Schall ' HE THEME OF ELIVERED AT THE WE OF THIS FALLS CARILLON, APTLY DELIVERED AT THE HEIGHT OF OUR NATIONS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION SEASON, IS "BEING HEARD/ 7 I TRUST THAT ALL OGLETHORPE ALUMS HAVE EXERCISED THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO VOTE (HOW COULD ONE NOT, AFTER FOUR YEARS OF ABSORBING THE LIFE LESSONS OF THE CORE?), SO AT LEAST WE HAVE ALL BEEN HEARD ON THIS TOPIC. Voting every few years is certainly one example of raising one's voice, but at Oglethorpe, the voices of our faculty and students are heard every day. In the pages that follow, you will hear the varied voices of members of our Political Science faculty, Drs. Kendra King and Joseph Knippenberg. This semester, dozens of our students have be- come actively engaged in politics, local and national. They have been passionately involved in service projects at such places as Grant Park and with community partners including Drew Elementary School and the South Atlanta High School of Law and Social Justice. And on a very local front, Oglethorpe embarked this past spring on an institution-wide strategic planning process. 1 2 I OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY The goal of the planning committee, con- sisting of 25 representatives from faculty, staff, trustees, students and alumni, is to have a plan in place by summer 2009. At one of our early meetings, the question was asked: Why is Oglethorpe doing a strategic plan now? You might be surprised that even this question started quite a conversa- tion - people on the committee obviously want to be heard. I want to share my answer with you, our alumni. In return to that question, I cordially invite you to be heard on the subject, too. (Please send emails to lschall(' oglethorpe.edu) I promise I will answer every note I receive. Oglethorpe has embarked on creating a strategic plan because we have a unique opportunity ahead of us. Some have said that liberal arts and science colleges can no longer compete with educational institu- tions which offer students a plethora of pre-professional opportunities. I know this is not true. Last year, over 4,000 high school seniors applied for admission to Oglethorpe.I also know that, on average, college graduates will hold a dozen jobs in their lifetime, many of which don't even exist today. The skills that will be in high demand in this new economy are critical thinking, effective communication and creative problem-solving. The education we provide has never been more relevant. I also believe that Oglethorpe can become a compelling choice each year for hundreds of top students across the county if we continue to discover effective and creative ways to connect our enduring mission (the liberal arts) to our place (Atlanta). We know that our location is the number one reason most students cite for choosing Oglethorpe. We know that cities are hot among college bound students in a way that urban sites have never been before. Specifically, we know Atlanta is the number one destination for young college-educated people. And we know that Atlanta offers thousands of op- portunities for engagement and learning. If we look at the kinds of things going on at Oglethore today, the power of linking our mission with our place can clearly be seen. The Core, after all, was founded on the ideal of citizenship and today, it continues to of- fer our students a foundation for becoming responsible citizens. Last spring, we offered a course on micro- finance that challenged students to think globally, and was funded and co-taught by local Atlanta social entrepreneurs. Five of our natural science professors are working on an interdisciplinary course to be taught this year addressing the issue of traffic in Atlanta (Yes, we have traffic in Atlanta). We have faculty teaching urban ecology; others U On average, college graduates will hold a dozen jobs in their lifetime, many of which don't even exist today. The skills that will be in high demand in this new economy are critical thinking, effective communication and creative problem-solving. we provide has never been teach in the urban leadership program. The English department has offered courses on the literature of the city and the coun- try. Our Education faculty helps prepare future teachers to be successful in diverse, urban districts. Our Political Science faculty makes great use of local politicians in their courses, and our Theatre students are increasingly connected to our own Georgia Shakespeare. Students make use of Olgethorpe Museum, as well as museums and galleries in Atlanta and other cities; our new mini-semester in New York is a dynamic example of liberal teaching at its best. Students interested in music were once again hosted this fall at the Atlanta Symphony. This morning, I met with two amazing students who were selected from a cast of hundreds for internships at the Carter Center. The Center for Civic Engage- ment provides support every day to faculty who already use the city as a laboratory; members of our biology faculty visit the Blue Heron Nature Preserve each semester to enhance the learning that goes on inside our gates. In Communications and Rhetoric Studies, Atlanta offers a dynamic resource to faculty and students, through internships with such places as CNN and Cox Commu- nications. About 25 percent of our students currently intern in the city. Why not all of them? Every successful institution has an iden- titya brand if you will. This brand is something relevant, readily identifiable and unique to the institution. It never defines everything the institution does, but provides coherence to its education that the market finds compelling. In my view for Oglethorpe, I return to what it is that we have and what we can promise that is unique. And I believe that is a combina- tion of our mission AND place, discover- ing new ways to integrate our curriculum, represented by the Core, with the learning opportunities presented by the community in which we live. That, I suggest, needs to lie at the heart of our plan going forward. What do you think? Be heard. NOTES FROM THE PROVOST by Dr. Stephen Herschler In effecting this transition, I find myself drawing upon my academic training. The most obvious parallel is some 20 years of studying organizations and administrative reform, including time spent in France, Senegal, and China. Equally relevant, how- ever, is my training in qualitative research methods. Qualitative research is ideographic, not nomothetic. In other words, it does not seek to establish whether the world ac- cords with pre-existing theories. Rather, it seeks to elicit how human beings' under- standings of themselves and the world around them shape their perceptions of and actions in the world. Such a research approach requires not just that one listens, it requires concerted efforts to ensure that people are actually 'being heard.' Alumni, as a group of vital importance to Oglethorpe, certainly need to be heard now more than ever. This sum- mer, Oglethorpe University commenced a