. Dawson asked and obtained leave of absence. Presbytery had recess until 8 Oclock A.M. Newnan Monday 8 Oclock A.M. Presbytery met and proceeded to examine John B Smith on the first sixteen chapters of the Confession of Faith which examination was sustained as a part of trial. Rom. 4:7 was assigned Mr. Smith as the subject of a sermon to be exhibited at the annual meeting and he was directed to prepare for examination on the usual subjects preparatory to licensure. Elder William Hodge from the Church at Danielsville appeared and took a seat. The Committee to whom was refered the Critical Exercise of Mr. Jackson reported and the exercise was sustained The committees to whom were refered the Exegesis and Critical Exercise of Mr Reid reported and the prices were sustained. Presbytery assigned Mr. Reid Psalm 139: 7-12. as the subject of a lecture, and Pro. 14:9 first clause, as the subject of a sermon to be delivered at the next meeting. 471. the hour having arrived Presbytery proceeded to the order of the day when Mr. Patton delivered a sermon from the subject previously assigned him which was considered and sustained. All his parts of trial having now been sustained, Presbytery resolved to proceed immediately to his ordination. Mr Gamble preached an appropriate sermon from Eccl. 12:10 The preachers sought to find out acceptable words. -the Moderator presided and Mr Patton having satisfactorily answered the questions proposed on such occasions was solemnly set apart and ordained by prayer and the imposition of the hands of the Presbytery, to the gospel ministry. Mr Scott delivered a charge to the newly ordained Evangelist, who having received the right hand of fellowship took his seat as a member of Presbytery. Presbytery then had a recess until 3 Oclock. P.M. Newnan Monday 3 Oclock. P.M. Presbytery met. Elder James Harris obtained leave of absence. The Committee to whom was refered the lecture of Mr Smith reported and it was sustained as part of trial. 473. Resolved, That the next annual meeting be held in Decatur DeKalb Co. on Saturday before the first Sabbath in April 1833. Elder Samuel Groves presented a supplication from the NewHope church whereupon Presbytery ordered that Rev. Messrs Church McAlpin, Guillin and Cassells hold a few days meeting at that church commencing on Thursday before the 3d Sabbath in September. Resolved, that Presbytery recommend to the churches under their care to set apart and observe Saturday before the third Sabbath in September as a day of fasting humiliation and prayer in view of the languishing state of the churches, and of the judgements of God which are now visiting the churches, and the land: That those who have ministers have public worship, and those who have not meet at their churches for prayers. In compliance with a petition from several person in Columbia County, Presbytery appointed a three days meeting at Bethel in that County to commence on Friday before the 5th Sabbath in September, to be conducted 473. by Messrs Talmage, Moderwel and Cassells, and Mr John Y. Kenneday is likewise requested to attend. Resolved, That the Stated Clerk be directed to publish so much of the minutes as are of public importance, as speedily as possibly in the Charleston Observer. Presbytery then adjourned to meet in the city of Augusta on Wednesday evening before the 3d Sabbath in November at Candle lighting, Concluded with prayer Singing and the Apostolical benediction. Patterson Robert McAlpin. Edwin Holt, Samuel J. Cassells, H.C. Carter And the elders, E.L. Newton from Athens John Cunningham 474. from Greensboro Lock [?] from Washington, Dr. Pond from Lexington, William J. Hobby from Augusta, and Samuel Dowse from the Presbyterian Church of Burke. The minutes of the last session were read. Congregational reports being called for it appeared that the following Churches had not sent up any reports- towit, Bethel (Jasper) Bethen Morgan, Concord, Columbus, Covington, Danielsville, Eatonton, Ephesus, Gainsville, Greenville, Harmony, Hickory, Grove, Hebron, Jackson, Lexington, Lincolnton, Madison, Mendon, Milledgeville, Mount Zion, McDonough, New Hope, NewLebanon, Oakgrove, Philadelphia, Sandy Creek, Smyrna, South Liberty, Thyatira, Union. The Church at Washington presented a call for the ministerial services of the Rev. Samuel J. Cassells, which was by Presbytery presented and by him accepted. It is ordered that his installation take place on Saturday the 24th Instant in the Presbyterian Church at Washington: and that Brother Hoyt preach the installation sermon, and