Thousands of Trained Native Workers . . - Countless Natural Resources . . . Make This Section of the Country a Favored Center for Expanding Industrial Operations . . . The Entire Southeast is Best Served from Macon's Central Location. (Courtesy Macon Chamber of Commerce) Macon, a prosperous and growing city of more than 165,000 population in its Metropolitan Area, serves a Middle Georgia trade territory of more than half a million people. It is surrounded by one of the richest agricultural production areas in the South. .. . , The city's motto-"The Heart of Georgia"-comes from a gift of nature. The geographical center of the state is only six miles away. Since 1940, Macon's metropolitan population has increased some 50,000. Its bank deposits have jumped from below $20,000,000 to more than $85,000,000, and its retail sales have skyrocketed to $144,000,000 annually. Its wholesale and jobbing business exceeds $80,000,000 annually. Money turnover, as seen through its rising bank debits, has increased in volume more than three times. The U. S. Department of Commerce reports that Macon and surrounding territory have all the basic factors necessary to continued agricultural, industrial and business progress, and lists it among the first ten cities of the nation likely to hold wartime gains. Leader in Industry Industrially Macon is among the Southeastern leaders. The city being situated in the expansive cotton country " much textile industry centers here. The city is the hub of production in a territory which oper- ates more than 3,000,000 spindles and more than 55,000 looms, and which has a cotton apparel output of some $55,000,000 annually in manufacturers' volume. .. . Included in the inventory of textile products manufactured in this area are coarse yarns and fabrics, duck cloth for men's clothing, men's and boys' trousers, dress and sport shirts, underwear, work clothes and socks. This is among the nation's richest areas inpulpwood, and manufacturers of container board and struc- tural insulation recently reached consumption of more than 1,000 cords daily. , Other valuable resources in raw materials include large quantities of hardwood, and a majority ot the U. S. supply of Kaolin and fuller's earth. An aerial view of downtown Macon, one of the fastest-growing cities in the rapidly-developing Southeast. INTRODUCTION IX Industrial employment in Macon reached an all-time peace-time peak in 1956, doubling since 1940 and now totaling about 19,500 workers. New industries have increased the number in 1956 and the contemplated expansion of present industrial operations will carry the total still farther. Authorities believe that Macon's industrial development is just beginning. They see the Southeast as the nation's favored region for industrial expansion-and Macon is strategically located in the center of this great area. * Rich in Agriculture America's most famous peach-growing country surrounds Macon. Within a radius of 75 miles, millions of peach-trees are cultivated, and each year are shorn of more than 5,000,000 bushels of luscious Georgia peaches. Macon is the industry's established marketing center. The fertile acres which have made middle Georgia famous for peaches, also produce the nation's richest harvests in pecans, peanuts, watermelons and many varieties of vegetables. The commercial food-freezing industry is one of the city's fastest-growing industrial enterprises. Headquarters of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, with a membership of 50,000 Georgia farm families, is located here. Production of Hereford, Black Angus and Guernsey cattle is increasing so rapidly in this section that the cattle industry is ratedas one of the leading agricultural pursuits. Entries in Chamberof Commercesponsored fat cattle shows, and salesfor this agricultural area covering some 15 counties, have increased more than ten times in ten years. Many names are remotely connected with the history of Macon, but Benjamin Hawkins, who came a century after Col. Moore, forever will have his name on the city's roll of honor. It was he who came in 1804 and effected the first treaty with the aboriginal settlers. They ceded to the U. S. Government all their lands between the Ocmulgee and Oconee rivers "except 100 acres" --100 acres which encompass the spot on which old Fort Hawkins now stands, with the Ocmulgee National Monument not far away. The 100 acres were reserved by the Indians, they said, as a trading ground on which to meet their "white friends." Fort Hawkins was built on the site by special arrangement, and it was here, on Oct. 8, 1813, that the first white child was born in this section. She was the daughter of Capt. Phil Cook, commander of the Fort, and later became Mrs. Isaac Winship. A reproduction of the old fort still stands as a symbol of the foresight, courage and determination of a people who have