strategic planning initiative. The aim is to have in place by the end of this academic year a plan that will guide OU to a place of institutional strength and prominence in 10 years' time. Input from all facets of the OTT rommnnitv is vital to ensuring the OU community is vital to ensuring that this plan reflects its aspirations and thereby garners its support. That being said, alumni have a special role to play. Having completed an Oglethorpe education, you have the advantage of per- spective. Just as I have found my education to serve me well in the present, you know the contribution that your Oglethorpe education has made to your personal and professional development. You understand the long-term consequences of your educa- By the time you receive this, most of you should have received an email from the Strategic Planning Steering Committee requesting your responses to some survey questions. I heartily encourage you to take the time to answer these questions. I and other members of the Steering Commit- tee also welcome any additional input and suggestions you care to make. Let me assure you, you are being heard. OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY OU IN THE NEWS OGLETHORPE COMEBACK WINS TUNICA NATIONAL by Erin L. Greer The Stormy Petrels set a school record for a par 72 course in September, coming in seven under par 281 to win the 3rd Annual Rhodes College Fall Invitational at Tunica National near Memphis. The win came despite the Petrels being four strokes behind Huntingdon College in the first round. In the end, the Petrels won the match with a score of 579 to Huntingdon's 582. Oglethorpe totaled a record 5 players in the top nine spots. Oglethorpe "B" Craig Stevenson 70-72 = 142 and Oglethorpe "A" Olafur Loftsson 73-69 = 142 tied for 3rd and earned All Tournament honors. Senior Hap Kaufold "B" 72-73-145, Sophomore Matt Rebitch "A" 74-71=145, and Junior Scott Pugh "A" 75-70=145 all tied for 7th. Junior David Dilibero 73-73=146 finished 14th and Freshman Matt Bernstein 77-71 = 148 finished 1 8th. Of the OU "A" and "B" teams, eight of the 1 players landed in the Top 20. I OGLETHORPE PRESIDENT, ALUMNI, TRUSTEES, STUDENTS GO GREEN AT ECOMANOR University President Dr. Lawrence M. Schall joined many members of the OU staff, alumni, students and Board of Trustees for a tour of EcoManor Sept. 23. The environmentally friendly home, owned by Rutherford and Laura Turner Seydel '84, served as an example to guests of the benefi ts of "living green." Among the amenities OU Honor students and members of the ECOS (Environmentally Conscious Oglethorpe Students) student organization observed: low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints, stains and sealants, all-natural fi ber fabric on furniture and rugs, natural cleansing products, recyclable housing tools, devices to channel rain water for home use, the home's 26 solar panels and much more. Information on EcoManor is available at www.ecomanor.com. OU IN THE Like the famous Long Corridor with more than 7,000 stories, Joe Sutton '09, an Oglethorpe University evening degree program student, has many tales of China to tell. This summer, Sutton served as an intern for NBC Universal during the television giant's coverage of the Beijing Olympics. Employed at Turner Broadcasting for five years now, Sutton was introduced to the NBC opportunity through his affiliation with th Emma Bowen Foundation. He applied, and a few months later was informed that he had received one of five fully-paid scholar- ships to join NBC overseas. The trip was laden with fascinating experiences for Sutton. His first time overseas, Sutton's adventure began when he arrived too late to catch his international flight. Rerouted, Sutton finally landed in China, only to be overcome by smog and detained by Chinese authority for taking photos inside of the "Bird's Nest." It was a frightening experience much like the culinary delicacies which included cow stomach, scorpions, silk worms and sea horse. But overall, Sutton, the youngest student in the OU evening degree program, said China was a breath-taking country. "The technology is so far advanced compared to here in America. The cost of living is very affordable as well," Sutton said. "But what I really loved was the people. They were very attentive; they tried to be as helpful as possible. The college students there spoke very good English. They said it was mandatory they learn it if they want to have a good job." Among the other gems Sutton gathered while attending Olympic swimming, diving, tennis and track and field? "The motto [of the Olympics] was 'One World, One Dream,' and when you reflect on that, it really makes you wonder why is it that we can't all be- come one. Why is there so much hate and imbalance in the world when we have so many things that bond us together?" A communications major and political science minor from Atlanta, Sutton said his role for NBC digital editing, the interview pro- cesses, camera work, scheduling infrastructure, Web site content quality control, streaming media encoding and distribution will help him on his way to a continued career in media. But his personal experiences will help him better relate to his worldwide audience. "They have different beliefs and systems. If we want to have diplomatic talks and a world where communication is possible, we have to visit countries and learn about their cultures and be will- ing to accept people and their cultures as they are," he said. ALUMNI FALL SPORTS DAY Once again, students and alumni turned out in full force for Alumni Fall Sports Day Sept. 27. Volleyball began at 9 a.m., and the alumni game took place before the East/West Cross Conference Tournament. But despite the efforts of Athletic Director Jay Gardiner and Women's Soccer Coach Alan Woods, the home team fell to the Alumni team. A Kids Clinic was held at 1 :30 p.m. and was followed by the sixth annual John P. Salamone Alumni Soccer Tournament. Four teams, featuring more than 30 alumni players took the field with OU President Dr. Lawrence Schall and OU soccer coach Jon Akin. The Grey Team took home honors at the event, which was established in 2003 in me- moriam of John Salamone '86, who died in the terrorist attacks in New York on Sept. 11, 2001. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JAY GARDINER FEATURED IN MAGAZINE Oglethorpe players have often heard Assistant Dean and Athletic Director Jay Gardiner's "Six Keys for Suc- cess," but, thanks to an article in Athletic Management magazine, coaches and athletes from around the country will now be able to benefit from Gardiner's experience. In his article, which ran in the October/November issue, Gardiner outlines how his six principles "have helped me treat people fairly and equitably by forcing an honest and straightforward approach to deal- ing with others." In fact, they have proven so effective that Gardiner says he has had the principles posted on the wall of every office he has ever occupied. So what are the principles? 