Brother Beman be his alternate, Dr Church preside and give the charge and Dr. Brown be his alternate - that Brother Talmage 475. give the charge to the people. and Brother Boggs be his alternate. The Churches of Nazareth, Gainsville and Concord, presented by permission of Presbytery a call to H.C. Carter to become their pastor, which was by him accepted and it is directed that Brother Carters installation take place at Gainsville, Hall Co on the second Saturday in January 1833. and that John S. Wilson preach the installation sermon, and Brother Guillin be his alternate- that Brother Hoyt, preside and give the charge to his pastor, and Brother McAlpin be his alternate, and that Dr. Church give the charge to the people, and Brother Cassells be his alternate. Mr. Francis Goulding a candidate for licensure read a lecture on the subject heretofore assigned him, which was committed to Messrs Hoyt and Cunningham. Presbytery adjourned to meet tomorrow morning at 9 Oclock. Concluded with Prayer. 476. Augusta 15th November 1832. 9. Oclock A.M. Presbytery met according to adjournment and was constituted with prayer. Members present as on yesterday. The minutes of the last session were read. Mr Robter Fleming a ruling Elder from the church at Lincolnton appeared and took a seat. A communication from Mr. John W. Reid was received giving reasons for absence from our present sessions which was sustained and his trials continued until our annual meeting. A communication was received from divers persons residing in Columbia County praying the organization of a church to be called Bethel: The prayers of the petition was granted and the brethern Moderwel, Reid, and Talmage were directed to attend to this duty on Saturday preceeding the first Sabbath in December next. The committee appointed to prepare a narrative of the state of religion within our bounds made a report, which, after being considering was committed to the same committee to be corrected and amended. 477. The Rev. Joseph C. Stiles and the Rev. Dennis M. Winston requested dismissions to join the Presbytery of Georgia. The requests were granted and they were accordingly dismissed. The Rev. Professor Goulding presented the Essay which he had been requested to prepare on the subjects of Baptism: and it was refered to a committee consisting of Messrs Hoyt, Cassells, and McAlpin. Messrs Talmage and Scott were nominated commissioners to the next General Assembly and Messrs Wilson and Cassell, their alternates. Elders E.L. Newton and John Cunningham by delegates to the same Assembly. Presbytery there had a recess to meet at the case of the Moderator. August Nov. 15. 1832. Quarter before 7. Oclock P.M. Presbytery met at the call of the chair. Members present as in the morning with Dr. Brown who now appeared and rendered satisfactory reasons for tardiness and took his seat. The committee to whom had been refered the Lecture of Francis Goulding reported and the part of trial was sustained. 478. The committee on the Essay of Dr. Goulding on the Mode and subjects of Baptism presented their report, which was accepted and adopted and is as follows: The committee to whom was refered the treatise of Dr Goulding on the subject of Baptism beg leave to report: that they approve of said treatise and they recommend its early publication. Whereupon the Presbytery adopted the following resolution: Resolved, that the brethern Cassells and Cunningham he and they are hereby appointed a committee with plenery powers to contract for the publishing the Essay; and should any expense be incured in this matter the members of this presbytery hereby pledge themselves to defray such expense. The committee on the Narrative of the State of Religion presented their report which was adopted. The Presbytery assigned J.F. Montgomery a candidate for licensure under our care 1 Cor. 1:18-25 inclusive as the subject of a critical exercise, and An lex abrogatum sil adventu Christi. the subject of an exegesis Mr. Daniel Ingles a member of the senior class in Franklin College, and in the communion of the church. as- 479. in Athens, was introduced to Presbytery and desired and desired be taken under our care as a candidate for the gospel ministry. Mr. Ingles was examined on experimental religion and the motives which induced him to desire to enter the sacred office. These examinations were sustained and Presbytery assigned him the first ten chapters of the Confession of Faith to prepare for examination at our annual meeting. Presbytery adjourned to meet at the call of the Moderator. Concluded with prayer- August Nov. 16. 