piloted Macon through more than a century of consistent growth and progress, and members of the Winship family still are prominent, not only in Macon, but their names have made history in national and international affairs. These central Georgia plains were just as important as a "key site" inpre-historic days as they are today. Natural resources drew the Red Man into this territory, and it was to his advantage to make the east side of the Ocmulgee his trading ground. The natural resources of this section of the state continue to draw business and industry to Macon, and the fertile surrounding lands have developed the whole of Middle Georgia into some of the richest agricultural areas in the entire southeast. Maps of the early white traders show the trails that converged and branched here. DeSoto followed these trails and pitched his camp in this area for a short time as early as 1540. Legend has it that the first Christian baptism occured here when a priest in DeSoto's party baptized an Indian servant-guide. INTRODUCTION xm Mercer University, looking across Tatnall Square Park, one of Macon's largest public parks and playgrounds. Lanier High School for Boys, one of the city's five high schools. XIV INTRODUCTION Important Military Factor An important factor in war as in peace, Macon's contribution to the nation's success has been outstandingly significant in all wars of the last century. Macon's military organizations were among the first to answer calls to service in the War Between the States, Spanish-American War, Mexican War, and in both World Wars. Recognized as a superb training ground for soldiers, Macon's Camp Wheeler, a major installation during both World Wars, has sent upward of 300,000 thoroughly-preparedG. I.'s to the battlefronts of the world. Millions of rounds of ammunition were made for World War n in Macon's U. S. Naval Ordnance Plant. Aviators by the thousands--both American and British--were trained at Cochran Field and sent into service of out country and that of our allies. The nation's most powerful air armada, comprised of the world's greatest fighting planes, came to Macon for repairs and rebuilding at the Warner Robins Air Material Area. Both the U. S. Naval Ordnance Plant and the Warner Robins Material Area are permanent military installations. A new installation, the .Byron Naval Supply Depot, is now under construction near Macon. Macon is rich in history connected with the War Between the States. The birthplace of Sidney Lanier, stands as a memorial to the courage of Macon's citizens during those dark days in the history of the country and many of the stately Colonial mansions bear evidence of the city's participation as a battleground in that historic struggle. Just as Macon contributed to the defense of America in World Warn by loading fuses, training soldiers and aviators and repairing airplanes by the thousands, its role in the War Between the States was comparatively significant. The Confederate Government located an arsenal here, and more than 350 men worked constantly in the manufacture of shot, shells, sabers and harness. The Confederate Government also established a depository here, and at one time as much as $1,500,000 in gold was under its protection. During Sherman's march to the sea through Milledgeville, the State Capital was moved to Macon temporarily. People of this city witnessed the end of the war when President Jefferson Davis passed through as a prisoner-of-war following his capture in southern Georgia. After two years imprisonment, Davis returned to Macon and received an enthusiastic ovation. Washington Memorial is one of Macon's public libraries. It has a circulation of some 300,000 books annually, and its service reaches far beyond that of the many school and college libraries in the city. CITY DIRECTORY IT COSTS YOU MONEY--Every Time it Is Loaned The practice of lending your City Directory, in a great measure, is responsible for the increasing cost of Directory Service. The reason is:-- There is a definite cost involved in the making of the DIRECTORY of Your City. THIS COST MUST BE ABSORBED BY THE SUBSCRIBERS--BE THEY ONE-OR BE THEY 1000. If there were but ONE SUBSCRIBER to the CITY DIRECTORY--THE ONE SUBSCRIBER would of necessity have to absorb THE WHOLE COST. If there were 100 SUBSCRIBERS--each one would have to absorb 1/100th PART OF THE WHOLE COST. If there were 1000 SUBSCRIBERS--each one would have to absorb 1/1000th PART OF THE WHOLE COST. From which it is obvious that the GREATER the number of subscribers --the LESSER the cost to each. And It is also obvious that the LESSER the number of subscribers--the GREATER the cost to each. Every lime you loan your City Directory the LESS NECESSITY THERE IS FOR THE BORROWER TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE SERVI.CE. MORE BORROWERS result in FEWER SUBSCRIBERS which means INCREASED COST.