1 . Listen generously; 2. Speak straight; 3. Honor others' commit- ments; 4. Be for each other; 5. Applaud achievement; and 6. Criticize in private. While the principles may sound vague as a bare-bones list, Gardiner is always more than happy to flesh them out for those who are willing to listen, as he does in the Athletic Management article. If you didn't catch the issue, you can always catch the principles in action while cheering for the Petrels courtside. This past May; associate professor Robert Steen proved Oglethorpe's claims that a liberal arts educa- tion can take you anywhere you want to go. For Steen and 10 study abroad students, "anywhere you want to go" just happened to be Japan. From May 10 to the 25, the group enjoyed a two-week study tour in language and culture based in Kanazawa, a former castle town and thriving modern city located on the west coast of Japan. Students actively engaged with the local culture through language classes, workshops, excursions and living with a host family. Many used bicycles to commute to school and get around the city. Integral to the learning experience were three hours of language instruction per day at Eurocentres Kanazawa, a highly respected language school. Afternoon programs provided an understanding of local history and culture through visits to historical sites, traditional gardens, a cooking class and a tea ceremony. A weekend trip to the Noto Peninsula featured a tour of a Shinto shrine and a visit to a hot spring bath overlooking the Japan Sea. OGLETHORPE PRESIDENT HONORED Oglethorpe President Dr. Lawrence M. Schall received an award from the Georgia Justice Project at the annual Grass Roots Justice Awards Oct. 1 5 for his leadership in advancing the cause of equal justice in the community. Before joining Oglethorpe, Schall, an attorney with Philadelphia Community Legal Services and later the Juvenile Law Center of Philadelphia, litigated on behalf of children in both dependency and delinquency courts. In his role as president of Oglethorpe, Schall's vision has been to integrate the liberal arts with service to community. Under his leadership, Oglethorpe opened the Center for Civic Engagement in 2006, connecting its students to the city of Atlanta and beyond. Oglethorpe was also named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for two consecutive years, the only Georgia institution of higher education to receive this distinction. Founded in 1 986, Georgia Justice Project seeks to transform courtrooms, communities and people to provide justice, opportunity and hope to the poor of Atlanta while building community awareness and understanding. The Grass Roots Justice Awards honor individu- als whose personal objectives and accomplishments embody GJP's own. Dr. Schall was one of three recipients at this year's event. Oglethorpe made local, regional and national news this semester when the university unveiled signed transcripts from a famous speech delivered by Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932. The speech, which was delivered at the Fox Theatre as a commencement address for Oglethorpe University, spoke to the economic hardships of the Great Depression, and, as writers for numerous news organizations including the Wall Street Journal noted, drew uncanny parallels with the nation's current economic struggles. Due to the overwhelming response, the papers continue to be on display at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, along with a statue and bust of Roosevelt, which are on loan from the Yatesville Public Library, until December 7. CARILLON I 7 WHO'S NEW ATOU: Meet the New Professors by Erin L. Greer DEVON BELCHER Professor Devon Belcher says there are two reasons he teaches philosophy: one, because it's the only job you can have where you actually practice philosophy and two, because he enjoys turning people on to "cool little puzzles." "It's fun analyzing these mind puzzles," Belcher laughed. "Some say 'Oh that's weird!' and others say 'Hey, that's neat!'" A self-professed "technology geek," Belcher admits he is drawn to the philosophies of math and computation. Which, even he admits, cannot completely account for his love of online gaming, especially Battle- field 2142. Belcher, who teaches epistemology, Plato and Core, remembers having an interest in philosophy at a young age. He was initially taken with the subject when asked 'Where is the edge of space? And if there is an edge, what's beyond it? And would what's beyond it be space?' "Some people are just grabbed by certain questions," Belcher explains. While Belcher has lived throughout the United States and in various places in Europe, he comes to Oglethorpe from the University of Colorado, where he received his master's and doctorate. He received his undergraduate degree from Reed College. When he isn't confounding students with the "cool little puzzles," Belcher said he enjoys cooking, especially barbeque. In fact, he and fellow philosophy professor Simon Sparks are considering hosting an Iron Chef competition next semester on campus to demonstrate their culinary prowess. RONALD P. BOBROFF Politics professor Ronald P. Bobroff,aNew Hampshire native, has many passions- astronomy for one. Skiing is another. Once, he even skied on a glacier in Austria. But, even with his love of stars and the speed of the slopes, Bobroff admits he has another weakness: Russian history. He wrote his novel, Roads to Glory, on the topic, and is working on another book, Ties that bind: The Franco-Russian Alliance in State and Society, 1890-1920, presently. He said he looks forward to imparting a bit of his enthusiasm on his History 320 and 321 classes, both of which focus on Russia. "It's wonderful," Bobroff commented on being a professor of Russian history. "You are constantly working on and discussing things you are interested in." Bobroff holds degrees from Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania and the London School of Economics. He has also lived abroad, spending nearly a year in Russia to research his book. He comes to Oglethorpe after spending seven years as an assistant professor at Wake Forest University. Bobroff said he joined the Oglethorpe fam- ily because he was impressed by the level of student/teacher interaction the campus offered. "It allows for the sharing of knowl- edge," he said. In addition to Russia, astronomy and ski- ing, Bobroff loves to travel and said he and his wife strive to take at least one interna- tional trip every year. Bobroff is also pas- sionate about Schnauzers and is involved in Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas. LEAH R. ZINNER Originally from Columbia, MD, Psychology Professor Leah R. Zinner opted for southern sunshine over homeland snow and moved to Atlanta to attend Emory University where she studied social perceptions of interracial couples. Then following a two-year stint with the Centers for Disease Control Zinner thought she might take another chance on that snow. "I decided to attend graduate school, and headed north to the University of Wisconsin, Madison to continue the re- search I had