1832. Decatur before 7 Oclock. P.M. Presbytery met and was constituted with prayer. Members present as on yesterday together with William Guillin who now appeared and rendered reasons for tardiness and took his seat. Dr Goulding requested a dismission from this body to join the Presbytery of Harmony; his request granted and he was dismissed. Francis Goulding also requested a dismission to put himself under the care of the Charleston Union Presbytery: 480. his request was granted. The Presbytery recinded the resolution adopted at Newnan in relation to the annual meeting, and resolved to meet at Decatur in the last Saturday in March at 11 Oclock A.M. concluded with singing prayer and the Apostilic Benediction and adjourned till the annual meeting. Mooney and Chamberlain, & Levi Willard, to preange the services of the sanctuary during the present sessions. The minutes of the last sessions were read and confirmed. All communications & addressed to this body were called for & read: of which the following disposition was made: viz 1. A communication was presented by Mr. John Baker, a licentiate of the Presbytery of Georgia, containg his dismission from that body to put himself under the care of this Presbytery. Mr. was accordingly received under our care as a probationer for the holy ministry. 2. A letter was received from the Rev. Henry Reid, assigning reasons for absence from our present sessions which were sustained. 3. A communication from the Rev. Dr. Goulding was read and the matter to which it refered, namely his essay on the mode and subjects of Baptisms, was ordered to be put on the docket. 4 A letter from the Rev. Carlisle P. Beman, requesting a disolution of the pastoral relation between himself & the Church of South Liberty was also read put on the docket 483. A resolution in relation to E.S. Hopping a licentiate under our care was laid on the table and consideration defered. Dr. Brown, Dr Church, John S. Wilson, Samuel J. Cassells, and H. C. Carter severally rendered satisfactory reasons for absence from our semi-annual sessions. Dr. Brown, Mr. Moderwel & Mr. Gillespie were appointed a committee to prepare a narrative of the state of religion within our bounds to be laid before the next General Assembly. The receiving statistical reports, and reports on the state of religion, was made the order of the day for Monday morning next at 9 Oclock. Dr Church Mr Cassells, and Mr. Bryan were appointed a committee to prepare a report on the subject of Education to be laid before the Board of Education of the General Assembly. The Rev. John S. Wilson and James C. Patterson were appointed a committee to examine the minutes of the last General Assembly. and report what matters contained therein may demand the attention of this body. during the present sessions. Mr. Thomas Jackson a candidate for licensure under our care, and not being present his trials were continued until our 484. semi-annual sessions. Mr John W. Reid, a candidate for licensure, read a lecture on the subject heretofore assigned him, which was committed to Dr Brown and Mr Scott to report as soon as practicable. The committee appointed to make arrangements for preaching during the present sessions made their report which was accepted. The committee to whom was refered the subject of foreign missions at our last annual meeting, made a report which was accepted and the consideration defered for the present. Mr. Moderwel reported that the church ordered to be organized in Columbia County at our last states sessions had been so organized, and requested to be taken under the care of the presbytery. Mr. John W. Reid an Elder from said church being present took a seat as a member of this body. The Rev. John Boggs by letter requested a dismission from this presbytery to join the presbytery of South Carolina, which request was granted and the Clerk was directed to forward him a dismission. 485. A committee of four consisting of Dr. Brown and Messrs Gamble Willard and Reid, was appointed to take into consideration the expedience of petitioning the synod of South Carolina & Georgia at its next meeting to divide the presbytery of Hopewell and report before the close of the present sessions. Elder David Rounceville from the church in Athens, and Elder James Scott from the church in Zebulon appeared & took seats. Mr. Daniel Ingles a candidate for licensure, was examined on the first ten chapters of the Confession of Faith which examination was sustained as a part of trial before licensure and the candidate was directed to prepare for examination on the remaining chapters of the confession of Faith at our semiannual meeting. The Rev William K. Patton appeared and having rendered reasons for tardiness took his seat. Mr. Chamberlain, Mr. Carter and Mr. Bryan were appointed a committee to prepare a report on the subject of Missions, to be presented to the Board of Missions of the General Assembly. 