Two boats appear in the foreground and the Lakeside Boat Club boathouse stands in the background. Lake Olmstead was created during the expansion of the Augusta Canal in 1873, when engineer Charles A. Olmstead constructed a dam across Rae's Creek. By the turn of the twentieth century, Lake Olmstead had become a popular recreation area for Augustans. Large parks, such as Lake View Park, were equipped with boathouses that offered Augustans the opportunity to rent boats for fishing and recreational use.</dc:description><dc:description>Original postcard scanned and described by the Digital Library of Georgia as a part of Georgia HomePLACE: an initiative of the Georgia Public Library Service and GALILEO.</dc:description><dc:format>image/jpeg</dc:format><dc:language>eng</dc:language><dc:publisher>[S.l.] : Raphael Tuck &amp; Sons</dc:publisher><dc:relation>Forms part of: Picturing Augusta: historic postcards from the collection of the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library System System.</dc:relation><dc:relation>Augusta, Ga. ; no. 2092</dc:relation><dc:rights>http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/</dc:rights><dc:subject>Augusta (Ga.)--Social life and customs--20th century</dc:subject><dc:subject>Boathouses--Georgia--Augusta</dc:subject><dc:subject>Boats and boating--Georgia--Augusta</dc:subject><dc:subject>Canoes and canoeing--Georgia--Augusta</dc:subject><dc:subject>Boating for women--Georgia--Augusta</dc:subject><dc:title>Augusta, Ga. : Lake View Park</dc:title><dc:type>StillImage</dc:type></oai_dc:dc>