begun as an undergraduate," recalls Zinner, who less-than-fondly remembers trudging through Wisconsin in -15 degree weather. "You would have icicles hanging from your eyelashes... the weather report would literally say 'exposed skin will get frostbite in 20 minutes.'" While in graduate school, Zinner's research spanned a variety of topics related to emotion, prejudice and intergroup relations. But while Zinner spent her scholastic years studying others, the pursuit also taught her something about herself: she loves to teach. "I'm thrilled to be at Oglethorpe," Zinner says. "The close-knit community here is very friendly and inviting, and I feel very lucky that I'm able to do what I enjoy most - teach undergraduates - in a city that I love. I will be teaching a variety of psychology courses, including Social Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Research Methods, Advanced Experimental Methods, as well as others in the future." In addition to her interests in psychology and teaching, Zinner is an a\id fan of ballet and ethnic food. OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY VERONICA MENZES HOLMES '02 Ask any student who has ever visited Professor Veronica Menzes Holmes' office, the British Guiana (now Guyana) native is definitely "a citizen of the world." From her rich, red walls to her photos of African tribesmen to her statue from Zimbabwe, Holmes' surroundings reflect her diverse travels and background. An Oglethorpe alumna, Holmes has traveled throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa and Australia. In fact, during her tenure at OU, Homes had three residencies one in Atlanta, one in France and one in Australia. Holmes said the inspiration for her travels is the same as the inspiration for her scholastic endeavors curiosity. Curiosity, she says, is what drove her to beg her mother to enroll her in kindergarten at the age of three. Since that time, Holmes has excelled in academia and received numerous fellowships, grants and honors as well as degrees from Oglethorpe and Georgia State Universities. She graduated with honors from Oglethorpe with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 2002. In 2005, Holmes accepted a position as Adjunct Professor in Core, and this fall she began teaching the first three years of Core on a full-time basis. Additionally, Holmes served on the President s Advisory Council for five years before becoming a Trustee. In July of 2008, she became one of three Trustee Advisors. When she isn't serving as a Trustee Advisor or teaching future OU alumni, Holmes spends her time working with non-profit organizations which work to benefit low-income African American communities. Holmes is presently pursuing a master's degree in religion at Georgia State University. KAY RENSING Students studieren des Deutschen (studying German) have likely already seen Professor Kay Rensing around campus. In Atlanta for a year on a teaching exchange program, Rensing has taken to teaching German 101 and 201 like a fische to water, bringing his brother to class to play linguistic guinea pig "he pretends that he can only speak German, so the students have to talk with him in German" and reestablishing German Movie Nights which run in Earl Dolive Hall throughout the Fall. A graduate of the University of Dortmund's Teacher Education Program, Rensing hopes his teaching opportunity at Oglethorpe will do more than instill in his students the differences between der, das and die. "My focus is on cultural learning as well as language. You learn culture through language and language through culture," he says. The appeal to teaching, Rensing says, is the interest in individual development. "I am a teacher because I love seeing my students develop," he says. " There is also a good deal of idealism in it: Through my work as a teacher I can do my part in making the world a better place by devel- oping critical thinkers." On the whole, Rensing says he is enjoying his time at Oglethorpe, getting to know the "friendly" students and staff, but he admits Atlanta's transportation leaves something to be desired. "When I got here I expected to be able to buy a bike and ride to the University," he says. "But if I had done that, I think it would have killed me. .This city is not very pedestrian friendly." Rensing returns to Germany next year, where he said he hopes to accept a position in upper secondary education. Xinsong (Pine) Wang, Oglethorpe visiting Assistant Professor of Politics, can tell you a thing or two about perspective. In Tibet, Wang climbed an 18,000-foot snow-cov- ered mountain. He has also experienced the sunset over La Jolla beach in San Diego, California. Though vastly different views from vastly different altitudes, Wang witnessed the beauty in both landscapes. The beauty of perspective is part of why he loves to travel, and part of why he loves to study American democracy as it relates to his native country of China. Wang's research specialties include institu- tion-building and governance in authori- tarian states and grassroots democratic movements in China. His passion for his homeland led Wang to Atlanta's Carter Center where he worked with the China Program from 2002 to 2006 to "develop pilot projects on local people's congress elections and empowering local people's deputies in China." Wang served as a member of the Carter Center's delegations to monitor the village, township, and county elections in China, and also participated in a Duke Univer- sity China Elections Study Group, which initiated and implemented pilot projects to standardize direct elections of urban residential committees. At Oglethorpe, Wang said he wants to continue working to foster positive rela- tionships. "I really enjoy the friendly and intimate environment at Oglethorpe Uni- versity, and it makes me feel that teaching is not solely a job. It is a responsibility to this family-like community," he said. Wang received his Ph.D. and M.A. in political science from Georgia State University and his B.A. in English and Diplomacy from Foreign Affairs College in China. He teaches Comparative Politics, Asian Politics and will teach Politics of the Developing World and Chinese Politics next spring. When he isn't teaching, Wang enjoys playing Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" on his guitar and cooking tradi- tional Chinese dishes including spicy tofu. 7 Oglethorpe University claims a long-standing dition of political and ial involvement. This tradition, reflected in the life of university namesake James Edward Oglethorpe, continues REFLECT! PAST AND THE FUTU 1 1 fc to evolve as students, faculty and alumni take their place in history. JAMES EDWARD OGLETHORPE by Erin L Greer Born in 1696 in Surrey, England, James Edward Oglethorpe learned the importance of political involvement at a young age. Through his militan career, which began in adolescence, he fell under the sendee of some of England's most prominent citizens, and, in 1722 at the age of 26, Ogletho- f: rpe's influence and connections won him a seat ii Parliament