486. Elder John Brownfield from Hopewell (Jasper) and Elder James Mayne from Alcovia appeared and took seats. Concluded with prayer; and adjourned till Monday morning 8 Oclock. Decatur, DeKalb. A petition from divers individuals residing in Cherokee praying for ministerial aid, was read and on motion refered to the Board of missions of the Domestic Missionary Society. Mr Chamberlain and Mr. Willard were appointed a committee to audit the accounts of the Treasurer of this presbytery. To Mr Daniel Ingles, as parts of trial prior to licensure the following subjects were assigned; towit, Gal. 1:16 latter clause, the subject of a popular discourse; Psalm. 487. 2:6_12 inclusive subject of a lecture; 1. Tim. 3:16-first clause subject critical exercise- And Anna Baptisma Johannis Christianun sit. the subject of an exegesis. The committee to whom was refered the subject of the division of Presbytery made their report which was accepted and ordered to be put on the docket. Mr. Alexander and Mr. Scott were appointed a committee to prepare the general statistical report. The committee to whom was referd the records of the session of Washington reported and the book was approved. Satisfactory information was afforded Presbytery that the installation of the Rev. Samuel J. Cassells to place according to the direction of Presbytery as pastor of the church of Washington and that the brethern designated to perform that duty attended. The Presbytery was informed that the installation of the Rev H. C. Carter as pastor of the united churches of Gainsville, 489. Nazareth and Concord did not take place being providentially presented. At the request of Mr. Carter and for reasons which he assigned, said installation was indefinitely postponed. The Presbytery had a recess to attend the annual meeting of the Georgia Domestic Missionary Society. The Presbytery met and proceeded to business. Messrs Theodore M. Dwight John B. Smith and John W. Reid, candidates for the licensure under our care were severally examined on the subjects directed in the book of discipline preparatory to licensure. And Mr. John Baker a licentiate under our care, was also examined on the several subjects required prior to ordination all which examinations were sustained. It was ordered that Messrs Dwight, Smith and Reid proceed to deliver their popular sermons tomorrow morning at 8 Oclock, and provided these discourses be sustained, that the young brethern be licensed to preach the gospel within our bounds or wherever they shall be regularly called. 490. The committee appointed to examine the minutes of the General Assembly Reported that the subjects refered to the Presbytery by that body and upon which it is now necessary that we act, are, 1. The reference in relation to changing or increasing the ratio of representation to the General Assembly, the consideration of which was refered to Dr Church and Messrs Gamble & Bryan. 2. A reference in relation to calling meeting of Synod the consideration of which was refered to Messrs, Moderwel Patterson, and Reid. 3. A reference in relation to the contingent funds of the Assembly, which was refered to Messrs Scott, Cassells and Liddel. The subject of the division of Presbytery was taken up, and after some progress made in the consideration thereof Presbytery had a recess until 7. Oclock P.M. Decatur, April 1st 1833 7 Oclock P.M. Presbytery met and proceeded to the order of the day towit, the receiving reports on the state of religion within our bounds. 