where he would serve for 32 years. Oglethorpe's years in politics were dedicated to philanthropy and service. A noted defender of co lonial rights and opponent of slavery, Oglethorpe used his position and influence to promote the ideas of equality. In England he, along with other famous military men on the Prison Discipline Committee, witnessed first-hand the atrocities oJ both the Fleet and Marshalsea Debtors Prisons. (Oglethorpe himself had a close friend who had died of smallpox in such a prison.) Fueled by his distaste for this injustice, Oglethorpe fought for THE IS ON prison reform and joined with the likes of Lord Percival and a group of 21 others in creating a charter for the new debtor's colony named Georgia (in honor of King George II). Oglethorpt used his connections to move the Charter for the colony of Georgia quickly to the king, who signed it on June 9, 1732. V Oglethorpe went on to serve as the first executive officer of the new colony. Living by the motto of Georgia's Trustees, "Not for self, but for others," Oglethorpe worked tirelessly on behalf of the less fortunate and, flouting trustee bans, permitted Lutheran Salzburgers, and other persecuted re- ligious minorities to settle in Georgia. Addition- im all}', Oglethorpe promoted race relations which ^^^yJ^adofhis time, showing great respect for : Native Americans and being vocal of his op- (4 Knto slavey. ^Kdth the new colony came new hardships. ^Mmng his sendee, he saw many economic and military trials, one of which being the famous Battle of Blood}- Marsh. Oglethorpe continued to serve on the Board of Trustees of Georgia, but, as the trustees gradually relaxed restrictions on alcohol and slavery, Oglethorpe's ties with the board became strained. By 1750 Georgia's founder was no longer involved with the board. Oglethorpe was called back to England in dis- favor, despite his many humanitarian efforts in Georgia. Eventually, he began a long retirement. Before his death the General enthusiastically greeted John Adams, ambassador to England from the newly formed United States. He had lived to see his infant colon}- become a free and independent state. At the age of SS the General died at Cranham Hall on June 30. 17S5. TIMELINE 1910 The charter establishing Oglethorpe University is issued, one day before the 139th anniversary of the birth of James Edward Oglethorpe. The university was originally established in Midway, Ga. 1836 January 1857 Famous scientists Joseph LeConte and James Woodrow (uncle of President Woodrow Wilson) held professorships at the university. Civil War hardships force the closure of the university. Oglethorpe will go on to reopen briefly in 1866, but it closes again in 1869. 1870 Post-war financial problems plague the University. Oglethorpe is closed again at the request of the Synod, but Presbyterian activism in the Reconstruc- tion period remained strong, and the goal of establishing and maintaining an institution of higher education continued. 1909 The cornerstone is laid on the new Atlanta campus. A letter from Presi- dent Woodrow Wilson, nephew of former OU professor James Woodrow, is read at ceremony. In his letter, President Wilson expressed "a deep interest in the revival of a university which deserves to be cherished by all who are interested in higher education." Oglethorpe University opens again in 1916 with 45 students. 1927 1850s December 1835 May 30, 1862 1872 Joseph M. Brown, class of 1872, becomes governor of Georgia He serves through 1913. January 15, 1915 Carlyle Pollock Beman, New York native, becomes the first president of OU. The 21 founders of the university were Presbyterian, and Presbyterians of the time had consider- able political clout. Church leaders at this time feared the evils of city life might affect the university's students, as Midway was located only a short distance from Georgia's capital city of Milledgeville. Sidney Lanier, famous poet, musician and critic, enrolls at Oglethorpe University. While a student, he formed close ties with scientist James Woodrow. Trustees purchase the John Neal house on Washington Street in downtown Atlanta and the uni- versity relocates, but despite the promise of the new location, OU does not prosper. Thornwell Jacobs organizes a series of "Pan Presbyterian" gatherings in Atlanta to cel- ebrate the 50th anniversary of the Southern Presby- terian Church. But the meetings also have a secondary purpose to stir up interest in plans to reestablish Ogletho- rpe University. By 1912, Jacobs has garnered the inter- est of the first 100 contributors to the Oglethorpe project, and the group held their first meet- ing Sept. 17, 1912. Jacobs would be appointed president ofOUinl915. Newspaper giant and Democratic New York Congressman William Randolph Hearst is awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from the university. A political powerhouse, the influence of Hearst's newspaper syndicate was one of the leading causes of the United States' entry into the Span- ish American War in 1898. Hearst's life served as one of the driving inspirations for Orson Welles' classic, Citizen Kane. Phoebe Hearst Hall on Oglethorpe's cam- pus is named for the mother of William Randolph Hearst. May 23, 1932 Thomas Kimmwood Peters is hired as an archivist for Jacobs' revolutionary time capsule, the Crypt of Civilization and will be opened in 8113. For the project, Peters microfilmed 960,000 pages of reading material. The Crypt was sealed on May 28, 1940. Charles Longstreet Weltner graduates from Oglethorpe. A staunch Civil Rights advocate, Weltner, a Democrat, served in Congress from 1963-1967- In 1964, Newsweek declared him a "prototype of the articulate young congressman the 'new breed' on whom so many Southern moderates stake their hopes for the future." A year earlier, Weltner had become the lirst southern politician to condemn his colleagues for standing mute after the bombing of a Birmingham, Alabama, church that killed four young African American girls. Following his terms in Congress, Weltner served as a judge in the Supreme Court of Georgia. Weltner received the Kennedy Library Profiles in Courage Award in 1991. Dr. James Whitney Bunting takes office of mayor of North Atlanta and resigns as president of Oglethorpe. Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter hands an official proclama- tion to OU President Paul Kenneth Vonk which declares Febru- ary Independent Higher Education Month in Georgia. 1943 February 12, 1954 1956 April 29, 1977 April 29, 1977 Governor of New York and future president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree and delivered the com- mencement address for Oglethorpe University. His commencement ad- dress, which was given at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, reflected the New Deal principles that he would later deliver to the nation as the president of the United States. Georgia Governor Richard B Russell Jr. and Barron Collier attended the ceremony 1935 Thornwell Jacobs' tenure ends. In his near 30 years as pres- ident, Jacobs oversaw numerous projects and conferred degrees on figures including Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart. The faculty of the university passes a resolution to celebrate Oglethorpe Day, the day the colony was founded in 1733 by James Edward Oglethorpe. 