491. It was resolved that we spend tomorrow morning one hour in special prayer to Almighty God for a blessing on ourselves and our churches. The Rev. Samuel K. Talmage was appointed a Commissioner to the next General Assembly. And the Clerk was ordered to forward him his Commission. Presbytery resolved to hold its semi-annual meeting in Athens on Friday the 9th of August at 11 Oclock. A.M. The mode of disposing of the tracts of Dr. Goulding on the subject of Baptism sent this Presbytery was taken up and refered to Messrs Cassells and Willard to report as early as practicable. A communication from Mr. Thomas McGruder a candidate for licensure under our care was read and considered. Mr McGruder some time since requested and obtained a dismission from this body to place himself under the care of the Presbytery of South Alabama. But owing to some providential circumstances he did not feel it his duty to put himself under the direction of that body, and now returned his dismission, acompanied with a request that the subject heretofore assigned him, namely, John 20:29 for a critical 492. exercise be commuted for some other subject, affording more matter for criticism. His request was granted, and Presbytery assigned him Heb 6:1-6 inclusive- and the exegesis on the subject heretofore assigned, which accompanion his communication was refered to Messrs Church and Gamble. The Committee to whom was refered the business of devising a mode for the distribution of the tracts of Dr. Goulding reported the following resolution which was adopted, viz, Resolved, that in order to defray the expense of publishing the tract on the mode and subjects of Baptism prepared by Dr Goulding, the price of each copy be 10 cents, and that they be offered for distribution at these rates. Mr. Patton, Mr. Carter and Mr. Mayne, obtained leave of absence from the remaining sessions. Concluded with prayer and Presbytery their adjourned till 8 Oclock tomorrow morning. 493. Decatur DeKalb Co. April 2nd 1833. Tuesday Morning 8 Oclock. A.M. Presbytery met according to adjournment and began with prayer. Members present as on yesterday. The minutes of the last session were read. It appearing to the Presbytery that the speedy ordination of Mr John Bake was highly expedient, and necessary to the prosperity of the Redeemer kingdom, after mature deliberation determined to set him apart this evening to the full work of the gospel ministry as an Evangelist. It was therefore ordered that Dr. Brown preach the ordination sermon and brother Wilson the Moderator preside, and brother Gamble give the charge; and Mr Baker was directed to deliver a sermon this evening at three Oclock from Matt. 8:27. as a part of trial prior to ordination. The committee appointed to examine the session Book of the church of Decatur reported, which report was laid on the table and the book returned to the session with directions to have it transcribed and put in good order, and sent up for review at our next annual meeting. 494. The Committee to whom was refered the Exegesis of Mr McGruder reported and the price was sustained as a part of trial prior to licensure. Mr. J.F. Montgomery a candidate for licensure, and a member of the Theological Seminary at Columbia, transmitted to presbytery an exegesis on the subject heretofore assigned him which was committed to Mr Cassells and Mr. Scott to report thereon as early as practicable. After a few minutes the committee reported & the part of trial was sustained. To Mr Montgomery was assigned Matt 25th Chap. first 13 verses, the subject of a lecture. Presbytery then proceeded to hear the popular discourses of the young brethern Dwight, Smith, and Reid, which being considered and sustained it was ordered that they be licensed this evening immediately after the ordination of Brother Baker. A reference from the session of Alcovia Church was taken up and committed to Messrs Guillan and Liddel to report as soon as practicable. 495. Mr. Orr asked and obtained leave of absence during the remaining sessions. The committee to whom was refered the Lecture of Mr Reid reported and the part of trial was sustained. The Committee to whom was committed the references of the last General Assembly in relation to a [?] of the representation in the Assembly, made the following report, which was accepted and adopted, and is as follows; towit, that the Presbytery recommend that the second section of the 12th Chap. of the form of Government he so altered as to read as follows; The General Assembly shall consist of an equal delegation of Bishops and Elders from each Presbytery in the following proportions: Each Presbytery consisting of not more than twenty four ministers shall send one minister and one Elder, and each Presbytery consisting of more than twenty four ministers shall send two ministers and two Elders, and in the like proportion for every twenty four ministers in every Presbytery, and these delegates so appointed shall be styled Commissioners to the General Assembly. 