1955 1972 Griffin Bell, 77th Attorney General of the U.S. under President Jimmy Carter, is keynote speaker at Law Dav and Convocation. 1948 Legendary basketball coach Garland Pinholster begins his 10 year reign at Oglethorpe. During his coaching years, Pinholster was an advocate of Civil Rights and often elected to play African American teams. Following his years as coach, Pinholster went on to serve as a Republican in the Georgia House of Representatives and also served as Dean of Admin- istration and a Trustee at Oglethorpe. Pinholster was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 and received an honorary doctorate from the university in 2004. Anne Cox Chambers daughter of newspaper- man and Democrat James M. Cox is picked as President Jimmy Carter's Ambassador to Belgium. Chambers received an honorary degreee from OU in 1983 J.B. Fuqua, CEO of Fuqua Indus- tries and Chairman of the Democrat- ic Party of Georgia, gives the address at commencement exercises. Fuqua was a self-made businessman, and, as Democratic Chair, ran Carl Sanders' successful campaign lor governor in 1962 and was instrumental in Jimmy Carter's early political career. In his later years, Fuqua became well known as a philanthropist, having donated more than $100 million to various charities. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, visits the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art for "The Mystical Arts of Tibet" exhibition, which featured the Dalai Lama's personal sacred objects. August 12, 1983 Georgia Governor Joe Frank Harris gives the address at commencement exercises. Georgia Governor, and honorary degree recipient, Zell Miller delivered the com- mencement address. Former New York City mayor and Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani holds a "town hall" meeting at Oglethorpe University. Thomson, Secretary and organizer of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's constituency, spoke at the Oglethorpe Community Leaders Luncheon in November. April 11, 2006 State Rep. John Lev/is speaks in Lupton Auditorium on the Civil Rights Movement. May 16, 2007 A portion of Peachtree Road is dedicated to OU alumnus and Trustee Steven J. Schmidt, '40, World War II pilot and inductee in both the C Jglethorpe and Georgia Sports Halls of Fame. Schmidt received an honorary doctorate of laws in 1986. Ge- origa Governor Sonny Purdue delivered the dedication. U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss. R-Ga., holds a Town Hall meet- ing on Oglethorpe's campus where he discusses the nation's current financial crisis and his plans for encouraging the development of alternative fuels. feJM STUDENT VIEWS ON VOTING AND THE CURRENT POLITICAL CLIMATI Alesha Tentinger '09: Some of the most important issues to me are our economy especially right now and the war in Iraq. Those are the two biggest factors I am looking at right now. Ember Melcher '08: I think it's really important for students in particular to vote because you are on a campus that is full of well-informed peers and professors that can help you learn about the issues that are important to you, and it's a good time to start building a habit of performing your civic duty as a citizen of the United States. We all know that college is a habit-forming time. Stephanie Jef coat ' 1 0: I think this year's election is pretty important because we have had the same President for a while, so I think the country is ready for some change. I think it's important for students to get involved because we are the up-and-coming group that are going to be leaders in the community, ancl we need to be educated about who is going to be running our community. And I always say, rou don't have a right to complain unless you vote.' So if you don't tike something about the government then you need to vote, and you need to research, and you need to get yourself educated. Marian James '09: I think it's very important for young people to be voting because this generation hasn't been active. At this point, with the race so close in so many states, particularly Georgia, even national campaigns are telling us that whether a candidate wins or loses is up to the college students. It's really disappointing to hear people my age say 'I am not going to vote. It doesn't matter.' Well, it does matter. We are the Florida of this election. OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY By Dr. Kendra King, Politics Professor Today more than ever there is a generation of young people who refuse to be silent about the economic, political, and socio-cultural issues that are impacting both the nation and the world. Why are they demanding that they be heard? I believe it is a combination of things. First, it is prophetic. Forty years after Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.'s "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech, young people today have caught hold of his universal message that "we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land." In this regard, this is another reason young people today are willing to register, vote, run for and even hold elective office because they understand that they have voice, opinions and power to impact change on the local, state, national and international level. Finally, young people are being heard (making their voice known) because for the first time in the history of America the possibilities of both symbolic and substantive change are real. No longer are people holding on to "dreams" of the first woman or African American being elected into the highest office in the land. Today, young people recognize that very soon someone from one of these subsets will be the leader of the free world. As such, young people are being heard because, as Hip Hop group De La Soul said, "Stakes is High!" Let me begin by confessing that I'm a crank and a contrarian. I comfort myself by saying that it's one of the gifts I bring to my teaching: I'm here to make students think. When I teach Aristotle's Politics in Human Nature and Social Order, I take some pleasure in calling students' attention to the fact that, for Aristotle, democracy is a "bad regime." It's the selfish rule of the poor, who typically happen to be many, just as oligarchy is the selfish rule of the rich, who typically happen to be few. Choosing between the two would seem simply to depend upon which side you're on; neither has a real claim to moral superiority, to the allegiance of thoughtful and decent men and women who care about the common good. Of course, I don't leave it there. Aristotle doesn't either. He offers a qualified argument on behalf of democracy, suggesting that, in their collective capacity, "the many" (in Greek, the demos), can render judgments that are comparable in quality to those offered by the proverbial few good men. But, as anyone who has organized a covered dish supper knows, it's not just any group effort that's comparable to a meal prepared by an excellent chef. If I have to choose between a dinner catered by Paula Dean and eating at a fraternity house, I know where I'm going. (Give me heart disease rather than food poisoning any day.) Aristotle suggests that collective judgments have to be organized, with each of us knowing how best we can contribute to the common deliberations. We have to know what we know and what we don't know, speaking about the former and shutting up about the latter. But it isn't quite that simple. If we literally don't know, how can we be sure that those who say they know really do? Can't we be the victims of clever and eloquent huck- sters? How can we be sure that those who claim expertise actually have it, or that those who have it use it for the good of the community, rather than for their own good? Following this train of thought, Aristotle offers us a distinction between "master craftsmen" and those "educated in a sub- ject," between doctors and those educated in medicine. The latter aren't experts, but they can understand and evaluate the arguments of those who are. I call them "liberally educated," having received the education befitting a free human being, one capable of governing himself or herself and participating in self-government. If you don't have this sort of education, you are easy prey both to self-professed experts (who aren't) and to smart people who really don't care about your good or the good of the country. As my students are aware that they're all getting a liberal education of this sort, they find this somewhat comforting. Then I remind them that the number of students enrolled in liberal arts colleges in a given year would basically be enough to fill a large football stadium say, the one at the University of Michigan that seats around 100,000. Of course this isn't the whole story psst, you don't have to go to a liberal arts college to get a liberal educa- tionbut it ought to be sobering. Our Founders believed that republican self-government required a liberally edu- cated citizenry. When we look around, how much evidence of this kind of education do we see in our political leaders, let alone in our fellow citizens? Are too few people voting or too many? As I said, I'm a crank and a contrarian. "Those who want to follow my argument should pull their tattered copies of Aristotle's Politics off their shelves and consult Bk. Ill, ch. 11. Those who would HI, i hi disagree might begin by tak- ing a look at Hobbes's Leviathan, chs. 8 (sec. 11), 15 (sec. 21), and 46 (sec. 11). [jFN I by Erin L. Greer RAMIKA RENEE GOURDINE '11 Sophomore Ramika Renee Gourdine considers herself an advocate for the power of the written word. As the Opinions Editor for The Stormy Petrel Gourdine revels in translating her ideas and designs to paper, knowing that, by expressing her opinions in visually appealing ways, she is encouraging discourse and influencing the marketplace of ideas. "I like that it's an outlet where other people can hear what I have to say," Gourdine ad- mits. "I am also very interested in design because the way that something looks is very influential on whether or not someone reads it and the meanings they get from it." Gourdine's interest in journalism began with her involvement in Print Journalism Magnet Program at Grady High School in Atlanta. Her activities and grades at Grady caught the attention of the Oglethorpe administration, which later awarded her the prestigious JEO Scholarship. Since then, Gourdine has been honing her OpEd chops- she won an award for Best Story for the Opinions section last year and making her mark as an active student on campus. In addition to her position at The Stormy Petrel, Gourdine serves as Awards Chair, Efficiency Chair and Triangle Chair for the ZIZ sorority, sings second soprano with the University Singers and also works as a tutor in the Writing Center. Off-campus, she coaches the Grady High School debate team and sings with Capital City Opera. Gourdine said the size and structure of Oglethorpe has allowed her to pursue her passion for expression an invaluable opportunity that she might not have had at another university. "At Oglethorpe, everyone knows everyone or everyone has at least seen everyone" Gourdine explains, "so when you have something to say, it's easy to connect a face with a message." Gourdine said she plans to continue voicing her opinion in her post graduate years not as a journalist, but as a Human Rights Lawyer. "Law has always been a goal for me," she says. "I argue. That's what I do." SARAH KENDALL GAULT '10 For Pre-Med junior Sarah Kendall Gault, a life's purpose is all about service which explains why, when she visited the campus for the first time and witnessed the See Saw for Cancer campaign, Gault knew she had found her collegiate home. Excited about the service opportunities at Oglethorpe, Gault left her hometown of Carrollton, KY, for Atlanta, and landed amid the loving arms OU's service fraternity AOQ. A member since fall of 2006, Gault, who previously held the position of VP of Service, is now President of the chapter. During her years of involvement, Gault and her fellow AOQ members have performed service projects with the Atlanta Community Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul, as well as hosting the annual Trick Or Treat in Traer. Last spring, Gault was the Team Captain for the AOQ Relay for Life team. "Being able to be so active in this organization is likely my favorite aspect of my experience here at Oglethorpe," Gault said. "It's a very rewarding activity. You can do a lot of things that make you feel 1 good about yourself, but doing something that helps other people takes that to a whole new level." MR In addition to her activism with the service fraternity, Gault is a member of the Pre-Med fraternity, Q>AE. Among her activities with , AOQ, OAK, AX and *FX. His multiple interests and involvements are opening many doors, and Moore said he is having a difficult time choosing which path to follow. He would like to pursue a higher degree in law and possibly psychology. For now though, Moore has decided to give professional acting a go and says he plans to go to California after graduation to see if he can 'make it' in the business. LUMNI ROFILE '80 CHRISTOPHER by Erin L. Greer Some voice their ideals on the Opinion/Editorials page of the newspaper and others offer their views around the office water cooler, but for Oglethorpe alumnus Christopher J. McFadden, '80, right and wrong aren't decided in OpEds or over paper cups they are puzzled out behind a bench. An appellate lawyer now for two decades, McFadden channeled his years of expertise into a bid for Judge for the Court of Appeals of Georgia this year. Although he did not win the seat, he did accomplish one of his major goals in pursuing the challenge: ensuring his voice is heard. "The decisions being made by the president and congress right now will have a substantial