496. Presbytery then resumed the unfinished bussiness of yesterday; viz, the report of the committee on the division of this presbytery when after considerable discussion of the report was adopted, and is as follows, viz. That although the harmony and strong christian attachment which has existed and continues to exist among the churches and ministers of Hopewell Presbytery seems to forbid a division, nevertheless in the opinion of the committee such inconveniences result form the extent of territory and number of members as justify a division: the Committee therefore recommend the adoption of the following resolution; Resolved that Synod be requested to sell off the churches and ministers situated between the Oakmulgee and Chattahocee Rivers, with those in the counties of Newton, Walton, Gwinnett Campbell, Carroll and Heard, to form a new Presbytery to be called Goodhope. Presbytery had a recess until half past two Oclock P.M. Decatur half past 3 Oclock P.M. April 3d 1833. Presbytery met the Committee to whom was committed the reference from the session of Alcovia Church in relation 497. to an individual who had married a woman of whom report said she had another husband but of which fact no proof had been adduced reported and the whole business was refered back to the session of said Church to act on the case as in their judgement shall seem most conducive to the interests and purity of the church. The Committee to whom was refered that part of the minutes of the last General Assembly, relative to calling special meetings of synod made their report which was accepted and adopted and is a s follows: Resolved, that this Presbytery approve of the rule in relation to the calling of meetings of Synod sent by the last General Assembly and which is found on page 333 of the printed ministers of the Assembly for 1832, and the stated clerk of this Presbytery is required to send up this decision in writing to the next Assembly. Presbytery went into consideration of the Petition of the Rev. C. P. Beman praying that the pastoral relation existing between the petition and the church at South Liberty be dissolved, and having ascertained that the said church of South Liberty acceded to this request; it was resolved 498. that the prayer of the petition be granted, and the said pastoral relation is hereby dissolved, and the church of South Liberty is declared to be vacant. The following resolution was offered which was accepted and adopted: Resolved, That the Board of Directors of the Georgia Domestic Missionary Society be requested to report annually to this Presbytery all their missionary opperations within our bounds; and that so much of said report; and that so much of said report when so made be entered on the minutes of Presbytery, as may be [?] proper. The following resolution was offered, which was considered and adopted: Resolved that there be standing committees of examination appointed, each consisting of two members whose duty it shall be to conduct the examination of candidates for the ministry in the following order, viz- 1. On Languages, J.Y. Alexander, and S.J.Cassells- 2. On arts and Sciences Dr. A. Church & J.C Patterson 3. On Theology Natural and Revealed Dr. Brown & J. Gamble- 4 On Ecclesiastical History and Government and the Sacraments, 499. Nathan Hoyt & John S. Wilson. Presbytery proceeded to hear the discourses of John Baker a candidate for ordination, which was considered & sustained- The committees on the remaining session Books reported and the records were approved. The contributions from the churches for contingent expenses were called for and paid over the Treasurer of Presbytery. The resolution in relation to Mr E.S. Hopping a licentiate under our care, which was laid on the table on Saturday was taken up and agreed to and is as follows; Resolved, That Mr. Hopping be cited to appear at our semi-annual sessions to show cause if any he has, why his license to preach the gospel should not be considered null & void, and his name erased from our minutes. Mr James C. Cogley as student in Franklin College and a member of the Presbyterian Church in Athens, was introduced to Presbytery, desiring to be taken under its care as a candidate for the holy office of the gospel ministry. Mr C. was examined on experimental religion and the motives inducing him to desire the sacred office, which examination 500. was sustained, and the following parts of trial were assigned him. viz, A Latin Exegesis on An scriptures sauctas verbum, Dei. and Heb 2:14,15 as the subject of a critical exercise- The committee on the subject of Foreign Missions, reported that they did not think it expedient to form an auxiliary Foreign Missionary Society at present, bu recommend that a committee of deposit be appointed whose business it shall be to receive all monies contributed to this [?] & forward the same to the Pittsburgh board of Missions for the support of John B. Pinney missionary to Africa. And the brethern Chamberlain and Talmage were appointed that committee. The committee on the narrative of the state of religion made their report which was accepted and adopted. It was resolved that the members of this Presbytery will spend every saturday morning in prayer to almighty lord for his blessing on each other on their labors, and on the people when he had committed to their charge. Presbytery then appointed the following three and four days meetings. viz. 501. 1. A three days meeting meeting at Mount Olives, Columbia co. to commence on Friday before the 5th Sabbath in June, to be attended by Dr. Brown and Messrs. Cassells, Talmage and Reid, and Mr Clinton is also requested to attend. 2. A four days meeting at social [?], Stratton co. to commence on Thursday before the 1st Sabbath in June to be attended by Messrs Gamble, Hoyt, McAlpin, Carter and Chamberlain. 3. A four days meeting at Bethany, Green co to commence, Thursday before the 3d Sabbath in September to be attended by Dr Brown and Messrs Beman, Cassells, and Dwight. 4. A four days meeting at Hopewell, (Jasper) co to commence on Thursday before the 2nd Sabbath in September to be attended by Messrs Chamberlain, Gamble, Wilson and Patterson 5. A four days meeting at LaGrange, Troup co. to commence on Thursday before the 3d Sabbath in June to be attended by Messrs Scott, Patterson, Baker, and Dwight. 6. A four days meeting in Henry co, near McDonough to commence on Thursday before the 2nd Sabbath in October to be attended by Messrs Gamble, Chamberlain, Patterson, Dwight, and Dickson. 502. [?] A four days meeting at Olney, Thyatira, Jackson co. to commence on Thursday before the 4th Sabbath in July to be attended by Messrs McAlpin, Wilson, Guillin & Carter. 8. A four days meeting at Lebulon, Pike co. to commence Thursday before the 1st Sabbath in July to be attended by Messrs Patterson, Chamberlain, Patton, Scott, Smith & Gamble. The Treasurer of Presbytery was directed to pay to the states clerk his salary. Presbytery had a recess until half past 7 Oclock P.M. Decatur half past 7. Oclock P.M. April 2. 1833. Presbytery met and proceeded to the order of the day the ordination of Mr Baker. Dr. Brown preached a sermon from John 21:17. Feed my Sheep. after which the Moderator having in the presence of the people stated the steps which the presbytery had taken with the candidate now about to be ordained, and having proposed to Mr Baker the questions appointed to be put to candidates for ordination, and be having adopted the Confession of Faith, he was solemnly set 503. apart to the full work of the gospel ministry by prayer and the imposition of the hands of the Presbytery as an Evangelist. After which Mr Gamble having delivered a suitable charge to the newly ordained Bishop he took his seat as a member of this presbytery. The Presbytery having closed the trials of Messrs Dwight, Smith, and Reid and they having received and adopted the confession of Faith of our Church and satisfactorily answered the questions appointed to be put to candidates for licensure were licensed in the usual form to preach the gospel within our bounds, or wherever else they may be regularly called. Concluded with prayer and Presbytery then adjourned to meet tomorrow morning at sun-rise. Decatur, DeKalb co. Wednesday Morning April. 3d 1833. Presbytery met pursuant to adjournment and began with prayer. Members present as on yesterday. The minutes of the last session were read. 504. The Committee appointed to prepare a report on the subject of missions made their report which accepted and adopted- Resolved, That the Georgia Domestic Missionary Society be requested to prepare and lay before this body a report of their proceedings since the organization of the society, at our next annual sessions. The committee appointed to prepare a report on the subject of educating poor and pious young men for the gospel ministry stated their inability to make a report for want of data. The committee was therefore discharged & another committee consisting of Dr. Church and Mr Hoyt appointed to prepare a report on this subject and forward it to the board of education of the General Assembly. Resolved, that the Georgia Presbyterian Education Society be requested to make a report of their proceedings since their organization and lay the same before this body at its next annual sessions.