impact on everyone... Your own interests are on the line...the political process is ultimately where our freedoms rest." "Part of the reason I decided to become a candidate was because I wanted to participate in the debate about what a judicial campaign should be about," said McFadden, who emphasized that judges do not run under part}' affiliations, but on law experience. To avoid the appearance of partisan affiliation, McFadden declined inquiries by special interest groups who sent questionnaires to assess how he would vote on controversial is- sues. McFadden says his stance shows his desire to rule based on law and not on opinion. OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY "I bring a tangible record of contributions in standing up for the ideal of the rule of law," he explained. "The proposition, as John Adams put it, that we have a govern- ment 'of laws and not of men.'" Raised in Acron, Ohio, McFadden's father, Donald, was a judge. McFadden, who stud- ied philosophy at Oglethorpe and received his law degree from the University of Georgia, always felt his upbringing pointed him toward the bench. "The challenge drew me to law, and I sort of grew up with the expectation that I would go into law. My father was a judge ...and some of my friends at Oglethorpe assumed I was a pre-law major," McFadden laughed. "I have wanted to be a judge for a very long time, to a significant extent because of the example set by my father. And for someone with my gifts which are similar to his service as a judge is the most honorable vocation to which I can aspire." The co-author of two books, "Georgia Appellate Practice With Forms" the First and Second editions, McFadden credits his practice, headquartered in Decatur, Geor- gia, with providing him a new perspective on the law and how it applies to people's everyday lives. This perspective, he says, is a very personal way of affecting change in the world. "[It's about] seeing the impact on the people who come to you at crisis moments in their lives," McFadden explained. "I have represented people who are struggling against losing their children, losing their business or losing their freedom, and that kind of deep understanding of the human aspect of the court is very important." Among his many professional accolades, McFadden has served as an Atlanta Bar Association officer and is currently in line for that association's presidency. He also served as a Special Master for the Supreme Court of Georgia. Upon learning of his bid for office, former Oglethorpe President Manning Pattillo hosted a promotional event for McFadden last summer. When he isn't pouring over the aspects of a case, McFadden finds other ways to make himself heard in the community. A hus- band and father, McFadden plays Santa Claus at Egleston Children's Hospital, serves as a lector at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and has a black belt in Taekwondo. But if high kicks and Old Saint Nick aren't your forte, McFadden encourages every- one, regardless of beliefs, to get involved in the political process. "Politics really cuts to the heart of it. It's where decisions that effect our lives are made. The decisions being made by the president and congress right now will have a substantial impact on everyone... Your own interests are on the line. ..the political process is ultimately where our freedoms rest." With the election behind him, Mcfadden says he will return to the active practice of law. He said work has already picked back up, and he is looking forward to another political run, potentially in 2010. LUMNI HONORED HROUGH CEO UNIVERSITY '99 '99 MATTHEW ANDY -A I ; I OU alumni Andy Milford and Matthew White were featured in October in the Atlanta Business Chronicle's "CEO University" special section. The pair, graduates of the class of '99, credit the success of their business, Dorian Software Creations Inc., to the education they received from Oglethorpe University. "I see the value in a liberal arts education," White says in the article. "I learned how to think critically." Milford agreed. "There is an entrepreneurial atmosphere. The professors are focused on educating rather than on conducting research." Milford and White began their friendship as freshman year roommates. Milford created Dorian Software in 1997 and maintained the company on his own for two years, but, when the need for a partner arose in 1999, White was the natural choice. Today, Milford serves as CEO and chief software architect, and White is the COO and VP of sales and marketing for Dorian. In July 2008, Dorian Software announced its second quarter sales revenue was the highest in company history. LUMNI LERT ANITA STEVENSON PATTERSON 97 Greetings! Our nation is in a challenging time when we all want to be heard. Right now, everyone is focused on our country s credit crisis, the presidential elections and other issues. We have opinions, solutions and ideas, and we want to be heard. As an alumna of Oglethorpe, I encourage you to be heard. A liberal arts education based in the vivacious city of Atlanta pro- vided each of us with the opportunity to learn to think outside the box and discuss our opinions with others. We are thinkers, and we are doers. Once the economy stabilizes and our next president is in office and we can once again shift our focus to other things, I encourage you to step up and volunteer at Oglethorpe, attend alumni events or spend an evening calling other alumni to encourage them to support the OU Fund. The National Alumni Association is always seeking new volunteers - you just need to speak up and be heard! Be heard in positive ways that can make our university even stronger. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend Oglethorpe's Evening of Enchant- ment before the Boar's Head Ceremony on Saturday, December 6; come back to campus during Alumni Weekend April 17 -19, 2009. If it's your reunion year (if your class year ends in a 4 or a 9), you'll get the chance to climb the tower and ring the Carillon bells! That's a great way to be heard (all over Brookhaven!). Dr. Schall and the alumni office travel to various cities each year. That's a wonderful way for our alumni who are living around the country to reconnect and be heard. Just this fall, the visits included Charlotte, Raleigh, Jacksonville, Brunswick, Savan- nah and Washington, D.C. We'll be in your area this spring, Florida! Another way you can speak up and be heard is to nominate deserving alumni for the awards that are presented during each Alumni Weekend. There is a nomination form enclosed or you can nominate some- one online at www.alumni.oglethorpe. edu/alumniawardsform. Please think about fellow alumni you know who you would like OU to consider honoring with its prestigious awards and nominate them. Get involved and be heard, and you'll help add to the countless positive things going on at Oglethorpe University! After all, Oglethorpe's motto is "Make a life. Make a living. Make a difference." 20 I OGLETHORPE UNIVERSITY CLASS NOTES EDUCATION AND CAREERS Reverend John M.
